Wow, just spent the last few hours looking for one of these on the cheap. Great timing. Good deal mate. :)

  • Can these be set up as a router only?

    • +1

yes, you can use it as router only, I have one, it is NBN ready. But there are more choices for a router within this price range.

  • Great modem router at a great price.

I bought a D5 for this price a few months back!

  • Yes, easy setup. Just set it to be in a "Wireless Router" mode, then enter your ISP provided login and password for access to their Servers, then the ISP provided Primary and Secondary DNS, wait about a minute and it should automatically login. If not, restart the modem. I have checked the NBN speed both through this Archer D7 and also (NBN) directly connected to the PC. There is no difference in the NBN line speeds. This means it is not detrimental to your PC system network configeration in any way.
Only one drawback is that there is no VOIP facilities if you want a home phone connected this way.

    • If you put a ata on though I think it should be fine…..

      • ata?

  • Was planning to pull the trigger, but found out that the "Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 2200" card in my Lenovo Z580 laptop doesn't support 5Ghz band. Time to get a new laptop first … :)

    • -1

      It does 2.4GHz too.
5GHz is only good if you're in the same room otherwise it will switch to 2.4GHz anyway.

      • I know … My current TP-Link router is single band 2.4 GHz. What I meant was, what's the point of upgrading to a Dual band (2.4 & 5 Ghz) router when my laptop doesn't support the 5 Ghz band ? I simply cannot get the benefits/speed of 5 Ghz band.

      • +1

Errrr no, I get 5GHz coverage through my whole house to several devices, plus both front and back yards without an issue. 5GHz is also advantageous in that there are a lot more clear channels to use, 2.4 only has 3 channels that don't overlap each other so you end up fighting for bandwidth with any other 2.4GHz access point in range. For most people, the reduction in range won't matter as you'll still see improved performance with a lower number of signal "bars"

Also, your current laptop might not support wifi in 5GHz, but your next one most likely will, as will your mobile phone.

    • If you'd prefer to just upgrade and are happy to open up your laptop(or plug in a ~$40-$50 USB wireless adaptor), you can generally replace most wireless cards (if there are unscrewable panels on the back). One off ebay for example could cost as little as $37 delivered (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-7260-…) and a driver update and probably less than half an hour of your time.

  • 2.4G was a little so so compared to my netgear but 3 x 13db antennas from ebay $9 total means i get 4 bars even through 2 x double brick walls, even the chromecast in that room is happly http://i.imgur.com/NNZkdu6.jpg

    • HI mate. Can you tell me exactly which antennas they are so I can get some. Cheers. I just can't find any 13dB antennas for $9.

  • Bought this.

Keen to now be able to get US netflix, quality cctv cameras, wemo lighting, and the numerous WiFi connections we have……without it dropping out like the 10 year old Thomson brick we currently have……

  • I need to replace my Boblite from IINET. I need greater range and speed - should this be sufficient?

  • just bought one… been wanting to upgrade from my old billion 7800NL for a while, just been waiting for the right price.

  • Is this compatible with FTTN connections or just as a router on FTTP?

  • Isnt shipping another $10? how did you get this price with shipping??? thanks!

    • Just add it to your cart and it should minus the $10 shipping fee

      • You can get the insured (13.95) shipping free too.

  • This one is actually the best router to use with openwrt today.

  • My modem is on it's way out, pulled the trigger as soon as I saw this deal. Thanks.

  • How would this compare to a Billion 7800n?

  • +2

You can also change to the insured shipping option which is about $13.95 for free too.

  • Thanks OP. I couldn't decide to buy…..then my signal dropped. Decision made! :)

  • Ok guys.
I'll be moving to a new place that is NBN ready.
    Is this NBN compatible?
(I assume it'll be cheaper to byo modem/router then get the NBN plan, rather than getting a NBN plan with free modem)

    • I'm no IT expert. But with my NBN the box on the wall is your modem and I just needed to buy a router for wireless.

  • Probably in the minority here - but I went through two of these units earlier in the year. 5Ghz network would disappear and unit would completely lock up (web control panel dead). TP-Link support was pretty weak - one suggested solution was to minimise the number of devices connecting at once (?!) and I was advised that a reset every couple of days should not be considered unusual.

    • TP-Link is a budget brand, so you get the support you pay for (very little)

      • -1

        You are kidding?

D-Link would have to be right down there.

TP-Link would be right up there as the best consumer grade brand.

    • Try to set channel width at 5GHz to the minimal value (20 IIRC). Helped in my case.

  • Thanks OP, missed out on these when they were last going for about $130, jumped straight on it this time.

  • I bought one thanks for reminding me.

  • Sold out :(

  • Out of stock :(

  • had it in my cart and was checking out while said OOS… :-)

  • Bought one of these not long ago. Been a good modem aside from the fact it can't throttle bandwidth to devices on the network…

    • -2

Install openwrt (or gargoyle if you want better web interface) and you'll get this and other great features.

      • +2

OpenWrt doesn't support the modem/routers. It only support the routers (Archer C series)
