Lol, Jetstar won't be going anywhere soon. It's been Jetstar who keep its parent company floating for quite a while, or we could have seen another case of Ansett already

    • +4

Typically there will be a handful of seats on each flight that are discounted. The remainder will be much higher prices which offsets the cost of the discounted seats.

    • As opposed to empty, unsold seats?

  • +8

fare maybe cheap, but with the AUD value tumbling makes going overseas (especially US) such a pain in the pockets!

  • +4

Not all international routes…no Japan flights are part of the sale :(

    • Thanks :)

    • Gold Coast to Tokyo is in there.

      • Pretty sure Melbourne to Tokyo is too.

        • oops sorry I meant none from Sydney!

        • +1

          @strawberrybug:
          Thats not a direct flight.

        • @Infidel:

Sydney to any of the Japan destinations are not a direct flight? I didn't know that..thanks.

        • It's included … but it's a "normal" Jetstar price for around $750 Melbourne -Tokyo

        • @strawberrybug:
SYdney has to transit at Gold Coast now…

    • +1

Japan flights are listed. Booked my Japan flight in free return flight deal. For me, this sale is twice the price and after Cherry Blossom season I'm going for.

      • Hi Infidel. Japan fares are listed, but they're not part of this particular promotion.

        • +1

Oh. I was just checking the specials to make sure I hadn't paid too much @$249 return ;-)

        • +1

@Infidel: You got yourself a real bargain there :)

        • @Infidel: that's an amazing price, would you mind sharing where & when it's for? I'm so keen to go in august but need to keep my eyes peeled for a sale.

        • @strawberrybug:
Downside - from Cairns - only departure point for dates I wanted (but I can get there cheap). 28/3 for only 4 weeks this trip. Price is currently $249 1-way, but from 10/4 which is when the cherry blossoms would usually have fallen.

Bought in popular September deal. To Osaka for me, but Tokyo was same price; Syd $442 return.

Used iwantthatflight for $200 off Jetstar sale price for 6 weeks holiday just before Christmas 2014. Cost $600 return from Gold Coast, at that busy time.

My first trip was in August years ago - too hot & humid, especially Kyoto. So choose your location & activity with that in mind.

        • @Infidel: ooh thanks for all the info! I need an Ozbargain mentor to ensure I take advantage of the sales in a smart fashion.

      • Same here, waiting for my June flight from Brisbane to Tokyo. Paid $1650 during sale last september for family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids (2 and 5 years old).
Still searching for bargains on final leg of Tokyo-Khabarovsk (Russia) - only 3 hrs direct flight but S7 (siberian airlines) want at least $2500 :(

        • I want to do that same sector. Can I ask why Khabarovsk?

        • @goober:
That's where I came from to Australia back in 2010.
Want to catch up with friends, relatives and do some dental repairs for me and my wife (might pay off whole cost of flights as it way way cheaper in Russia but quality is really good)

        • +1

@Michael1983: Drasviti Tavarish! Ya tozha Khabarovski.

Just bought some flights yesterday through jetstar - what a joke is their buying process! Preying on the lazy, elderly to add on, add on, add on! Disgraceful!

    • +1

that's why they call it budget airline. i believe all budget airlines does the same add on, extra money to pay. nothing new imo

    • +1

Welcome to the world of low-cost-carriers! They're all much the same.

    • +1

It's so much better … only pay for what you need/want.

  • On a sperate note, can anyone who has been to Hawaii comment on how it compares to Bali, Fiji etc for a young family holiday? We have a 4 yr old and 1 hr old..

    • +33

You have a 1hr old and you're OzBargaining? Dedicated.

      • +1

Everything needs to be ozbargained with kids of that age…

      • I'm thinking typo… y and h are very close on the keyboard…

      • LOL, nice one!!

    • +1

Be prepared for the relatively long flight time to Hawaii.

    • We'd been around the world twice as a family before our kid turned 3, travelling with kids is all about your attitude :)

I'd not do Hawaii with small ones (especially while the dollar is so low) - realistically it's Fiji with double the flight time for kids that size :) Don't overlook FNQ for cheaper holidays too…. We've even stayed in a resort with an included Kids Club on the Gold Coast that we could leave the grounds and go out for dinner! Amazing what a night out without having to organise a high chair does :) Yes, these luxuries are available at resorts overseas but they start to add up :)

Congratulations on your 3 hr and 5 minute old :D

    • +1

flight is a slog, but usually has outbound (from Oz) flight at night and inbound (to Oz) during the day…

I think they've changed the times slightly since I went in '14 when you'd leave Australia in the early PM, but arrive in Honolulu in the WAY early AM, so you'd have to wait around to check into your hotel…

Plenty to do, some of it is on the cheap, other stuff can be a bit pricey, things like the Movie Site tours at kualoa ranch and Luau's can run a couple of hundred for a family, so keep that in mind with the rubbish dollar.

You can still see a lot with a cheap car hire deal (look online for specials with the US rental mobs)

Parking in Waikiki is a nightmare, so keep that in mind when hiring a car, if you stay in town, your accommodation likely won't include a car space.

