Free Uncapped Telstra Air Wi-Fi until Sep 2016 (Telstra Customers)

2360

Just read that Telstra are giving unlimited data to their Air wifi until June 30 Sep 30 2016 for Telstra customers!!

Awesome!!!!

From News.com.au article:

Telstra launched the Telstra Air Network in June but there were several catches to using it. You had to be a Telstra broadband customers, you could only log on for 30 minutes at a time and the data you used was counted against your home data limit.

From today, when Telstra customers log on to the network, they will not have any data caps or time limitations and any data they use will not affect their other accounts.

For non Telstra customers, see realfancyman's forum post on how to obtain the deal via a $2 sim card.

Update 21/4: Deal has been extended from June 30 2016 to Sep 30 2016 (thanks creeps_bay).

    • It is pretty simple, follow the Orange and red colour coding on the Telstra entry point site. Mobile customers can be a guest, home broadband customers can be an Air member. For the former you need mobile service associated to your Telstra ID.

      • What advantages in being an Air member over just using a prepaid ID?

        • +1

An air member would continue to have access to Air at no ongoing cost after June.

          Prepaid ID: Oz hotspots only.
Air member: Oz hotspots, other Air members routers, OS hotspots

    • Just need a Telstra PrePaid SIM. Don't need to recharge it either. Forum thread about it here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/225574

  • It's a bit slow.
Not much use for watching popcorn time

  • Is this only good if you are outside and near a payphone?

    • or live in an apartment accross from one but yeah, overall pretty location-limited

Only in Australia or does it work for the overseas option too?

    • -1

      Oh yes indeedy,
it is Telstra so it is being available in every willage on the subcontinent.
      (wobble wobble)

Works for overseas but only if you are a home broadband customer, mobile customers only get access to the Australian hotspots.

  • Clicked the activate Telstra Air in my account yesterday and still not actually activated yet. In fact it seems to have cancelled the activation.

  • Damn it. It asks me to log in every day. Pain.
Auto-connect option doesn't seem to do anything.

  • Do you need to signup separately for FON, and fixed Wifi Hotspot use?

I activated Air Free Wi-Fi for the fixed hotspots under my 3G account, do I also need to signup for a FON account , or can I just cruise by and log in to the FON network?

  • This is awesome news for Telstra prepaid mobile/broadband customers.

Will actually give this a try when i'm out and about.

Does this interfere with google play billing?

    • Yes, I regret doing this at all

what is that you two are talking about? please share for others benefit… thanks

  • Nice freebie but yeah… I'm shortly to approach live 24x7 & deactive services a carrier will count as active for H1-/shareholders. While there, I wonder should I get the WiFi thing deregistered get GP/BPond activated instead - that should enable freedom+ to spend up this $300 top-up credit sitting around ??
Merely uninstalling Air seems like it would be too straightforward simple a thing to get Play store liberated, while the 300 remains a discretely fixed top up balance. hmm

  • Signed up recently and gave it a go.

I'm getting a sustained 600KB/s on Steam at one of my local Telstra payphones.

That was with a 130 mbps wifi connection.

Anyone know if they use 5GHz or only 2.4?

    5MBps down, 0.9 Mbps up.

…. the signal from most of these "air" locations are soo weak you literally need to sit within a few metres…

so now Telstra is rewarding drug dealers (who are the only ones I see hanging around phone boxes) with free wi-fi !!

      • Maybe because a good number are in residential premises, so the modem isn't located near the street, hence poor reception in public spaces. I have no trouble connecting to the hotspots they have in the phone boxes, but the lease times are ridiculously short.

Indeed, good luck trying to connect. After registration and even with using the Telstra air app, most of the time it won't even let me connect. Back to Vodafone soon after trying this month of a rather lacklustre Telstra experience.

I expected fireworks and streamers coming to this 'best better betterest' network. Ha

      I only get a pahh!

        why not aldi's new offer?

    • Anyone know what upload speeds are, is it worth using these to upload to my cloud, or is my adsl2 going to be faster?

    • Initially I thought this was fantastic, but after I while I started getting really sick of it. Because these things are pretty much everywhere (at least where I go) but have shitty signal, it would always hijack my connection and sit there waiting for login. Meanwhile, I'm not getting any messages or anything because I no longer have an internet connection.

I thought those "wifi assist" type features would be the answer, but they just end up making me chew through more data when the mobile signal is stronger than wifi.

      Can't win either way :-(

  • My inlaws are a street behind the main street in a small town and they get a really good signal from the one in the main street. Runs YouTube smoothly for the kids, so it keeps them, and us happy and saves the inlaw's data.

If only they could make it just auto correct instead of having to sign in with the app
