Any deals currently?

In which case, think about it , who is the product?

do you think by paying for it you are not the product?

That's not how it works, the general public after two years they subscribe again at full cost.
OZB just recycles emails.

you mean like ExpressVPN which is owned by Kape Technologies ?
They also own Cyberghost, PIA, Zenmate and Intego. As well as owning some review sites which point towards the above.
Kape seems to be owned by an israeli billionaire. I would expect Israeli intelligence to be involved as well ;)

Spoke like a true Roe Jogan.

Oy surely not..

Then you're the product

tbh i shouldve said, ive never used a vpn, i dont see the point of why everyone is so addicted to them

@mr_asstight: And it will only be a short time before EU, US, CA, NZ and JP also get age verification laws.

@mr_asstight: Haven't heard about this coming out. What's this all about? I assume it's for social media? How is age verification going to affect people that aren't underage? And how is it going to affect VPNs? Is that going to break people's privacy?

@Ice009: It's about:
- all search engines, youtube included, is slated to require age verification to access non-child censored content starting December
- all social media will be illegal if under 16
- same with porn starting in MarchIt affects all users regardless of age. The proposal is, if you want non-child censored content you'll need to age verify.
It doesn't affect VPNs, yet.
I don't know how to answer will it 'break' peoples privacy, since digital privacy is more like a dimmer switch rather than just on/off.
It's obviously pushing the dimmer lower. A direction that has higher safety and liberty risks the further it goes.
@ozilicious: Wow, OK, thanks for giving me a rundown on it. I'd better start looking into this.
What do you think about it? Do you agree with some of it, or disagree with all of it? Yeah, I'm thinking it's not good at all if it's going to affect people's liberty.
When you say all search engines, even the privacy based ones like DuckDuckGo etc.?
Edit : Did a bit of a search now, but doesn't seem like a whole lot of info available right now. Just have to wait and see I guess.

@Ice009: I agree porn and social media can be harmful to children, heck, even some adults.
At the same time, (liberty issues aside) I don't think this law helps either.
I'd rather the money going into this be used to not just educate children, but especially parents on really seeing the range of dangers and also how to effectively protect their kids from them.Yes all search engines, including DDG and other privacy centric ones.

@ozilicious: Yeah, I guess you're right on the social media and porn, that can be very harmful to children.
I like your idea better of educating both children and parents too. I think that would be much more productive use of the money. It really could be a big waste of money. I really don't like the liberty aspect of it, though, as I am pretty against that. I don't know. I need to think about it for a bit. Initial thoughts are, I don't like it.

@ozilicious: Porn and social media are definitely harmful to everyone, just to varying degrees.
The problem is this law is targeting the user instead of the dealer, something we've seen fail in every form of addiction prohibition, yet Governments keep trying.

Oh you have, you just haven't realised it yet.

they are paying you because they want your data

I use the profit from the 130% cashback deals to pay for mullvad

That's a good idea. Although I prefer proton now that mullvad ditched port forwarding. Both get similar speeds for me.

Which is better, Proton or Mullvad from keeping govt prying eyes away?

@Trishool: Hard to say, they're both up there.
I'd estimate at that level it's much more likely to be small user errors over time than the providers that'll leak info.Mullvad is based in the 14 eyes though.

Always wondered who takes the hit in those 110-130% cashbacks deals??

Was actually eyeballing Proton Unlimited (VPN with port forwarding + password manager)… ah well

proton is great with port forwarding. I use Bitwarden for the password manager.
Proton you may be able to get 2 years for 60 USD at Black Friday.

Is self hosting password manager viable / worth it…
Maybe.Don’t overly need a port forwarding, just would be nice to
help torrenting… Just need VPN to stop ISP….
well, you don't have to selfhost bitwarden you can access it via bitwarden.com or selfhost vaultwarden.
I selfhost vaultwarden along with many other services. To add to the vault when not at home I open up a wireguard connection.

@bohn: Any rough guides to how to self host.
Saw this (As I have a DS423+)
https://mariushosting.com/how-to-install-bitwarden-on-your-s…And looks straight forward enough but want to ensure it is private (Alongside my other services (Sonarr Radarr etc) which I access remotely via Tailscale)

@Zuelly: I don't use synology but set it up with docker compose from here https://github.com/dani-garcia/vaultwarden

Proton you may be able to get 2 years for 60 USD at Black Friday.
How did I miss it. Was it posted as a deal here?

