Car Dash Cam Recommendation

So Im looking at getting 2x dash cams, preferably <$100 (more like near the $50 mark) with decent quality however.
I've picked a couple and need suggestions on which one would be the best in terms of quality of video recording and product quality, or suggest other alternatives.

  1. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dash-Camera-Dashcam-Full-HD-1080P… (is this one capacity battery?)
  2. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-Bezel-Blueskysea-2-7-G1W-B-…
  3. http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_67201.html (not sure if Gearbest can be trusted)
  4. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Full-HD-1080P-G1W-2-7-Car-Dash-DV…

Thanks in advanced.

  • Get number 2 or 4. I bought one with gearbest, not the best purchase experience.

    My experience with Gearbest.

    • Bought a dashcam
    • Waited for 6 - 11 weeks.
    • Dashcam arrived DOA.
    • Complained via paypal and they wanted more money for a new dashcam to be sent.
    • Complained via ozbargain and their Rep fixed the issue.
    • New dash cam arrived 4 weeks later and it still works.

Not saying all gearbest experience is like this but if I was to buy again, I would pay extra for something locally on ebay. At least i dont have to put up with gearbest bs.

    • Hmm jut realised that #2 and #4 is basically the same, except #4 has a black ring instead of silver. Does the silver make a huge difference in terms of noticeability? Also is the size too big?
Is it worth getting the G1WH instead?

    • same happens to me.

  • I got number 2 about 3 months ago. Its a great cam however none of the buttons work anymore unless I remove the SD card. More of an annoyance than anything and lots of people recommend this camera so maybe I am just unlucky.

    • just try to help troubleshooting

none of the buttons work anyone

      what do you mean?
      - is the screen on?
      - is the red dot on the screen ie recording?
      - is a key flashing on screen?

      • Yes to all of the above.

I wondered about the key flashing, is it some sort of screen lock?

        • My guess is that auto locking when video recording as motion detection is on. by taking the card out, you interrupt the recording so the button then works. I think I hold on to the right top button to change mode to camera or playback then will work also. Because mine is a capcitpr model - supposed to be better to avoid explosion of battery under heat - it is annoying not able to playback without connect to power. When connecting, it keeps recording.

No expert myself and would be happy if anyone can enlighten.

  • No4 …estore has a good reputation.

  • I've got one of these and are excellent picture quality for the price.

  • I have 4. And it's been working great for the past 13ish months.

  • +1

apart from G1W-B/C, are there any other alternatives worthing consideration?

my experience with gearbest is even worse than tomleonhart.

  • What about above $100 marks.

    • Navman MiVue 530 $121 at Harvey Norman. Great camera for the price.

good luck with gearbest getting something delivered and or working.

i purchased one of these a year ago and it hasn't skipped a beat.

showed my boss he got one also, and then purchased 10 more to go in the work car fleet

    • Wow that's really cheap, how's the quality? Can you read the number plates and.How is the video at night?

      • yeah you can make out number plates, the night vision is well as what you'd expect

    • Does this one need constant power or does it have a battery?

      • it has a built in battery, i generally leave it plugged in. you can set how long you want it left recording for after power is disconnected also.

        hope this helps

        • Yeah, thanks mate.

  • Bit out of the price range here…but I have the Blacksys CL100. I like having both front and rear video recording. It also saves "event" video separately so that it doesn't get overwritten…though I seem to notice it considers going over speed bumps as events, so plenty of non-interesting backstreet videos. It also has an emergency button that is supposed to capture 30 seconds of video away into separate storage (10 seconds of video prior to pressing the button and 20 after) so you can store video away when someone does something spectacular in front (or behind) you and you think it will get mega-hits on youtube later ;)

  • I have the G1W-C, bought ages ago from gearbest but only have been using for a couple weeks. Picture is good and works well, simple to set up and use, cheap.

If I was buying one now though I'd go for this one which you haven't mentioned https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/224127 Higher resolution, better picture and colours and 1080p 60 fps as an option

  • Hmm.. slightly off-topic - I understand why a dashcam is a great idea. But why is a rear one also good? Isn't it the case that anyone who hits you from behind is at fault anyway, so it wouldn't matter? Or what am I missing?

    Thank you. :)

    • Just a hypothetical here - and I dont really know the answer either. What if the back driver asserts that both were stopped, the front driver went into reverse and reversed into the back car (say when overshooting a bit at the stopped lights)?

If both parties do not have dashcam, will the front driver's story be believed by default? If not, perhaps the dashcam will help. If yes, the rear dashcam is irrelevant, as you say.

  • I looked around shops and the internet for a good dashcam for about 6 weeks and finally settled on a ac-vtec camera www.acvtec.com.au it's about $100 but well worth the money. I've had it in my car for about 9 months and it hasn't missed a beat. Comes with a rear camera which is easy to install. This seller is also on ebay with Aussie stock.

    • Just to confirm, the $140 item? I only see 2 items, $140 & $180. How is compared to any others you have seen in cars? Are there especialy good or bad points with this brand, and how much memory did you choose? Was this enough? Cheers.

    • Just looked at the site - how long is the rear camera cable?

      • +1

Komorebi, to answer your question…Rear camera cable is approx 5 metres long. I have a Toyota Corolla hatch and there was cable to spare.

  • The G1W seems to get good reviews on most test sites. I ended up buying a A118-C from spytec similar chipset to the G1W. The night quality is not the best but you can capture number plates if the car gets close. I have only had it for a month, so far so good.

  • @Ughhh how about this one?
