Please Help Me Get Rid of German Cockroaches

Hi guys,

I rent a one bedroom apartment in a block of 10 apartments. Cockroaches just freak me out, can't feel good at home if I see them here, I even scream every time I see them :(, so please give me some advice.

Background: started to see a couple of cockroaches, I've noticed that mostly they are coming out the water boiler (the one that supplies the hot water in the shower, sink, etc), which is locked in a door next to the kitchen sink. The door is locked with nails because the door is broken, it didn't close properly so the landlord just added them so it wouldn't be wide open before I moved in. Since the boiler door is locked I only spray "Mortein" around the door gap every night, I've added Mortein baits (those black boxes), and recently got boric acid on the kitchen floor. I've added the plain powder but the cockroaches don't seem attracted to it, only one has died from it in a weeks' time. It seems that after I add new baits the cockroaches stop coming out for 2-3 weeks, then I see baby cockroaches and in a couple of days they are big again and coming out. I usually see 2-3 cockroaches per night. The on-off situation has happened already 3 times, they seem to be gone and they are back.

What other options do I have?

  • Since I think the nest is inside/next the boiler, and the kitchen is small and doesn't have any window, if I open the door where the boiler is contained, can I safely spray Mortein or other spray there?

  • Can I put some boric acid powder next to the boiler without causing any safety issue? (I mean because of the chemicals contained in the acid next to a heat source)

  • Am I using the boric acid in a wrong way since I think the cockroaches are not attracted to it? I'm adding some of it on top of a piece of paper (just in case it may damage the vinyl floor -not sure)

P.S. I live in Melbourne, so it's a little warm at the time. Not sure if they came because of the weather or the new neighbour next door. I've googled that it's not safe to use a pest bomb in apartments. Apologies for the lengthy question and not so good grammar.

Thanks!!!

EDIT: Thanks guys for all your comments, I really appreciate your help. I've made a list with all the recipes and products to try. I've used one of the recipes and they are gone for now (hopefully forever), but getting ready with other things in case they are back.

You should try boric acid. Boric acid kills most species of cockroaches regardless of their nationality (lame joke hah!) and if used correctly with cockroach bait, can be effective pest control.

A basic formula is to apply boric acid mixed in with condensed milk, then with a bit of cinnamon powder to form a 'dough'. Then place the little balls of doughy death where the cockroaches might hide and nest. Make sure that boric acid doesn't get into your food preparation areas though and don't use kitchen utensils to prepare it either. Make sure your kids and pets don't eat them either.

        You should try boric acid.

Did you read the OP Scrim? :P

and recently got boric acid on the kitchen floor.

        • +12

Nope, skim reading is my forte.

And yes, it does appear OP is not using the boric acid the right way — it needs to be combined with stuff the cockies find tasty or they will just ignore them. As long as there is a better source of food in the house (e.g food crumbs and your garbage bin) they wouldn't resort to eating pure acid powder.

Yea, use this or Bayer Maxforce/similar product. Put little dots everywhere around their home/entrance. I wiped out literally hundreds in a week using this.

Mother wasn't monitoring the fish tank properly and they had made the water and fish food supply their home. Population boomed but they would only come out at night. One night I came home from work and the entire couch was crawling with them, all over the floor, coffee table, up the walls. Everywhere.

I put this gel every second step for them and they came out and ate it -straight away-. Then they go home, regurgitate it to their friends and say "hectic look what I found it's delicious". And then a day later their nervous system goes ballistic. Then they shit and die, and their friends eat their shit and repeat the cycle. Good thing is they mostly die back in their home rather than just out in public.

    • Thanks! I've tried many things except gel, will give it a go.

