Free No Logs Unlimited Vpn - Pegasus VPN. Windows Only $0

40

Haven't tried it yet but looks like this VPN has not been posted on Ozbargain before.
May be a handy alternative to Cyberghost or Steganos.

I dont know anymore than you about this service, but I guess privacy and logging should be taken lightly, until proven otherwise.

If needed, you can run Tor or JonDoBrowser within the Vpn shell, and/or disable flash/ssl/tls etc, then a browser ssl-proxy to increase anonimity a great deal.

Software is only a few MB download, and works on XP.

    What's the catch?

    • Metadata?

      • Probably…

        • +2

More likely it's run by the NSC or some other spook agency. How else would a business generate enough revenue to cover the cost of servers to handle thousands of netflix users etc? Or have I fallen prey to my own conspiracy theories?

        • @newdad:
Beats me. Costs must be covered.
My guess is that this will be free for a few months, then paid users only.
So free while getting the bugs out.

Anyway even if it was a spy network tool or the like, it will still shield against hotspot sniffing, or ip logging.

      • Would using TOR cover that?

Seems suss and you haven't even tried it yet.

Also how is this a deal if its always been free?

    • I have now and it's easy to signup, quick startup, change countries, and no ads.
I'm not for or against, just that the user will never know the risks of any vpn.
Using two independent layers of encrypted tunneling should (?) solve that for normal users privacy.

I think the concept of a free vpn is dodgy as.

    Why?

I've seen many business ideas/concepts with trivial facades such as Betternet which claims that people will install apps after they use the VPN. Also vpnbook which you can buy packages from, but heck I don't know anyone in their right mind who would pay for it, especially when there are other better paid alternatives (apparently)… Pretty much no one does the trivial activity which they mention!

It's a bit like HYIPs such as Banners Brokers, they make a good plausible concept but in reality if you dig deeper you will find no one actually buys the product, or there are no advertisers using the network (BB). Or you do autosurf and do a little automated surfing to generate views and somehow that makes a lot of money, bullshit. In reality it is a ponzi scheme.

Kudos for this Pegasus VPN for being so open and transparent about not needing to pay, and having no revenue structure. Makes it really obvious what they are doing in my opinion. Either data mining the stuff or injecting advertising into the webpages. This is dangerous because sometimes their ad network will accidentally/intentionally serve you malware and boom, your screwed. Chances are your adblocker won't work either because they are serving it through an custom injection method and your adblocker only looks for specific advertising code.

Also, there are reasons why you shouldn't use TOR together with a VPN as UDP is incompatible and will leak, plus other issues that will flag you. Okay, one big thing you should know is this: Remember how Optus/Telstra send your true phone number in their packet header at some point in time? Well, a VPN can do a similar thing which basically screws up your TOR anonymity. Other types of malformed packets due to use of a free VPN can also lead to exposing your identity.

One would need to RE the file before continuing further, even then the VPN itself might have its flaws. i.e. Using PPTP or an old IPsec protocol, and then leaving their vpn unlogged, but putting a MITM in between you and the server. lol. That way they aren't misleading anyone with their no logs rule.

    • I just realised the file you have to download might be the payload itself… That could be why it is windows only. I haven't got time to analyse it, but as it is midnight, it is best to steer clear until someone can vet the executable file.

Seriously, don't worry about metadata unless you are a white hat, because using other stuff is pretty much going to land you in hot water because some crafty person out there is going to be a criminal waiting to prey.

    • I was under the impression most bet on people's laziness. Odds are you'll not be bothered unsubscribing or looking for another 'free' VPN, and will probably pay.

Then again I'm sure data mining is always more than likely.

  • Server locations? can't find from their websites..

    • Seven including Singapore, Russia, Germany, us, uk, France, Canada eh?

There aren't any ads involved. T&C is short and seems reasonable.
BUT, I didn't see anything about the company, people, real phone# or address/country.
    That is a worry.

Anyway, it's free and easy to use. I don't use Tor, I use Jondo/Jap which is apparently much more secure, and also free.

To occasionally search heavy sh*t I dont want tracked by 'them', within any vpn shell, with ssl/tls and all addons off in the Jar/JonDoBrowser, I typically search using http://www.proxy-service.de/proxy-service.php?u=https%3A%2F%…
This allows ssl browsing without ssl direct access to your pc.
Any one see a problem with this? Or better methods?

