[PS3, PS4, XB360, XB1] PLEX Client - Now FREE for Xbox 360, One, PS3 & PS4

2500

WOW! Was part of the paid subscription for gaming platforms but now the apps are free apparently.

Many of you wont need that second or third Chromecast now

For those that dont know PLEX can stream your stored media over wifi - its really easy to set up and works flawlessy with all media files (even windows media centre / .wtv) - its like your own personal Netflix with all the media you have on your PC hard drive

It looks really pretty to boot with cover and background art, summaries, synopsis etc of all your movies and TV shows

Enjoy

EDIT: theres a bit of misinformation in some posts below - both the PC server and all apps for the consoles are FREE - if you have your credit card out YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!

      • Well… So it is.

        XBone app to be free
I signed up begrudgingly for 5 USD a month only 2 months ago hoping the free version would release before I had spent more than the next level of subscription

        • +2

Cancel immediately and spend next months $5 on your favorite beer and raise a toast to this post, even if you are by yourself sitting on the kerb outside of the bottle shop

        • @pointless comment: cancelled within 1 minute of reading Op ;)

  • It was announced 2 days ago in the Newsletter. Here's the text under the heading "Xbox One One and Playstation apps are now FREE for everyone!":

Xbox One and PlayStation users, have we got a great gift for you! Plex apps for your favorite game consoles—all of them—have graduated from their preview periods and are now free for everyone! Joining Xbox 360, as well as our other big screen apps, these newly free ones give users all the basic functionality at no cost. For those of you with a Plex Pass, our premium features, like Parental Controls, Vevo music videos, and Trailers & Extras, look awesome on the big screen.

  • I use videostream right now… This can stream to my chromecast (old plasma tv)?

  • So if I was already a plex free user, my interpretation of the comments trail is that my account will now be able to stream from my Server to xbox/ps without me having to do anything?

If this is the case, why are Plex still asking for payment if you sign up for a Plex Pass subscription? Im a little confused.

    • Just download the relevant app for your xbox/ps.

Its only asking you pay in case u want to - ignore it

  • Has anyone used both Plex and Universal Media Server on PS4? Which is better?

I suppose if it's free now I'll give it a try anyway.

    • Plex is way better. Plex can do what Media Server does plus better user interface and subtitle.

      • hmmm.. the browser based business seems pretty lame compared to Universal Media Server.

I guess I'll give it more of a chance later when I have the time.

Always frustrating going to the effort of installing the app on the PS, then shortly after opening, you're prompted with the message that it is only available to Plex Pass members.

    • -1

hmmmm….i have to ask, why would you repeatedly try when you already know the end result is the said frustration?

      • -1

Hmmmmmm…. To see if it is available yet.

        • Hmmmm…. So you spent the time to install, enter details, experience the said frustration, then delete the app several times?

Why would you not just spend 10 or so seconds to check the plex website?

          Hmmmm….

        • @pointless comment: Nah. Usually check after a long time.

        • -1

@TheOneWhoKnocks: oh good, id hate to think you are wasting your time and repeatedly experiencing the said frustration in a recurrant short to medium time frame.

Should have been free from the beginning. I've been using plex on my htpc (and chromecast) for years.

I don't understand why these guys have previously insisted on making client-side console software subscription dependent.

If anyone is still wondering what the hype is all about, Plex automatically organizes your media AND is capable of transcoding. Transcoding is essential because most consoles and embedded devices (e.g. Chromecast) have severely gimped codec support. Plex solves all the format troubles.

  • Just finished testing on ps3 and ps4 1080p video lags a lot not playable. You are better off with the poem home theatre app on an old pc or a tablet

    • I think it depends how they're connected. PS3 runs my 1080p videos fine because my PC and PS3 are both connected with Ethernet. However my Chromecast and iPhone lag over WiFi.

    • If you don't want to upgrade your home network or server then you could try to output at a lower quality to decrease file size.

      • I got a pretty powerful router. I think it's ps4

1080p will lag over wifi but is fine over ethernet.
I dont really care tho at 720p and even 480p is fine for me

Plex is my favourite app of all time, still going to use the plex pass as i use the camera sync but for anyone who hasn't used it yet…get on board!

This guy makes the most sense I've heard all day - if you care about the best quality picture youd be watching on bluray, not streaming from the other end of the house

  • Links on get it on PS3?

    • -1

If you cant work the first, easiest step out for yourself, plex is not for you…and the rest of the setup is also pretty easy

      • Your comment is the same as your username. I'm a Plex user and never had it on PS3, I'm not sure what you talking about?

In fact I own Andoird/iOS and QNAP versions

        • +1

You just go to ps3 app store, i dont get how u dont know that, its pretty obvious sorry to say

    • +1

u need to get it off the PSN store.
u also need to dl the media server onto ur PC/ server

  • Finally!

  • +1

The interface is choppy on the ps4. Makes no sense.

    • -1

Maybe im missing the point but without context, your post makes no sense

      • Perhaps muzzakus is on a boat? 🚤
        Or a chopper. 🚁

I've had neverending troubles with my WDTV Live so I'm glad this is free now because I moved from using my ps3 for TV and movies because cinavia was screwing me over but hopefully plex won't have that same problems. Thanks for the post.

    • ^This! Man I'm hopeful this solves our problems…

    • Won't bypass cinavia protection as it's embedded in the audio stream regardless if it's transcoded or not.

      • Bummer! That blows. I guess I'll have to get a Roku or something then.

  • I agree that this is a bargain because it is now free.. but there is no need to pay for Plex now that they have brought a media player to PS4. Iv been browsing my Plex media server ever since they released the media player. Is there additional benefits I'm missing out on by just using the free media player?

  • Ok, I'm confused and maybe someone can help. I have had plex setup for quite a while, with server being able to stream to TV's, Smsung Bluray player, PS# etc. But to do this I had to purchase Plex pass and pay a monthly subscription.

Does this now men I can cancel Plexpass? Or do I need to resubscribe with a new plex pass, or do I just cancel the direct debit monthly payment only?

  • If it is all free how does Plex makes money?

  • Anyone using Kodi as a client to a Plex server? I run Kodi but wouldn't mind having more clients talk to the same DB.

    • I did it on accident once, and it seemed to be working fine although everything appeared unsorted and clunky on Kodi.

  • Nice, now I can get rid of the Chromecast in my room meaning one less power socket used =)

  • This has been Awesome thanks OP - Been using it heaps since it was posted :D

  • Sorry, a noob question. I have a laptop, desktop, NAS, chromecast, media player and of course a TV and phone. Would I be able take advantage of using Plex? I know I can run it from my pc but I want to operate it from android phone. Do I have to pay for the premium version to use Plex from my phone?

  • Question - I can see that when I use the PS4 app, all works fine and as intended, however - when I want to stream from my laptop onto one of my Android devices, it asks me to "Activate Plex"
    https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/203868088-Unlockin…

To activate there is a $6.09 one-time cost - other than purchasing a Plex Pass, is there any way around this?

  • Also free on Samsung Smart TV

  • Plex is a terrific piece of software. I was ecstatic when they released the free version for Xbox. Prior to that, I had already paid for the iOS and android versions.
