Question RE: Flight Prices to USA (West Coast)

I was looking at flight prices to the west coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco) in the past few days, and before today they were quite cheap, around the $900-$1000 mark, for quality airlines, like United Airlines, Air NZ, and Qantas. However, today they've gone (back) up to around $1800 (Qantas, Air NZ, United).

I know Air NZ had a sale up until yesterday night, however, I am unaware of any sale by United and Qantas. Were they just simply price-matching Air NZ? Or did they have sales going on as well?

Also, does anyone know if the prices will go down again in the near future - for travel in February 2016?

Thanks a lot, guys!

Over the fast few weeks I have been watching these closely & bought syd>lax return qf direct for $1050. (had to buy expedia.com , not available in au)

A week or so earlier there was also qf syd>sfo for <$1k.

United were always cheapest tho. Iberia had the odd very cheap flight (+ sas, delta) perhaps try the airline(s) directly.

Are you using hipmunk/momondo? I found these had the best prices but iwtf, google flights, itamatrix, skyscanner, kayak, vayama all useful & worth checking (i am sure there are more)

    • Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I used Momondo! Although I would usually confirm with the airline's own page. Thanks for the advice!

Was this for travel in December/January ?

Airfares always go up around Christmas and also school holiday time.

    Supply and demand.

Back in 2008 I paid $2400 economy return to LA via Qantas (travel in September School Holidays)

Last month (travel in November 2015) paid $1030 economy return to LA with Virgin Aust.

    • (Bit late here, but…) No, this was for late Jan - early Feb.
