Damn that's insane. Just got back from my trip in August when Jetstar had the Japan sale and that flight was $550 return from Melb which was already a steal. But this..dayum.

    • +1

I just got back as well, but I flew PR (from MNL) to Tokyo. This really makes me wanna go back!

    • +1

Returned from Osaka to Cairns last week and plane was 30% full. Rows 10 to 15 were only me with wife and 2 kids and another family couple.
So everyone got 3seats row for a nap. Thanks Jetstar for such an opportunity to fly cheap cheap cheap.
      :)

    • how much did you spend on accommodation?

      • +2

We were in japan for a total of 22 days, accommodation was mostly a mix of hostels and airbnb. Total approx. $1000~ or roughly $45~ a night.

        • damn that is cheap!

        • Me and a friend are going to japan from november 23-december 2. Do you think we need to book hotels or should we just pay for them there?

        • @voolish:

book what you can now, im there similar dates, its very busy.

        • @voolish:

What Onit said. We booked all accommodation and left Tokyo for last (huge mistake!). We ended up staying at a capsule hotel (Green Plaza Capsule Hotel in Shinjuku, horrendous check-in and check-out system) for 4 nights straight when capsule should really only be a 1 night experience and it had a communal bath which may or may not be uncomfortable for some people (lol!). During those 4 nights we scrambled to find an available airbnb accommodation and luckily we did in the end for the rest of the trip.

tl;dr Definitely try and book all your accommodation before you go, especially Tokyo as the city is the most dense with tourism and available accommodation can get hard to find.

        • @Onijho: finding it very hard to find decent value and good quality hotels in Tokyo for November. Think I will go airbnb instead.

        • @Onijho:

What exactly is a communal bath? Does everyone walk/swim around with their "junk" exposed?

        • @Son ofa Zombie:

Yeah pretty much. Just one giant bathroom.

      • $0 for staying 2 nights in Westin Osaka deluxe suite and $0 for staying 10 days in house at kojima village 200 km south from Osaka. Thanks to my wife's sister husband. He is local guy so he was a nice host for us :)

        • +1

Ah, my long lost friend ;-)
Lucky you. Japanese are usually so generous.

  • Alrighty, what time to go?

  • This seems like a good deal.
    Dont know anything about travel!

  • +1

Already booked a flight to Bangkok for $800…. ARGHHHHHHH

  • May or may not have just put some flights on hold… too good to resist $850 return for 2 adults and an infant. Thanks OP!

    • -1

Why does your infant need to travel to Japan?

      • my parents took me to tokyo disneyland when i was 6 months old.
        apparently i loved it, when i wasn't sleeping :)
        shrug

        • We took our 4mth old to Ireland… but that was for the inlaws etc.

        • @Utopian:
For family reasons, I totally understand.

      • Because leaving the infant at home when the parents go to Japan would probably not be considered favourably by Family and Community Services?

        • -8

          So don't travel unnecessarily.

Why expose a baby to all the germs at an airport, plane and foreign country for no reason? Not to mention annoying all other passengers.

        • +3

@PainToad: I'm guessing you don't have kids PainToad?

  • Wicked. I was waiting on another Jetstar sale to Japan, but I wasn't expecting flights this cheap!

Grabbed one. Should be able to wangle some time off by April, I reckon. Too good a price not to give it a shot.

    Thanks for the heads up!

  • Is a week in Tokyo alone enough?

    • +16

It's better than a week back home :)

    • +2

      Yes for this price

    • +3

1 week will give you a great first time experience, you won't even need to leave Tokyo.

You'll definitely want to go back afterwards!

    • +7

You could spend several weeks in Tokyo easily without getting bored. Especially if you're into food.. lordy it's damn near impossible to eat badly in Japan.

    • It depends on what you want to do but a week there is fine.

  • +2

how much would $1000 or $2000 last you in japan

    • +32

Depends if it lands on red or black.

    • +9

Depends if that includes accommodation, and what you're looking for (5star hotels? solo traveller?). If you're backpacking or even sofa surfing it will be plenty. You should be able to get by with $20/day on food if you don't each much, but depends on your normal diet. Some hotels offer free breakfast. Train fare will be about $5/day. Maybe put aside $20/day for attractions but a lot of sightseeing spots are free or very cheap. People watching and window shopping in Akihabara and Harajuku is fun and will take a whole day each. If you can, try and schedule it so you're in Tokyo on a Sunday, it gets crazy :)

So if you say $50/day for day-to-day stuff and ~$100/day on accommodation you'll have plenty of spending money left over from $2000 for a week trip.

      • +1

$1000 per week!? Woah, thank you for the very good informative information

      • +1

To go really budget you could stay at capsule hotels & buy bento boxes from convenience stores like 7-11, Lawson, Family Mart. I have to say you wouldn't really be fully experiencing the essence of Japan or doing it justice if you go too stinge.