    • I'd wait till your hrs old becomes a couple yrs old before going to Hawaii. Really needs more than one visit (or a fairly long stay), if you want to explore what the other islands has to offer. In any case you need to plan for it (eg. best season, accomm, car, activities, etc). Winging it, especially with youngsters = nightmare + requires very fat wallet! Made that mistake years ago with my wife, during peak season!

Fiji can also become quite expensive. Some resorts do have kids minding services but as somebody mentioned here it will add up to costs. Plus <1 yr old requires 24/7 care. Even grocery shopping for the bub is quite limited in Fiji so make sure you have your supplies. A bit hard to appreciate everything Fiji has to offer while babysitting, unless your intention is to beach or resort bum.

Bali is the cheapest of the two destination. It can be a family friendly destination! Only annoying things are traffic, mosquitos and wild Bogans!!!! Great idea hiring a car with a driver to take you places but take note you'll probably need to bring your own car/capsule seats.

As somebody else here mentioned, have you discovered what QLD has to offer? Might be less stressful with a bub.

      • +2

HAHA - just noticed what everyone is going on about…Yes, the H and Y keys are too close together. Not sure if my wife would forgive me for bargain hunting when the little man was 1hr old…

use this to get to hawaii, then dometic flight with qantas points to seattle, and then bus it to canada,

    • lol really?

      • Eh?

        • +1

          whats confusing here

        • @unclesnake: Nothing I just want to know if you are really doing this or trolling.

        • @Duram: i was referring to altomic?
what does trolling mean? i am not doing this, im just giving it as a suggestion, to get to canada for what looks like $458 + 50k of wantas points, and what ever a bus ride costs…

        • @unclesnake: canadese questioning.

        • @altomic: also geordie for "im ******* confused" ok no worries

        • @unclesnake: "Eh?" is a sterotypical Canadian phrase. My guess is he's having a laugh.

    • good idea!

    • Deleted again = Sorry.

Might as well fly from Hawaii to Vancouver (with a stopover in Seattle) on 1 ticket using Qantas points, just tried it on the Qantas website and the price is exactly the same. The only additional cost would be luggage fee for two flights instead of one.

      • didnt know you could do it! you would have to pay international airport tax i would have thought

      • extra $67 in tax, but actually better off anyway, for the sake of a 5 hour bus right

        • Just for future reference, where do you get the extra tax from? I went up to the page where I confirm the flight and all it says was USD 5.6 for the fuel surcharge (normally that's in the hundreds, so it is more than possible I missed something in the process).

        • @glassyan: 5.60 is for domestic flight, extra 60 or so be canadian taxes… i just went through qantas, and it cam up with a total of 67

if u found it for 5.60 to vancouver id be keen to see for myself

        • @unclesnake: Very strange, I tried again on the qantas website with AS852 (Honolulu to Seattle) and AS2266 (Seattle to Vancouver) on one ticket, it still shows $5.60 USD + 28,000 PTS in the system.

Do you have PM enabled? Can send you a screenshot, keen to know what I missed.

To be fair, this is only an academic exercise. You can pay ~250-300 and fly from Honolulu to Vancouver outright, I would rather pay a revenue ticket for a non-stop flight and earn FF points rather than redeeming FF points at 1c per point for a 1 stop flight. (Unless you intentionally wanted a stopover)

        • +1

@glassyan: i did return ticket so must be depature tsx from canada… try return or one way from canada .. i dont have enuf points to proceed i used a friends login this morning

        • @unclesnake: ftr i am not associated with jetstar

        • +1

@unclesnake: Bingo, it is the departure tax for Canada, mystery solved :)

So I guess the ultimate ozbargain way is to fly into Canada and leave Canada via bus? Anyone dare to try that and post their results? :p

        • @glassyan: spot on… ithanks for pointing that out

        • @glassyan: thinking i might do this in 2 years or so… wife put me on a flight ban for the moment

      • ..or with a stopover to Portland for tax free shopping :)

        • good idea, stock on p*ss before a canadian road trip

  • Does going on Jetstar give Qantas Status credit?

  • I've been planning a trip to Hawaii for months, and had been planning to fly with Hawaiian, taking a bike with me. However it seems hard to pass up at this price - to fly Virgin/Hawaiian I'll need to fly MEL-SYD-HNL-ITO, around $1350ish return, and then I get Virgin status credits and frequent flyer points which is the big deal. The HNL-ITO portion makes up about $280 of that - but since I'd be booking with Hawaiian rather than Virgin (Virgin is twice as much) I don't get any velocity benefits (extra baggage etc).

So total for Jetstar flights is $780, or $640 if I don't take the package thing (none of the meals look appealing in the slightest).
For the sake of $500 should I just wear the fact that I'll miss out on ~100 status credits and fly with Jetstar direct from Melbourne?

    • what will you get in return with your 'status'?

        • +3

only extra qantas points and lounge access? not worth the extra money i spend to get that delusional 'privileged status', unless your company pays for your travel. i know they call you by name in business class, you get free muffins and coffee in lounge, but still it doesn't mean a lot imo.

with that extra $$$ i can get someone to massage me as well;)

        • @brongz:

Think it's the fact you get priority boarding and additional baggage, lounge access that makes flying that much more enjoyable to some.