I did comment on it once
but this is the deal I got https://www.pcmag.com/deals/early-black-friday-deal-75-perce…worked out to 2 years just under 60 usd
also this was better than the BF deal on the proton website which was weird ;)

Is $108.27 a $US or $A price?

at checkout au price for me is Total for 24 monthsAU$117.36*
Including 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST): AU$10.67
Sorted $108.27 selecting to pay in US dollars
Select USD before you add to cart. Then pay using a card with no international transaction fees and it comes to $108.27 AUD. There shouldn't be any GST or extra tax on top.

Does anyone know how to get this to work if you already have a mail plus subscription?

That is what I dislike about Proton. They won't let you have separate packages like mail plus and vpn plus but push you towards Unlimited.

What if you have the free Proton Mail. It wouldn't affect this deal, does it?
If you have one of the paid for versions of Proton Mail, does this deal not work due to the email address, or do they just not allow separate accounts?

Free or paid Mail doesn't affect this deal, this is for VPN only.
You can have a Mail and a VPN subscription simultaneously, but then it may be better to just get unlimited to get more in the bundle for less money.
@ozilicious: How as i cant add a paid mail to my already existing vpn plus account. It only lets me order Unlimited.

@Spizz: Weird, I haven't done it recently so it's possible they changed something.
You could reach out to support and they'll give you a clear answer if/how it's possible.

Hmmm 🤔 I got a sweet lifetime-like deal 🤝 on proton pass but I don't want a VPN deal to squash it..

@cobknob: You can create another account and can stay signed into multiple accounts for mail and overall account management settings.
VPN you just sign in once and forget about it.

Curious how everyone pays for VPN
If you get cashback it's not an anonymous transaction right
I'm seriously considering ditching PIA because of the big picture.
Wasn't considering proton but this is pretty attractive. Have been looking at Nord
Proton offers Bitcoin as a method of payment: https://proton.me/support/pay-with-bitcoin
VPNs are not guaranteed to keep users completely anonymous anyway, especially from law enforcement and other government agencies: https://ssd.eff.org/module/choosing-vpn-thats-right-you

There's never a guarantee, but as the article states the VPN provider is only subject to laws of the jurisdiction they operate in and Swiss privacy laws for VPN are some of the most private in the world.
Unlike most other countries there's no requirement to keep any data to comply with law enforcement requests.
Swiss privacy laws for VPN are some of the most private in the world.
For now, this may change soon.
https://www.techradar.com/vpn/vpn-privacy-security/is-proton…

@HardQuiz: Yup, there's always a threat. Fortunately, Proton is one of the most proactive companies I've seen at implementing preemptive future proofs and defences.

You can buy Mullvad gift cards from Amazon. If you shred the gift card after you apply it to your account then noone has any way to link it back to you. You do lose any form of receipt/record of you paying but it shouldn't be a problem.

Or just mail cash to the providers that accept it like Mullvad or IVPN. Even more anonymous than having the purchase history be linked to your amazon account.

It's probably not perfect but it's easier than sending cash. I think if they really wanted to track you down they could get you via your IP or something. The gift card adds another layer of anonymity. I don't know how easy it is to track down the gift card that you use. I don't think the majority of users need to worry about it too much. Unless you're doing something seriously shady they probably don't have the time or processing/man power to look into what you are doing.
FWIW Regarding their scratch cards, Mullvad state
The design of the activation code removes the possibility for third parties to link a payment to a Mullvad account, for privacy.

for the 6 times a year i need geographic vpn — still enjoying 2006 lifetime getflix sub for $9

Darn, good deal you got there. I assume you don't use it much. Do you know if Getflix still works with various streaming services pretty well? I assume you're using it for streaming services to access different region's content?

Good on these folks for diversifying their infrastructure in case the Swiss pass their data vacuum surveillance laws.

Why’s is so hard to roll Poland in the free version

I have no idea…
But the US influence over there and the political bullsh#$ might have something to do with it - relayed from family living in the East.

Not sure if that's a spelling error but Proton DOES NOT fall under 5 eyes surveillance. In fact Switzerland has some of the best privacy laws in the world. Unfortunately there has been news coming out of late that some dickhe#$ wants to introduce mass surveillance laws worse than North America.
Luckily Proton is committed to relocating infrastructure to a location where privacy remains a key virtue. If they can not maintain this level or commitment to privacy the Swiss government will literally have signed their death warrant and Proton will be no more. - in saying all this we are approaching an epoch where new encryption software and hardware will be available and the governments will not be able to do a thing about it.