        • +3

As a proper OZBargainer you should avoid 7-11 or similar convenience stores and head directly to the basements of shopping malls, where you can find big grocery shops. Bento boxes, sashimi and nigiri sushi sets are much cheaper, especially if you do shopping in the evening and they discount them to 30 or even 60%
Beer and drinks are also way more cheaper in big grocery stores

    • You can get great AirBNB apartments in the centre of various cities for about $100-$120/night easy.

Grab some breakfast stuff from a nearby supermarket, so that is one meal a day sorted. You can get convenience store meals that are completely edible for $7 if you want and then get a nice dinner.

Transport is super cheap. You can totally do it. Just don't have top shelf wagyu beef and sashimi every day and you will be fine.

I am currently in Kobe in an amazing apartment for $120/night and will be in the heaet of Osaka next week for $100/night.

Get a place that offers a bicycle and that is even more you can save/explore.

ETA: as above, go to food halls in major department stores for good lunch and din er boxes. Conbeni at a pinch and they are everywhere. And Lawson fried chicken is good ;)

  • I just book tickets on Tuesday!!! Phew, the says return before 20th December, we're coming back later than that so the deal wouldn't have applied, and we still got the out going tickets at the same price

  • -3

WHY OH WHY Melbourne does not have 25 Mar - 3rd Apr while GC & Cairns have???

  • Does the Tokyo flight arrive in Haneda or Narita?

    • +3

Jetstar only fly out of Narita, in the new budget terminal there.

      • +1

Its a pretty barebones terminal. More like a shed with walls.

        • Yep, with quite a long walk outdoors to get there. Can be a less than pleasant experience in the colder or hotter months dragging your luggage on the 'running track'.

  • +8

Thanks so much OP!!! Dates fell nicely with my anniversary. $1,093 return for 2 Adults with meals, extra baggage and whatnot. Now time to tell the wife we're spending 3 weeks in Japan for her birthday and our anniversary.

    • +2

      Yatta!!

      • +2

        Sugoi!!

    • Me too! Booked for my family - 2 adults 2 kids! Thanks OP!

  • Good deal.

Anyone know of a good hack to pay using credit card without the $25 per passenger booking fees?

    • +1

Pay by Poli. This option is available on payment page.

      • +2

I just paid by bank transfer. They hold your booking for 48 hours for the money to come in so the couple of minutes it took to do were definitely worth the $50

      • Thanks but I want to get the complimentary travel insurance when paying using credit card. Poli doesn't have credit card option.

        • +6

check your credit card t&c, sometimes you don't have to buy the airfare for the travel insurance to kick in……..eg. you can pay accommodation

        • +1

          @Ceceilia:

          Thanks for the pointer.

Seems like Bankwest provides complimentary travel insurance if we use the Bankwest Platinum Credit Card to pay for accommodation.

    • Buy vouchers using your credit card but it could take a few hours to get the vouchers b email and by then the sale fares could be gone.

    • last hawaii deal ($427 return from Bris) i used bank transfer. 4 tickets fees * $X a pop = $expensive

  • +11

Thanks op. Great deal. Woke up not wanting/needing to go to Japan next year but am now going to Japan next year.

  • +3

Do I book now and hope I can take leave….. The temptation is so so strong.

    • Im in the same boat as you… :(

      • I'll literally be a year into work and would have just taken a 3 week trip in December haha. So torn!

      • +1

Booked! Now I have 48 hours to decide if I want to cough up the cash haha. Gotta love spontaneous trips.

    • +1

My motto is it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission…
Booked a winter trip for a family of 3 to Osaka without the boss knowing…
      He will…

      • +1

Nice. I booked mine during my birthday so I'll play that card. :D

      • Assuming forgiveness is given. I've had both experiences.

  • And I just took up the Qantas Hong Kong offer! This is incredibly tempting.

  • +1

    amazing deal…., must resist!

  • Thanks OP :)

  • Lock in exchange rate with Travel card etc. You may find Aussie dollar drop to 60US cents before you reach Japan.

    • Thanks,15 seconds before me heh. How do I get a travellers car is that the same as travellers cheque?

      • +1

All big bank have traveller card. It is like a debit visa or master card with option to load different currency. Even Qantas has one called Qantas Cash Card. Check it out. AUD can only go down from here.

        • I think you misread my question, I asked about a travellers car and not card… :D I'm only fooling around, still excited for some reason, thanks for the tip will look into it after work today. Hopefully bankwest has some good news for me.

  • +5

Literally no self control, just booked my first flight to Tokyo, so many questions now, but most important is what's the best way to exchange money? Been searching all morning, people are saying withdraw miney at 711s, some swear by travellers cheques and some say exchange at post office in the narita airport. Its taken a bit of shine off in the adrenalin of booking but can anyone link me to something good and straightforward?