        • +2

@nightelves: haha, priority boarding. you'll fly at the same time as other passengers

        • +1

@brongz: I love when they open the gates and everyone rushes / lines up as if getting on first takes you there faster.

I usually wait until there is no one in line before boarding.

        • @Duram: that's what i always do. just sitting until the line getting shorter

      • +1

Status credits are what you need to effectively keep your membership level - rewards points just let you redeem stuff (flights, upgrades etc).
So to remain Silver you need 200/year, Gold it's 500/year.
For Silver it means I automatically get 2 checked bags at no extra cost on all VA flights.
Downside, I miss out on about 18-20,000 frequent flyer points (miles plus bonus plus credit card), which is about the cost of two trips to Sydney.

It looks like booking business return from HNL-ITO gets me 40 status creds each way (vs 10 each way for eco) and only costs AUD130 more - and it's already going to cost USD60 each way for checked baggage, so I'm better off just booking business class HI domestic. That'll give me enough to remain Silver for the next 12mo.

        So overall it's looking like:
$938 total to fly with Jetstar
$1554 to fly with Hawaiian, but I also get 15,000 FF points and another 100SCs, and could reduce that to 1338 if I use points to buy the MEL-SYD leg.

        Hmmm.

        • It's not just the points and SC's, it's the space and service with a full carrier like Hawaiian.

Travelled back on the new Jetstar Dreamliners from Bangkok 2 weeks ago…all I can say is cramped. Worse than their old A330s. Apparently they squeezed in an odd 30 or so extra seats than even Scoot did to their dreamliners (pitch is 20-21 inches now in economy). It was a crappy experience, even Air Asia is better.

I'll avoid Jetstar now unless I absolutely need to and have no choice. For an extra $400 I'd go with Hawaiian.

        • @thargelios:
Thanks for that info. Yeah, having factored in everything I think I'm just going to use my existing points to book MEL-SYD, and wear the extra $400 and go with Hawaiian. Means I'll have to spend a bit of extra time at Sydney airport too, but oh well.

    • That should've been in reply to akashra … not sure how I misplaced it:

Well, I guess the answer is whether you are so close to the next status level that 100 points and spending $500 is worth to you. If not, I'd suggest that you save the 500.

  • Some deals look ok, but I remember last time when I was booking for Japan, all the added costs of baggage, tax, and credit card fees, made it not a deal anymore and I ended up flying with cathay.

    • baggage, tax, and credit card fees
I've never paid those extra charges on my many Jetstar flights to Japan, for many years ;-)

I travel 4-10 weeks with just carry on (including hiking & camping gear, at least when allowance was 10kg). Paid by the free options And take pot luck with seats (single traveller) usually getting better seats to myself.

Trip in March is $249 return. No extra charges. I've flown Cathay to Hong Kong when I was offered free return tickets. I'm frugal, and love travel.

  • anyone having issues on the sale page not properly loading?

  • All the flights is one way which doesn't really work out that cheap !

    • Compared to historical prices it's not bad, especially considering it's a 10 hour flight to and from an expensive country. But it's definitely not spur of the moment prices.

Hawaii is crazy expensive now with our low dollar. Formerly $30 AUD "budget hostels" now cost us $45 - and that's the lower end of prices. Naturally, Airbnbs are expensive too.

  • what's a good price for return to christchurch from sydney?

  • Thanks TA, return to Bali over Easter for $356!

  • Thanks Op, off to Auckland for a wedding in April.

  • Any recommendations for hotels in/around Bali for us (4 Adults, 1 Child, 1 Infant) in start of June ?

  • -2

It's winter now in Hawaii, enjoy swimming LOL

    • You do realise travel is through to June for Bris/Melb?

    • +1

24 and sunny with awesome surf! whats not to like?

  • Ive flown the brisbane - honolulu route 3 times now.. Never an issue with flights etc, always left on time.

My only advice is fill up an ipad with plenty of content, flight is long without any entertainment

  • Just booked Hawaii in the Easter long weekend
    Not bad for the price

    Hubby and I are excited

  • Gold coast to Nadi (Fiji) is cheaper than their normal sale fare ($129 instead of $149). Don't think I've seen it this low before.

  • Jetstar refused to price beat on DPS - MEL with Tiger Airways as they (Jetstar) have the currency as IDR and Tiger as AUD and it has to be the same currency. I find this very dodgy since Jetstar is the one who won't list it as AUD even though I'm buying it from Australia.

  • Be very careful with Jetstar!

I booked a domestic return flight with Jetstar at last promotion. Turned out both flight been cancelled. Since it was promotion, most of the flights at close by dates are already full, you either have to call them for refund(they won't refund unless you tell them to, and there had been some nasty experience such as cut off the line or purposely avoid you from online chatting), or accept a date possibly far away from your expected date, then you have to buy another airline's ticket for a much higher price.

  • Thanks! Quick trip to Thailand booked :)
