(iOS App) Pocket Earth PRO Offline Maps (US $4.99 -> Free)

820

How's it Work?

Just select the cities, regions, or even whole countries you want to download, and it will be available for offline use, complete with information on thousands of POIs (Points of Interest), travel guides and Wikipedia articles.

To do this we utilize community driven open data from a number of amazing projects: openstreetmap.org, naturalearthdata.com, wikivoyage.org, and wikipedia.org. We use some magik to compress and package it in a format optimized for mobile devices. Pocket Earth then renders its beautiful vector maps on your device using our OpenGL ES based MagikMap technology. So unlike other map apps which only download pre-rendered images (map tiles), our maps are only a fraction of the size, and you can better control the appearance of the map with different style sheets, data sources, and map layers.

To learn more about Pocket Earth or the community driven open data sources that we use, please visit our website.

Don’t forget this:
1. Using the GPS features of this app can significantly affect battery life. Only leave GPS enabled when you need to use it.
2. This app uses data from the amazing community driven open mapping project called openstreetmap.org! Coverage detail may vary by region, please visit our website to check the map detail for your regions of interest.
3. Does not currently support all asian texts on the map (Chinese, Japanese, etc).

Happy New Year to everyone :)

  • How does it compare to the other similar offerings? I find Nokia Here and Maps.Me both quite good. City Maps 2 Go isn't.

    • Yes city maps to go is absolutely shit
Got first hand experience in dubai last night

      • Did you see the fire?

        • Yea was right behind it !! I can't believe they are saying only 1 casualty and 16 people injured. It was absolute chaos

        • @usama91: Yeah man the Dubai authorities trying to brush it under the carpet. One paramedic on seen reported more than 60 people treated for injuries. But I must say, the Burj Khalifa fireworks display was spectacular last night (watched recorded Sydney ones when I got back to my hotel, pretty good too).

          Happy new year everyone!

        • @FaultyMango: we just left and went to Marina jbr area for dinner

    • Maps.me rocks!

  • This any good for china?

    • Not very, it's English only and not very detailed. Use google maps as it has both English and Chinese name for roads and locations, or if you are good at Chinese, use Baidu maps.

  • i have used ulmon maps for awhile when they become free, very useful offline maps with GPS
    also ulmon comes free occasionally

    • Try Maps.Me or Nokia Here next time. So much better.

This is the only thing i missed about my iPhone before switching to Android.

Have tried ulmon, maps.me, here maps, osmand+… Each have something good about them, Pocket earth combines it all.

  • +2

Just tried this software, this is certainly better than CityMaps2Go and maps.me. However they are using the free openstreetmap which is not very precise and lack of some details and functionalities compared with Google maps. For example, there are no street numbers unless you click somewhere on the map. For those of you do not know, Google maps in ios also support offline downloading now. (method here: http://maphappy.org/2015/01/how-to-enable-offline-maps-in-th…) . I will stick with Google maps and keep it as a backup.

    • thanks will check out this solution

    • But offline Google can't do offline search nor routing

      • Yes, it can do offline search and routing for the downloaded area. For the routing it only do driving but not walking path. Try it yourself.

  • it's not free anymore !