    Very much appreciated!

    • +3

post offices have international ATMs. as do 7-11s.

get a citibank card for fee free withdrawals.

don't take travellers cheques. Japan is mostly a cash economy.

source : I lived there for 4 years.

      • +1

I went there a couple of months ago and was astonished by the prevalence of the cash economy - I'd have thought Japan would be the first country with paywave, etc, but my experience was >90% cash transactions.

      • Dunno if I can get a Citibank card never tried, will look at all the options, was a but worried about the comment saying dollars going down but Citibank's good for back up in such a case it doesn't.

    • ATM when you get there.

    • +3

the best is Citibank (with Citibank plus debit card). otherwise, JP Post (post office) and 7/11 (7/11's have had issues accepting Mastercard (Maestro, etc) cards, so they may not work).

from memory, JP Post limits your withdrawals to 30-40k yen, whereas Citibank allows you to withdraw substantially more (up to your limit, i think).

source: was there two years ago.

    • +2

Book first, ask questions later! YOLO!

    • +1

Citibank Card. There's 7eleven ATMs near the check in counter and Lawsons at Narita in Terminal 3 (where you'll land).

    • I just took a Travel Money card and withdrew money in chunks at 7/11s. Pretty much everything's cash so this worked out well for me.

    • Depends, but I always exchange money in Australia and use my Master Card for large purchases (hotels, hire car, new iPhone). I've never run out of cash, last year I came home with some Yen, but that's fine, I can spend it this year.

I exchange money online using Auspost and Travelex. They don't charge commission and offer good exchange rates if ordered online. They do charge Credit Card fees though, and you can't pay with cash afaik.

I've had opposite experience with using my Credit Card in Japan. Most stores I've been to accept it without question. Just look for the Master Card/Visa stickers at the checkout or at the front of the store. Chemists, department stores, even convenience stores accept Credit Cards these days. It might help if you can speaker a bit of Japanese like, "caado ii desu ka?"

BUT, some places you expect to accept Credit Cards will not, the main one that comes to mind is Japan Rail Ticket Machines. And check with your hotel, some only accept cash.

    • Returned a week ago from Osaka.
All money I used I took from seven bank ATM, so they are located standing alone in shopping malls or you can find them in 7-11 stores. I took 50,000 yen per transaction using my debit mastercard issued by westpac. There is $5 fee for international transaction, but exchange course much better that travelex or other currency shops. Maximum amount you can take per transaction is 100,000 yen if I remember that right.
I'd recommend to set up Suica or similar transport card and put that cash on it, as the coins are so annoying and heavy in Japan. You can use that card to buy groceries, or drinks from dispenser machines, or use for travel.

      • +1

Transaction fee of ING is $2.5. Citibank card is $0.

  • +2

awesome. kids late for school as I had to buy tickets for June/July 2016- $1300 for the 4 of us. the price is insane. I bought a 1 way ticket (melb-narita) for that amount 12 years ago.

  • Do their $90 bundles work out good value? Or better off booking with added baggage/seat selection separately?

    • +1

each to their own. personally I don't spring for them. the bonus is that everyone has a luggage allowance but how much luggage is your party taking?

I do the supersaver deal - there are 4 of us so $90 * 4 = one additional plane ticket!!!. I allocate seats separately (3 kids so need to sit together) + 1 20kgs bag going there and 1 bag 25kgs coming back -extra 5kgs for souvenirs. I'm going in summer so it's tshirts and shorts. (and a set of "just in case the weather becomes cool" which is worn on the plane anyway). kids each have a carry on backpack with their stuff.

it's only 9 hours OOL -NAR and a night flight. so pack food. and on the way back - bento lunch boxes!!! sugoii.

  • nothing in April for SYD-JAO :(

  • +2

    Wow!…even during Cherry Blossom season!
Btw, it says starting 11th April from Melbourne but i did a test and i could go back further and still get the return for free.

    • Changed the test and just said "Fvck it!" 16 days in April/May! Might be able to catch the back end of the Nagoya Sumo!

  • +6

I'm in. Looks like its going to be OZB meet in Tokyo.

  • wow after Apr you guys are in for summer there! Hot and humid!

  • It says that if you dont prepay baggage it costs more to pay for baggage after booking. Does anyone who much extra is it for baggage after booking but before your flight?

    • With my last Jetstar booking, it was roughly double 5 mins after I paid and thought I better book some luggage now. It's not like Airasia where the price is the same until just before your flight. YMMV.

      • +1

I'm trying to decide whether to spend the extra $90 for baggage, I'm expecting to be buying a lot of crap when i'm over there.

        • can you book one baggage when two of you will be traveling? It does not seem to offer that option like AirAsia.

        • +1

@kolorijo: If you don't choose the bundle, I think there's an option afterwards to select baggage per passenger, which is $35 for 20kg.