  • +3

You will most likely get the best result with a gel. Goliath is probably the number one choice at the moment. About $60 online.
    http://pestandlawnwarehouse.com.au/?product=goliath-gel

You will need to clean that cupboard out as best you can. Try to wipe it down to get rid of any aerosol residue. Remove everything else, the baits etc and then apply the gel. Place it around the power box which is on the side of the boiler. You should see wiring entering there. Then put a few blobs around the base of the boiler. They will be underneath it as well. Have a look where the cupboards join the wall at the back and place some gel there too. You also need the landlord to put a door with a vent on there to allow the heat from the boiler to escape.

    • Thanks @sraymond! Should I leave the door open when I put the gel on the side of the boiler? for the ventilation issue in the meantime?

      • $60, call a pest guy and get them to do it for that price.

        • +2

Yeah right. Plenty of pesties dying to do a German cockroach job for $60……….not.

I use this type of concentrate which I really like, compared to the baits. I dilute in an old half cut milk container. Then, i use an old paint brush and "paint" it along the edges of my kitchen where the roaches are likely to be. My best catch was 6 dead coaches the next morning. I use it for outdoors as well, lots of dead roaches the next morning. http://www.bunnings.com.au/chemspray-500ml-ant-spider-and-co…

    • Hi Cronut, thanks for the advice! Since I rent, just to confirm, does that chemical would cause some sort of stain in the drawers or walls (I'd like to use it around their nest entrance)?

      • +1

Hi Cherry, It is a white concentrate but I am not sure if it will stain your drawers or walls. It however doesn't stain my timber floors. It would be good to get a couple of mortein "bombs" from coles or bunnings for extra protection, they're like $10-$15 when on sale. http://www.mortein.com.au/products/bombs/

        • Here the walls and drawers are like a light yellowish colour, could try a small part to confirm.

          Thanks for your help!

You cannot contain german cockroaches with sprays or bombs. You need ADVION OR Maxforce. Advion is half the price of Maxforce and does equally good job if not better. Buy a tube from ebay, and you will thank me for it :D

      +1 for advion gel

Also spray a barrier with a bifenthrin based active ingredient

Professional pest control is another (albeit expensive) option, they'll usually require you to have a follow up treatment after about 4 weeks for German roaches, so they can go back and kill everything that hatched after the first service.

If you see them after the second treatment you can call the pest company for a warranty service

      • I've been thinking about hiring a pest control company, but thought first of getting advise from OZBargainers. Will try all these options, and if it doesn't work will have no choice than hiring them. Can't live in the same place :(

        • +2

It looks like it varies state to state, but if you can prove they were there when you moved in/you didn't create the problem, then the landlord would be responsible for the cost of professional pest control.

        • @girlshaped: Thanks! They were not here when I moved in, but when the new neighbors moved in :(

    • Thanks! Definitely will try one of those :)

    • Thanks for the tip of Advion.

I did more research to find that Advion is Dupont's brand name for Indoxacarb.

At Bunnings they sell Raid Cockroach Baits which has Indoxacarb as the active ingredient, but in a much higher concentration than the other prducts (9.5g/kg vs 2.5g/kg in Mortein and 6g/kg for most of the gels).

I'm guessing that the gels are still more effective being out in the open, but for a mild amount of roaches, I am hoping these raid ones work well.

  • +1

Why are you worried about using cockroach bombs? I've used them before in apartments, do you have ventilation between units or something? just close all the windows, plug the sinks, etc. Just buy the cheap bombs from coles or wherever, they all have the same ingredients and use one per room. Give all your cutlery, plates and cups a wash after as well as your benches. Open up all the cupboards, rewash all your clothes if need be.

You'll get rid of them for at least 2 weeks, LOL sad I know.
I think the best way to get rid of roaches is to end their food source, do the dishes and floors before you go to bed and make sure they're not eating chipboard or your degrading carpet or anything. They were eating the carpet in my old place I think, there were probably over a hundred in that place no matter how many bombs or baits I used. They were the German ones as well.