Removed my comment because you’re correct. I think the CEO was under fire for some political views or something but the actual VPN is sound.

The CEO of Proton?
Unfortunately, transitions in businesses of privacy of great affect to customers. Hopefully they maintain their commitments.

@cobknob: Yeah he historically was anti maga, then retweeted something maga, iirc.
It wasn't a business propsition, so its just people upset about someones personal opinion - which admittedly, he should have the common sense not to mix his business account with pleasure, but what'cha gonna do? Can't cure carelessness.

Isn't windscribe better and cheaper?

Isn’t purevpn a literal profit via cashback and NordVPN free?

Is there any good deals on Windscribe, if not now, are they likely to have any come Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales?

Can't seem to stack this onto an existing subscription.

You need to cancel, you'll get prorata credit back.
Then when you purchase this your credits will automatically apply to reduce the price as if you stacked.

Why so many up votes when VPNs are often free here via cashback?
I understand the conspiracy theorists going for this thinking it’s more secure, but not the average ozbargainer
Is there features im not aware of?
I’m not sure with purevpn, but NordVPN is considered quite sound and there’s a lot of trust in their no logging policies

How do "conspiracy theorists" fit in here?

You're a conspiracy theorist if you tell him something he doesn't understand.

This sounds like something a conspiracy theorist would say.

I normally use my VPN to use different regions of streaming services. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking the bigger/more used VPNs have their IPs blocked by some of the streaming services, so my thoughts are something like Proton might not have as many of their IPs blocked/blacklisted?
Can anyone say how Proton performs for streaming geo-restricted content switching to different regions (stuff like HBO Max, Disney+, Amazon Prime etc.)?

They have dedicated servers for streaming. They've always worked perfectly for me.

Smaller VPNs are likely just as bad or even worse as they use generic data centre IPs / servers, which are usually automatically blocked (not even detected as a VPN, just because it's clearly a server not a residential user).
Larger VPN providers use a mix and sometimes it's hard to determine if it's residential, for example PureVPN has servers on Global Secure Layer's ASN (network), while they're not purely only a hosting provider - so they can't be specifically blocked based on that.

Thinking about grabbing this in preparation for the governments mandatory ID checking… Should I?

I saw something similar mentioned in another post. I haven't heard about this until people here started posting about it. Can you explain what's it about?

Does anyone know if this works with BitTorrent SOCKS5 and can saturate a gig connection or come close to it at least?

Wow, thank you for this. Incredible.

you may want to read this: 'a post from Proton's CEO explaining that these weren't "journalists" but hacktivists violating their ToS using their accounts for illegal things. Of course that'll get your account banned on any service that cares about their users, whether you're a journalist or not.'
https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/1ng1apv/clarify…
@Ooops

Worth noting to that ProtonMail being an email service is subject to different laws than VPN.
Proton has no choice but to enforce ToS, because if activities which are illegal under Swiss law, or other activities which are technically not illegal but damaging to Proton (such as sending spam) where not forbidden, Proton would unfortunately become blocked by other email providers, hurting legitimate users.

Any huge discounts for Unlimited?

November sometimes has sales but best is if you can get others to split it then grab a family plan, even sharing with 3 people is substantially cheaper and you can add up to 6.

A banner popped up on the VPN saying there is 50% off for 3 days. Code: SEP25BUNDLESALE

For Unlimited or Plus?

Unlimited

Merged from Proton VPN Plans: 2 Years US$71.76 (~A$108), 1 Year US$43.08 (~A$65.53) @ Proton VPN
Coupon Code: PCMAG_70DEAL
Hey Guys!
Found this coupon for ProtonVPN, and it worked for me
Similar to this deal OzBargain
but this works for the 1-Year Plan as well or for people where the mentioned coupon doesn't work for themHope this helps!
Remember to use a no international fee card if purchasing in USD
I aint buying a VPN unless its got 100% cashback

you wont get that with Proton

Hope you're not using that free VPN for anything privacy related. If you're not paying, you're the product.

Lets say its not privacy, just a bit of eyepatch and parrot behavior.. are the "free" ones (i.e. Nord etc..) ok for that?

in ozb we only use VPNs that pay us 110% cashback
