  • Who would have ever thought it would be possible to travel around Asia for $3!

  • birthday sale during mid year is better

  • -1

Malaysia Airlines has very similar fares from the end of Aug onwards for MEL-KUL and they are a full service airline. Its worth checking their fares out as well.

  • Awesome. For those flying from Sydney keep in mind that theres a good chance that AirAsia will begin flying from 1st July. At $53 from Gold Coast + the fact that december flights are only being released tonight (meaning best availability) its still too tempting to fly via gold coast!

    • Quackster, why do you think Air Asia will fly out of Sydney on July 1?

AirAsia X sets Sydney date AirAsia X is poised to commence flights to Sydney from July 1, despite the carrier still awaiting regulatory documentation from the Malaysian Government. Airasia X chief executive, Azran Osman-Rani told Travel Today operations would commence “as soon as we got that piece of paper”, which could be within weeks. The long-haul offshoot of AirAsia has been planning to launch flights to Sydney for some time, having solved a dispute between itself and
the Malaysian Government in November last year (Travel Today, November 19). Osman-Rani said they would have ideally liked five months to sell tickets before the first flight, but would be satisfied with a minimum of three months.
Osman-Rani said he expected AirAsia X to be operating a daily service to Sydney as soon as possible with plans to have twice daily flights within a year of operation.

  • It's $398RM returned from mel to kl assuming the tickets are available for the journey to kl. With rounding, fees etc, that works out to be less than $150AU return.

    • Nope, its AUD70 for Mel-KL and RM199 for KL-Mel
Which works out to be approx AUD150

      • How to do you see the Mel-KL price?

        • what you see depends on the "country" field at the top right corner.
Change it to malaysia, it will bring you to the homepage.
Come back to OZBargain and click the above link again, it will now display in RM instead of AUD, and will reflect the KL-Mel fares.

(For the reverse, set your country to Australia)

  • I'm a bit annoyed its A$129/RM199 from Melbourne but only A$99/RM149 from Gold Coast. Melbourne should be cheaper since its a shorter flight than Gold Coast.

    • I thought Melbourne is further away from KL?

    • From KL, Gold Coast is 4043 miles away while Melbourne is 3918 miles away so not much difference.

    • Melbourne has higher airport taxes than the Gold Coast, which helps explain the difference.

    • Distance and tax difference have nothing to do with it.
If a world map was to be drawn up according to flight fares it would be severely distorted.
It's simply a case of demand pricing (Melbourne has a lot more KL-bound travellers than Gold coast).
Airport tax is added on top of the published fare.

      • These are advertised as all-in fares (this is indicated above the prices on the sale page)
so airport taxes do affect it, though obviously not as much as demand.

  • I'm pretty sure Gold Coast is closer to KL than Melbourne.
Anyone know exactly when these fares become available for booking?

    • should be 4am March 3 because we are 4 hours ahead of them

      • Gold Coast = 4 am March 3
        Melbourne = 3 am March 3

    • tee hee hee

  • I really don't know how this works.
AirAsia only allows you to book up to 8 months in Advance.
Therefore, you can't select a booking date beyond October 2010.
So, how can you book for period oct - feb ?

Can someone tell me, cos i REALLY want to know.

    • you have to wait until the sale starts for their booking dates to be available.

      • ic… thanks.

      • Seems that the dates are there now, but I cant find any of the advertised fares.

  • "Fares are not available during embargo period."

Anyone know what the "embargo period" is?

  • As usual for Air Asia their site is going horrible slow, making it very hard to organise flights

    • +1

Took from 3am to 4:15am. But finally got the site to load and work for me.

I found the $70 flights were only in November. Outside November there were some $106 flights and upward.
Also once you add on taxes, Convenience fee, luggage and picking your seat. The total return cost to KL was $310 per person. Significantly more than the advertised $150 per person.

However, if you want real bargain, I managed to find a premium seat to New Delhi for $0. Once all the fees were added, ended up being $25!

      • You need to add Airport tax too on top of that RM199 from Melbourne. Its not an "All In Fare".

        • These are advertised as all-in fares. This is stated above the prices on the sale page. (Whether you can still find flights at this price is another story).