Any one see a problem with this? Or better methods?

Yes, of course it's a problem. The infinitely better method is to use somebody else's computer for dodgy 5h!t.

  • You can't run an operation without keeping at least SOME logs.

    • I am very curious.. as you would expect that legally they have to keep a level of logs.. who would be liable if the IP lawyers went to town.. they client, the vpn, the vps provider.. who cares? lol

      • Not just legally. You can't run a VPN without some internal logs. It just wouldn't work.

        https://www.goldenfrog.com/blog/myths-about-vpn-logging-and-…

        Myth #4
When my VPN provider’s privacy policy says they “don’t log,” that means I am anonymous

Myth #4When a VPN provider simply says they perform “no logging” it does not guarantee online anonymity or privacy. Any systems or network engineer will confirm that some minimal logging is required to properly maintain and optimize systems or the network. In fact, any provider claiming “no logging” should cause you to immediately question what is happening with your private data. If a VPN provider kept absolutely no logs, they wouldn’t be able to:

Offer plans with limits on GB usage or per user basis
Limit VPN connections to 1, 3 or 5 on a per user basis
Troubleshoot your connection or offer support for server-side problems
Handle your DNS requests when using the VPN service. They might rely on a 3rd Party DNS provider that logs DNS requests
Prevent abuse, such as spammers, port scanners and DDOS to protect their VPN service and their users

The logging issue is more complicated than placing a single line in your privacy policy stating “we don’t log” and then advertising your service as “anonymous.” There have been too many instances where user data was turned over by “no log” VPN providers, yet they continue to promise an anonymous service. For example, a “no-logging” VPN provider recently admitted that it used a packet sniffing software to monitor customer traffic to prevent abuse. VPN users should demand more transparency from their VPN providers.

  • any further feedback?

  • I can't comment on logs, privacy etc, as you can't tell with any vpn.
But it works bettter, much easier to use, and is faster I find than Cyberghost and others I use.

Log or no log, I expect this will keep you shielded from network sniffers, including trojans, wi-spies and your isp. Which is important to many people.

No fuss, no ads or bull that I've noticed.

I hope that answers your question. I just use it with a second layer, Jondofox, which creates privacy from the vpn spying (fairly safe, nothings 100%).

  • Thanks for the heads up :)!

Shall have a look at it an report back,so far just from looking at their site it looks like the early froot vpn (https://www.frootvpn.com/) before they went paid, even using their wording, further looking it appears to be a clone of their first site. I would say be an early beta before going paid.

Going through their terms and conditions, couple of things pop out.

    They Don't log, Other then below if you believe them;

"Pegasus VPN does not collect or log any traffic or use of its Virtual Private Network ("VPN")."

"We do not log any user activity (sites visited, DNS lookups, emails etc.). We only log access attempts to our servers (for security and troubleshooting), session durations, bandwidth used and user clicks made to our software (for features popularity tracking and improvements). We do not get involved in any form of censorship. We do not give your personal info to any third parties. We do not cooperate with any requests for information unless we are required to by law. We respect your wish to use the Internet anonymously. "

" Pegasus VPN does not share, sell or rent your personal information with non-affiliated companies or other people apart from providing products or services you've requested for, when you give us permission, or under the following circumstances:

In response to court orders, subpoenas, legal process. To defend against legal claims or establish or exercise our legal rights.
To provide the information to our trusted partners who work on behalf of or with Pegasus VPN under confidentiality agreements."

This however made me wonder; "By using Pegasus VPN, you accept that Pegasus VPN may use a minimal amount of user bandwidth as part of the process in providing the service. Pegasus VPN is provided free of charge and we are not liable for any bandwidth charges that may be incurred, if any."

Have sent an email asking for more information about this and a couple of questions.. Awaiting to hear back, if i do I'll post here though this and provide information to our trusted partners is enough to turn me off them, least till they clarify..

    • So in a few months with luck, we can hop on another freeby vpn. Anyway still working flawlessly, and by running Tor or Jondo on top, they should provide anonymity from one another spying, I am hoping so anyway.
Anyway thanks for your nice note.
