Moved to Forum: Original Link

Email says "Beat the rush - online now" but the price on the website is still $179.

I believe this is the 2015 model (3rd generation) - has been popular here on OzBargain for $150+ during eBay 20% off sales etc, so $99 is a steal.

There's also free shipping for orders over $99 so would be good once the price drops (to $99)

I am getting one. Anyone who buys many to turn a profit, may you get a particularly sore throat

    • You'll love it! Great little device

    • +5

I'm going to buy many and also buy some strepsils

  • Front page is has it as $165 on mobile. I'm thinking they messed up, but fingers crossed.

    • They always mess up. The deal is supposed to be live now, but it is not. These people won't be happy https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/225733

      • That deal scored 92+ for $146.
This one's going to go through the roof.

      • Not so much not being live, but pricing wise. The $165 wasn't even live when I had checked either.

      • Yep. Paid $179 a couple of weeks ago as a Chrissy present. I think my Mastercard has some kind of 'if you see it cheaper within 30 days we'll refund the difference' thing on it so might still work out for me.

        • If it is indeed $99 and not a pricing error I'm trying the same thing. Do we need a screenshot or what exactly are they after?

        • @cnut:
this came through in a to email me check yours

        • @TALLBALLER: Yeah I saw the subsequent email. I think I mentioned in another post yesterday that it was most likely an error to do with the Kindle Touch. Turns out the Touch is $99, so someone probably just mixed the two up.

        • @cnut: they did correct it hours later

    • Same issue with this TV deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/227107

Both are advertised offers, supposed to be starting at 4pm but not updated yet.

  • Was just looking for this :)

  • Still waiting for the website to be updated! Hoping this isn't a mistake…

  • Yeh is $165 now on the site

    • Ouch.

    • +3

Damn that's disappointing. Wanted one only today, and thought I had struck it lucky for a change. But I got dicked!

  • +1

If this is real, I will get one!

  • 179$ here

    • Where? :D

      • +2

        On ma browser

  • The attached picture had Mates Rates in the header.

  • I'm waiting for the price drop to take effect on the phillips sound bar that is on the front page too. I was about to buy it at $98.50 plus postage. It's now $79 with free postage since I'm buying a couple of other things to get me over $99. Well it will be once the site updates.

    • Sweet. The price finally updated for me. Bought with a gift card with 10% extra value from Woolies that was bought with an egift card from Groupon for 10% off.

  • can someone fill me in on the benefit of a kindle if you already have a tablet (or a big phone)?

    • +2

Apparently the ePaper displays are easier on the eyes (less eyestrain) than backlit LCD screens.

Battery lasts about a month on standby… and about a week straight of actual reading/changing pages so you dont need to charge them often.

They weigh less than LCD tablets.

    • +1

Much better battery life, much better for your eyes, lighter and more portable, excellent backlight and readability outdoors.

I have a number of different sized tablets and a Kindle Paperwhite, nothing comes close to the comfort of reading on the Kindle. My best tech purchase of 2014.

      • +1

Same experience here, big fan of the kindle

        • +1

          interesting! thanks.

hm i don't neeeed one, but since y'all think it's a steal, might just have to grab one.

  • I have the 2014 version, bought from Dick Smith for $129 and they sent me the 3G version by accident!

I've heard the backlight is really good on this version, don't use the 3G much so will spend the next day thinking hard to get this one!

    • The two are very similar, I have the 2014 version but can't see much point in upgrading even at this price. There are comparison videos on YouTube

  • Very good price. I paid $200 on ebay. Haven't even used it yet.

  • So was that a pricing error (someone screwed up with the Touch?) or is the price not updated yet? $99 seems like an error.

    • Never know with Dick. Wasn't long ago they had a price error on the Sony M5

      • I thought the code error for $146 was good. But this. This is a whole different dick. I mean deal.

    • In 2 days time, from 26th.

      • Alas, it looks like it was a pricing error. They sent a subsequent email to fix it up.

        • That sucks! I've slightly an older model (the previous generation) and would have bought this new model for $99. Well, another day and another Dick trick.

        • @AussieDaddy: I bought it when it was $146 or something from the previous deal and it's awesome. Is yours the paperwhite too? If so, the upgrade isn't worth the price in my opinion. But if you don't have a back-light, it might be worth looking at an upgrade.

        • @cnut: Yeah, it's the paperwhite (6" one I think. I can't even remember its actual name lol) and it's a back-light model as well. When I saw '$99' my OB senses started tingling but now that I've read your point I might keep my current one for another year and get whatever model they'll make mid-to-late next year (probably one of the color ones, like Fire or whatever they call them).

  • Dreaming.

  • People who are asking about the price, it says on top that the deal will start from the 26th so that's probably why it isn't showing $99 yet.

    • +5

I don't know how to bold so I'll caps instead…

IT SAYS ONLINE NOW SO WHO CARES WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT 26TH

      • You win, my caps friend. ;)

PS: I thought the 'now' referred to being able to buy this deal online rather than in-store, and not necessarily right at this moment. But I might have misunderstood.

  • The website has reverted back to the advertising it had before the boxing day sales where shown. Looks like it went live early.