        • +1

It is an "ALL IN FARE" which includes all taxes.
However, unless you were online before this afternoon, you will no longer be able to get the advertised price. The prices increases as booking increases.

For example, at 10am this morning, I booked MEL-KL for 25th NOV
          for AUD62 + 67 tax = AUD 129

But if you check the EXACT same flight right now, the price has risen
          to AUD196 + 67 tax = AUD 263

In a period of 6 hours, the price has more than doubled!!!

  • why http://www.adioso.com/ doesn't reflect this sale deal?

    • Adioso is updated once a day, I think at midnight. So it won't pick up the fares until tomorrow.

Having said that, I believe the staff can update it sooner if they find out about a good special. You could try emailing them.

      • searched for November on adioso, it replied:

Okay, we do have flights from "Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur", but not at the dates/times you've specified.

The latest flights we have that may be suitable are on the 9th October, 2010.

  • Managed a return trip to vietnam for 2 for less than 300 each, including meals, extra luggage and buses into KL. not bad haha. the most expensive part of the trip is gonna be return airfares from syd to the gold coast which sucks. anyone else get any good deals?

  • I was actually hoping to fly from Syd —> Melb —-> KL —-> Guangzhou but it may seem too much of a detour to save a bit of cash. If anyone from general experience knows if the maths behind it all seems a bit too much of a waste of time and effort to go through? Bear in mind I wouldn't mind staying in each of those cities for a day or two to check it out !

    • I would highly recommend that you do not fly any budget airline then.
All budget airlines have a clause in their t&c which state that they do not guarantee flight times nor that the the flight would proceed.

Therefore, if you miss a connecting flight due to a flight delay, there is absolutely no compensation.

      • Travel Insurance (with travel inconvenience coverage) would cover that, wouldn't it?

        • Monetarily, yes, you get compensated.
But I just don't like the feeling of missing a connecting flight and having to find another one, especially when overseas on a holiday.

          • @amkssg: Definitely don't just assume you will get compensated by your travel insurance. You often will if the delay is caused by the weather, but if you miss the connecting flight due to delays related to the airline (air asia) you probably won't be compensated.

Best thing to do is read the fine print to be sure and also allow sufficient gaps between flights.

    • Better take VivaMacau from Sydney to Macau (just a couple of hours by bus from Guangzhou) You can get there in one budget flight.

      • VivaMacau will route its Australia flight to Melbourne… So no more Sydney-Macau flight in a couple of months… All.. fly to Melbourne….

  • I need to go to London in November. I booked my OOL-KUL return but Ive seen much better prices from AirAsia for the KUL-STN leg in previous sales, with the price hovering around 699 MYR (without extras) one way this time. DO you think I should go ahead and book now or wait and hope for a better London sale before November?

  • Just bought Cooloongatta to KL return for $254.50 and then KL to Hanoi return for $100 return. All with meals, 20kg luggage, taxes and some insurance for the Cooloongatt-KL return flights. Best deal ever.

  • $160 perth to bali return including meals and luggage =]

  • Those tempted to book flights to/from Asia on AirAsiaX, be careful.

Most recently, my wife and I were stranded in Abu Dhabi when AirAsiaX announced they were canceling service to/from Abu Dhabi in January this year. They didn’t notify us, their stranded passengers, until Feb 10th. Neither did they offer any accommodation nor answer our emails asking for help. We had to get back to Malaysia on our own. They won’t reimburse our added expense either.

  • Also…

My KL/Abu Dhabi trip departed KL on Jan 25. The return from Abu Dhabi was to be on March 1. I strongly suspect AirAsiaX had decided to vacate the market prior to my departure. If they knew the return portion of my ticket could never be used, why didn't the check-in agent in KL tell me?

A travel forum (simpliflying.com) posting had this to say,

"Incidentally, I had learnt about the route closure (Abu Dhabi) on Twitter around Jan 25th, and Azran himself (AirAsiaX CEO) made a public announcement in Singapore on Jan 28th. That's why I'm surprised that as a passenger who had booked a ticket wasn't informed earlier."

Farm animals get more respect than AirAsiaX passengers.