    • +1

Every time I use those baits in the black boxes from Mortein they stop coming, but then after 2-3 week they come back :(

I've been keeping everything really clean, got lots of carpet though. Haven't seen them in the carpet yet, mostly in the kitchen and the walls. Were you able to get rid of them at the end?

  • +4

Had the same issue in an apartment I was living in years ago, tried everything, ended up selling. Problem was, no matter how well you go about killing these pests, if your neighbors don't do the same thing they'll just come back. We had a DHS property below and because the tenant was filthy, no matter what we did the cockroaches still came back.

    • :( not good news. But I'm afraid that might be the problem, don't know if it's the summer or the new neighbor that brought in the cockroaches, just moved in this year so it hadn't been hot until now. I think we share the kitchen drain. Anyway, have to keep trying.

put a few lizards and snakes in the house, they love roaches!

    • +7

then bears to take care of the snake problem and lizard problem!

      • +9

Then some bear fighting Gorillas. When wintertime rolls in, the Gorillas simply freeze to death.

    • Been thinking on getting a cat for that hehehe

      • then add some daddy long legs spiders as they will also catch roaches lol

  • +3

Since you a are renting, you can tell this to your landlord or agent. They should be able to organise pest control.

    • Thanks! Do you think that's their responsibility?

Sorry, not much experience with my rights as tenant.

      • +1

Yes i have friends for this done for her unit.

        • Thanks!

      • +3

Yes, this should be the landlords responsibility. He has sealed the door where they are coming from with nails which makes it near impossible for you to effectively eradicate them. He should be paying for professional pest control company to come in and fix the situation.

In one of my old apartments we had rats get into the walls, the landlord dragged his feet with getting pest control until one of the rats chewed through the wiring at the back of the air-conditioner. After that happened they got there ass in to gear pretty quickly and got pest control in.

Personally I would give the tenancy authority in your state a call and explain the situation and whether they believe the landlord should fix this. Their advice is free and you can use the information you gain to approach the landlord. If they claim he is responsible and he does nothing then you can also escalate the matter through them.

        • Thanks! You are right. I'll get advice from them before calling the agent.

"Am I using the boric acid in a wrong way since I think the cockroaches are not attracted to it? I'm adding some of it on top of a piece of paper (just in case it may damage the vinyl floor -not sure)"

Mix it into condensed milk so its a paste, spoon it onto some alfoil.
Tried and proven cockroach cookie recipe.

    • Thanks! Got to try it. Last night I mixed the boric acid with sugar, flour and cocoa and left it on the kitchen floor in many places, and not even a single cockroach died. It was so disappointing to see no dead bodies at all :(

Goose step out of the apartment, they will follow.

Professional pest controller and you'll need two visits. Germans don't die with one visit.

I would say if you are renting it is the landlords responsibility. Don't spend your own money.

To use borax - mix it with something sweet (honey, jam) and then smear that paste where you want the ants to eat it. I usually put it on a small square of baking paper, so I can just pick it up and throw it away afterwards.

    • +3

"I would say if you are renting it is the landlords responsibility. Don't spend your own money."

      Rubbish.
I have had rental properties for over 15 years and only paid for the very first visit from a professional pest controller.

Since then it is the tenants responsibility to maintain cleanliness and pests during their stay and it is their responsibility to get a professional pest controller in on vacate.

      • Oh wow, I had no idea. That is interesting. Thanks!!

    • "Germans don't die with one visit."

Nope, they keep returning for their towels.

  • +3

The boric acid is the right idea, but all you've got right now is a poison and no reason for the roaches to eat it. You need to attract them to it!

Proper Boric Acid - Cut some cardboard into rectangle strips. like, idk, 4cm wide and 8cm long. mix 2 parts flour, 1 part boric acid and 1 part of syrup/honey/etc. Mix until it gets to a texture of peanut butter. Put a little bit of the mixture onto one end of the cardboard, and do it until you run out, then put the traps everywhere.

The sweet syrup and honey attracts them. The flour adds bulk and the acid kills them :) It will take a while, but it works remarkably well. That's your long term solution.

