  • Great price OP. I'd be on this in a flash if I hadn't just bought the Fidelio's last week. Good alternative for those who missed out on that deal.

  • +1

I had to butcher the headband of my k701's to fit on my head
.. if you have a large head caveat emptor

  • Can my keces 151 dac and objective 2 amp power this well?

    • I'd expect that amp would be fine.

    • The Objective 2 is quite a powerful amp and should not have any problem with them.

  • So, in conclusion, this is not good for big head, and also this need amplifier if played from mobile phone?

    • They're hard to drive, I wouldn't use them directly from a phone or portable mp3 player.

  • Just adding my experience with the K701 which are I believe very similar to the Q701. I was massively disappointed with these until I got an outboard DAC/AMP - just a cheapie FIIO unit with bass boost. After enabling bass boost I really started to enjoy them. Without bass boost, the K701's are for purists … people who don't want any kind of additional bass. Not sure if they fixed that with the Q701. But definitely don't try to drive these from a mobile phone without an amp. You can of course get portable amps if you can be bothered. But you'd probably be better off with something easy to drive like Koss KSC 75's.
Oh that's one other thing -the AKGs leak as badly as the Koss KSC 75's - if you're thinking about using these at work, or on public transport, you'll rapidly find yourself the most unpopular person in the area as everyone will be listening to a tinny version of what you're listening to.

    • I drive mine from an Asus Xonar Essence soundcard. It has an onboard DAC and amp that does a very good job. Very affordable alternative to buying separate amps and DACs.

      • I think he's talking about using them mobile, not at a PC.

        • I know this, these are headphones that need extra power. I was just stating a good way to use them that produces good sound at a low price. No one would/should wear these connected to a mobile.

    • Also keep in mind that these things look ridiculous on your head (unless you're Quincy Jones and even then, he's only just pulling them off). Definitely not recommended for outside the house use.

    • Sound leaking and sound coming in is the typical open headphone design thing. 3m and 6m probably reflect that (outdoor ones usually have 1.5m cables because anything beyond that becomes annoying to use outside).

Secondly, using open headphones outside tend to reduce the bass you could hear. Most of the noises from outside are from lower frequency range, which overshadows the bass (hence why many outdoor headphones tend to be closed (which helps, do not completely negate the effects) and tend to have boosted bass). I know that this has slightly different market audience, but if you compare Sennheiser's outdoor line (Momentum) against their indoor ones (i.e. HD600), you'd see what I mean.

Basically, these ones are for people who want to enjoy their music collection at home or in a quiet place.

Also, I find it slightly ironic that you mention KSC 75, I believe it has similar impedance level (not sure about sensitivity, I found figure of 101db SPL/V, which looked slightly sus). KSC-75 is not a easy headphone to drive, despite what it looks like on the outside.

I am mentioning this because I personally think many many people are better off without amp or at least, emphasis on amps are too much (shifting the budget onto headphone is usually better in many cases). I personally believe an amp should just amplify signals (this is my personal preference). In that case, the only case in where the amp should positively affect how a headphone sounds is when headphone requires driving power (or your source is just beyond awful i.e. white noises, though smartphones nowadays, at least flagships, are decent enough). I've heard extreme cases where the bass gets affected severely. That said, in many cases, it's merely how people like louder sound (which can be a valid reason to buy an amp) more, which can be achieved by turning the volume up in many cases.

There are amps that alters how things sound (tube amps are considered to do this) and many people prefer those as well. That said, I don't think that constitute as a requirement.

All that said, I personally think listening to music is a very personal hobby (i.e. as long as you enjoy it and are satisfied with how much you did to get it, it's all good). I am simply putting forward my opinion.

  • The price has never been better in terms of USD. The AUD is really low now.

    • +1

Be fair, I used Amazon Currency Exchange instead of XE.com rate, Amazon Currency Exchange usually is worse than other means of conversion.

That said, even counting that AUD is in a horrible horrible shape right now. I think it's in its way to recovery though.

      • I really hope you're right. Haven't shopped overseas for quite a long time…

        • It's at least not falling further than now. Also, comparing it to the times when we had parity is slightly unfair, Australian economy was in boom at that time, a huge boom that I have strong doubts that Australia will ever see again.

        • @Oversimplified: I agree.
