  • Thanks OP. Looks like it lets the sun in on both sides through those triangle meshes. Check out the 4th pic on SuperCheap.

That seems to be the case….deal breaker anyone?

      • depends, i assume it will cut the intensity of the sun and also lets you see around you if needed. might be a nice compromise between blaring hot and completely shaded (i mean why go to the beach if you want no sun at all?)

        • From experience I often take one of these with me, it's handy if I'm already a bit sunburnt somewhere and want to limit extra exposure, handy to lie down in it and read a book if you want to relax for a while. Good too if you have a family member who hates the beach, but can be convinced to come along if there's even a little bit of shelter from direct sun and sand.

One thing that could be missing from this though, I can't tell from the photos: It's very important to weigh the tent down with sand on windy days, because those little tent-pegs will do nothing if it catches a big gust of wind, especially if anchored in beach sand. Something like this could do a fair bit of damage if it blew into people, cars or onto a roadway. One of my beach shelters (similar to this but a bit more effort to erect) has sand bags you fill to weigh it down. The other is a pop-up and it doesn't hand sand bags, and it can blow away with barely a breeze, so we have to pack all the edges down in sand. If no wind can get under it, it's much less likely to blow away. I don't use them at all if the wind is too high.

EDIT: refreshed the page and a new photo came up - this one does have sand bags at the back, which is great. You might still need to run sand around the front to stop it flapping about though.

      • Yeah, for me it is. :(

Probably required so that wind can blow through the tent rather. Otherwise it would act like a sail and blow you away

        • @antt: I like to be blown away.

what a dealbreaker, how about duct tapes?

I think that's the normal price. I got mines not long ago from BigW for $20, and then later I realized that Bunnings was selling at $18…

Wear a hat and it should be ok. I might get one.

    150 x 150 x 100cm opened size

This is TINY. What can you use it for?

1m tall at the apex (right at front edge) is probably too short for adults to sit under and be shaded.

Might be OK for kiddies, but I thought most sun shelters are larger than this aren't they?

Perfect for making your next beach trip a bit more in-tents!

"Now is the Summer of their Discount Tent"

  • Since this is a pop up, is it difficult to fold back once used?

I have this. I bought it for $15 on offer a few months ago.

You pull the cord to pop it up.
You pull it apart and it falls back down (very easy but watch your fingers). Realistically you can unpeg, pop down and put in a bag in 30 seconds.
It has an outside pocket on either side to fill up with sand to weigh it down.
It is quite low so you could not put a chair in it.
It is idea for 1 person as you can spread out.
It is not good for 2 people as you take a side each and the triangular shape means that you cannot stop the sun hitting you (especially when it is overhead).

We bought it so the wife can nip to the beach and read a book with minimal hassle and it does the job for such a cheap price.
It would be fine for a couple of young kids too as long as the parents are not sharing :(

  • use it in the balcony, anyone?

    • There'd be no padding, so it wouldn't be very comfortable to sit in. Also it might blow away in the breeze if not pegged down.

  • On a different topic, has anyone tried the $15 camping tents from BigW, Target and Harvey Norman etc and have any complaints or preferences?

  • Looks ok. I might get one for the wife unless someone recommends a better one :).

  • I have something similar to the A-shade from here http://www.sacampingcentre.com.au/beach_shelters.htm

The Cool cabanas looks good too.

Both would be better in providing shade than the Ridge Ryder unit. If price reflects the amount of shade, then you get what you pay for.

Hi All, thanks for the comments, questions and suggestions. We were looking for something quick, light and easy as we have a young son and wanted somewhere available for him to get some quick relief from the sun. We were not planning on all huddling around inside it for long periods!

The mesh panels do seem a little annoying, but I am told they are for the wind and most of the other shelters of this type seem to have them as well. I guess an industrious person could duct tape on some flaps of material or something to cover them if they wanted to. Pegs and Sand bags are included, hopefully that's enough to stop it flying away.

I haven't had the chance to take it to the beach yet but I have set it up out side a couple of times and can confirm that it is very quick and easy to put up and take down, much better than assembling those annoying tent poles! The bag is spacious enough that you don't have to fold it up perfectly to pack it away either.

You can certainly get bigger and better options for double and triple the price, maybe bigw and bunnings had similar items before at the same or better price, but I couldn't find them.