You use the cardboard because when the mixture dries it hardens and the cardboard lets you easily add/move/remove the poison bait. You can also sprinkle the acid over the traps but you really need to avoid the risk of breathing in the acid.

    • Thanks! I used a similar mixture but it ended up in powder, and none of them died :(

However, haven't tried to make it into balls or dough, will try it :)

      • +1

You needed more binder (honey/maple syrup/etc) and to mix it really well. It'll form hard thanks to the flour.

One cup of boric + two cups of flour + one cup of maple syrup is what i used. A month later I haven't seen a single roach.

        • Yes, I think I used all the same amounts of boric, raw sugar and cocoa; but I've noticed that you doubled up some ingredients. Have to change recipe, thanks!

    • Any ideas if Advion is still effective when hardened? Still lots of the bait left but all hardened. THanks

  • +2

As someone else said, you need to stop the roaches coming in from your neighbours apartments. Are there any gaps in the ceiling, corners, or around pipes in the walls? You need to putty or use expanding foam around these. I had the same problem at our place, couldn't get rid of them and they were breeding in the hot water tank, ended up filling a hole in the ceiling and then bombing the place with traps.

    • I think they are on the hot water tank as well, there are some holes on the walls which I guess are for ventilation but haven't seen any animals around those. But now that you mention, just under the sink around the pipe there is a gap between the wall and the drawers under the sink. Since this is a rental, do you know if I have to inform the real estate agent about me filling the gaps?
      Thanks!

    • +2

I am surprised this is the first time this has been mentioned in the thread..

Sealing any gaps like above should help, but if you are in an older unit may not be totally possible.

My thought is you need to spray the building and the individual units. Or at least check with your neighbors and see if they have the same problem. If they do, its futile I think to just kill the ones in your unit. In the grand scheme of things if your neighbors have them and they are in the overall building, killing the ones in your unit probably wont solve the problem. The germans cochroaches breed pretty quickly. Each female can lay over 300 eggs. (according to google :) ) And once hatched in a few weeks those babies can create more. So if one gets in your place you are screwed.

My building gets sprayed every 2-3 years. When the do the company posts a discount for the individual units to get them treated. Outside we see the cockroaches all the time, but by the time they get in our unit, they are usually dead. We usually keep our patio and windows open, so the big roaches to fly in often. We also have those mortein bates that kills the nest scattered around the house in every nook and cranny. Seems effective.

this comment is just based on my experience dealing with them in sydney.

      Good luck!

      • Thanks!

I find this keeps the roaches and everything else out of our house: http://www.bunnings.com.au/defender-5l-home-defense-surface-… it doesn't last 9 months as advertised, about 6, worth a try. I have no idea what a German cockroach is compared to any other cockroach though…

    • I think this type of cockroaches reproduce more often. Have you noticed if the spray leaves any type of stain?

      Thanks!

Definitely no stain, have been using it for years.

I had big problems with cockroaches and ordered this gel - see below - from the USA.

Also live in apartment complex with issues of roaches coming from other units.

    Absolutely nuked them within days.

Haven't seen cockroaches in more than a year.

Here's the product - it's apparently the best of the best.

You wont need six tubes - I shared mine with a friend for pest control at a restaurant.

We have problems with german cockroaches due to previous filthy owners.

Am using baits and surface spray but most importantly, see a cockroach pick it up and bin it. What happens with germans is: as soon as they know they're going to die, they release their egg sac and you get new cockroaches that aren't affected.

The house was crawling with them coming into winter this year, and now there aren't very many and we are summer peaking. Just got to stay on the situation. There is no 'nest'. They just are.

You need access to the cupboard so that you can spray them all and clean the cupboard out afterwards. The bodies, and eggs, must be disposed of. These cockies love anywhere it's warm, that's why they get in the digital displays of electrical appliances. Where you can, keep these appliances turned off between uses. Keep anything that makes heat away from where they go - like the kitchen bench. They will heat seek before food. I keep the jug off the kitchen bench on a small wire rack.