Edit: I'd doubt it's a price error when they've made a banner for it!

  • Bookmarked. Now waiting

  • I was just looking to buy this! Does anyone know if I will be able to pricematch at Officeworks? Reason is I have Myer-coles gift card to use.

    • As long as it's not marked as a clearance item, should be.

  • If I add to cart now, will the price in cart update on 26th?

  • i want one but only for $99. When will it be this price?

    • Have you used one before!?

    • +1

      Mate go away

    • print snobs… ughh

    • The hell are you talking about?

300dpi is standard in the print industry, and can drop to 150dpi for large format posters.

  • +2

Mate works for DS and told me This will go live before Boxing Day, just getting all stock ready for online so delayed. Probably not tonight though

    • Thanks mate, I will keep an eye on it.

      • No problem, I've been happy with a kindle I bought a number of years ago, but at this price too good not to upgrade!

        • +1

You might want to revoke that neg then

    • Thanks for the update. Why the neg vote?

    • Time for your mate to start putting stock back into storage. Won't be many sales at this price.

  • 179-> 165

Currently at 165. At this rate it will be $99 6am 25th dec.

  • Does Dick Smith use Australia Post or Star Track for delivery?

    • Same thing, Star Track is owned by Auspost.

      • But they are separate services.

    • +3

Last time I bought from them, they use Toll

      • +2

        They use Toll

        • And what a fine job they do. They picked up my order from the Bunbury store today, and rather than dropping it off at my house which is 5 minutes away, or even bringing it to the local Toll depot which is 15 minutes away, they took it to Perth, which is 2 hour away.

I would have happily done click and collect, but it wasn't an option. Lucky delivery was free.

        • @puffinfresh:
          That is extremely inefficient.
They will have to drive +2.5hrs to redeliver it???

        • @mmd: Yep. Delivery hasn't been attempted yet. It'll make the 2 hour trip down to the local depot, then will likely be delivered tomorrow… when ironically, I'll be in Perth.

        • @puffinfresh: Well I'm impressed. I put a complaint in online late yesterday and they called me today to explain. They don't have a depot in Bunbury (Toll IPEC do, but not Toll Priority - they are different divisions). They can arrange delivery first thing tomorrow, but since I'm heading up to Perth today, they are going to arrange for it to be available for pick up from the Perth depot this afternoon.

Good thing too, because it delivery was attempted tomorrow, it would have made it's way back to Perth, and I wouldn't be able to collect it until Jan 15.

I'm not sure why the divisions don't share depots, or why the driver didn't just swing around and delivery it, but I guess it's all internal bureaucracy, rather than what makes sense.

I just got an email from dse

"Woops! Let's try that again - Beat the Boxing Day Mayhem! Here's How…"

Which lists the paperwhite as $165 - looks like it was a pricing error…

  • +5

    Dick's cocked it up again

    • +1

Dicky still owes me money from click and collects that were never in stock :(

Just be aware ozbeeps - They may take your money and not have stock, and you won't hear back from them via e-mail or contact forms. PayPal probably the way to go.

      • Happened to me too but they refunded the money within a week. A few days on their end then a few days to hit the credit card.

  • Pricing error…
Oh dick…. You've done it again

    • +1

Looks like Dick's graphics department have fat fingers…. :(

  • +2

It's not a bargain for $165. Please delete the post.

  • Not a pricing error, of item is listed on ozbargain its too cheap. The private investors who run DSE use this website tlcause they are tight arses.

    • +2

Let's try that again.. This time with more English :)

      • Now you've locked me out of editing my mobile phone comment :(

  • +1

I thought there was going to be an actual deal on boxing day for once. Disappointing again, just regular "sales" which are a common occurrence across the year.

  • No deal at this price, sorry

  • +14

now im annoyed that i won't get something that i didn't know i wanted only several hours ago -_0 lol

    • Touché.

  • No deal sorry op

  • Are there different paperwhite models? Could've sworn i bought it for $139 or so off dicksmith

    • Looks like it's the same one.
It's so cheap that I have doubts whether anyone will manage to get one at this low price.

  • +2

Btw.. you guys can still get this for either $135 or $142.50 with a little effort.

    1. Get your 10% off Woolworths gift cards I assume you have a stack of
    2. Use your 10% off cards to buy $150 worth of Dick Smith Gift Cards from Woolworths. This week there's the 10% bonus value offer. So you actually get $165 in Dick Smith Cards.
    3. Do your maths = $150 x 90% = $135 (i.e. that's how much you actually paid)

If you don't already have 10% off WW gift cards, you can either:
    1. Buy WW ecards from CR for 5% discount = $142.50 for kindle
    2. Buy WW scoopons at 10% off and wait it out until Jan but risk the sale being over = $135

  • +1

For what it's worth it may be a promotional error, the 6" touch is currently $99.

    http://www.dicksmith.com.au/ereaders/kindle-6-black-touch-wi…

    • +2

save $8, what sort of a knock out deal is that. $99 is more believable on the kindle paperwhite for boxing day.

      • It's not actually believable, as that's pretty much no profit for the retailer.

The Touch for a measly $8 discount is more believable.