Hi i use the following: http://www.amazon.com/Trap---roach-Twin-Pack-Traps/dp/B00XAW…

see youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_DwrmffDBo, it's different product but it works the same.

Previously try everything else, but doesn't work. The unit have massive cocroaches all year long doesn't matter its winter. Still remember they can be anywhere you can think of. The soonest I use the roach trap, it captured around 50+ german roaches in a week then after that I pretty much almost roach free.

Use 2-3 traps in the first week, with the one next to the kitchen bin captured the most roaches. after that just use regularly every 3 months if I'm not mistaken. The trap used by half of the Japanese households - claimed the packaging.

    Highly recommended.

    • Hi foxmulder! I checked your link, silly question… so even after the cockroaches see other bodies glued to the trap still keep coming up?

      Thanks :)

      • +3

Haha yes, it makes me wonder roaches doesn't really communicate well with one another - but I guess the bait is the magic here, they can't resist!

    • am going to try this trap

      • Hi Snook, let me know how you go with it.

        • Will do. Still not delivered yet!

  • +1

HI Snook, that's new info! Sometimes I kill them but wait until my husband comes home to pick up the dead bodies, I freak out with them :( anyway, didn't know that they release their egg sacs immediately. I'll have to do it from now on.

So, you had in winter?! I thought they would come out only on summer.

I usually turn off all electrics right after use, even the hot water tank is off, since it's warm no need hot water. Only fridge stays on.

    Thanks!

    • German cockroaches easily live all year round if they can find somewhere warm to be.

I have an irretrievable body in my dishwasher display. They get into small spaces for the heat, grow and can't get out. This is how they stuff up the electronics of kitchen appliances.

They love the dishwasher and around the sink because of the heating.

  • +1

When using boric acids to fight roaches you want to be cutting any open water source for them. The way it works is that boric acids drys out their body unless there is a water source. It is best to be mixed with same granule size of white sugar with acids so that granules of acid and sugar should be indifferent to unsuspecting roaches. They are very clever buggers that won't defeated easily with many bates and poisons. The best method I have seen in the past is the 50/50 mix of acid and sugar, which worked everytime for me.

    • Thanks, definitely I've been using the boric acid wrong, I was mixing with brown sugar, so it doesn't blend it.

  • +1

Please use a pest control guy as they know how to deal with them.

That saying sprinkling the boric acid powder around the place works well as long as you keep it dry and yes you need the right gel for the german Cockroaches.

  • +2

+1 for Advion and Maxforce. Delivery is usually same price as the gel, so I say get both. Apply one with the closest expiration date. You don't need to drop it on their nest or draw a perimeter. Simply put a drop or two on their pathways in places they normally roam. You should see results in 2-3 days. In a couple of weeks, the problem should be gone. If you still see the roaches a month after, apply the second gel. Repeat the process about a year later. If you see a roach around during this time, you can often tell if his local or a visitor. If in presence of danger he runs fast and straight like he is on a mission to a nearest hideout, you probably have a nest. If he seems lost or erratic, usually a tourist. If you get German tourists in an apartment block, usually you can't solve it without getting new neighbors or harassing your strata.

Also pest control guys for a simple apartment roach problem is usually an overkill, all they do is put Advion around and look busy for 20 minutes.

    • Thanks @mysakh, good to know. I've been thinking of hiring pest control companies, but if they only use that better I try to add it myself first.

  • A pest control guy can fumigate the area which is the only fast way to get rid of them all.

    • How often are you renewing them?

I've been using exactly those and after a few days of getting new baits they stop coming out; but then after 3 weeks cockroaches start coming out again. Then I put new baits out, then again they stop coming out and so…. but not sure if the adults are dying and new ones are born or what. Thanks!

      • same here :(
