  • do you think this will be the best offer during summer to San Fran from Melb? unlikely to get to 850 surely! Any advantage to go with Qantas rather than airNZ? (in this case from melbourne)

    • +3

Having done the AirNZ route (from SYD to LAX), unless you REALLY want to see Auckland airport I would fly direct regardless of the $100 :)
You'll either have on time flights and have to sit around for 1-3 hours, OR your flight will be late so you'll have the joy of rushing to the next terminal for your connecting flight

Total reduction in flight time alone is worth paying more than $80

      • +1

Ive done the Sydney stopover and all we had to do was get off the flight then back on the same plane… unlucky for you. Also done the NZ stopover and am doing Qantas this May for $930.

        • +1

yeah, it was a pain but for when I booked/traveled the difference between direct (e.g. Qantas etc) or AirNZ was way more than $80 so justifiable for my ozbargain-ness

        • @SBOB: not the worst stopover… and AirNZ is a fantastic carrier.

        • @BeRad:

and AirNZ is a fantastic carrier.

true… but I could do without their 3-4-3 configuration on the AUK-LAX route.. that was cramped

        • @SBOB: if you liked 3-4-3, then you've love 3-5-3

    • +2

from melbourne i can recommend the airnz route, sydney airport is a royal pain in the ass to change flights (you'll be domestic to sydney, then have to change between the 2 airport terminals in sydney and clear customs etc there)
if you can get direct from MEL-LAX (or SFO) then by all means that'd be the best option, but if you have to do a stopover somewhere i'd be trying to avoid sydney :P

some of the US based carriers like United leave MEL as an international flight so the stopover in SYD isn't so painful, but swapping from domestic to international & vice versa at Sydney is something i'd highly recommend avoiding.

edit: both qantas and united seem to do direct MEL-LAX (if you were keen on LAX rather than SFO) direct for <$1100 which is not too shabby

      • +5

If I had to do a stop over I'd take SYD over LAX.

        • +2

          oh shit yeah, definitely :D

auckland's a pretty good spot though, cause you'll be on an international to international flight so no customs etc to clear (just a quick x-ray) and no luggage to clear & re-check. airport's not too huge, and it's a good 3 hours from melb so it's a little further into the journey to break the longer leg of the flight up.

      • SYD isn't that bad - I know the bus is a mild inconvenience but I did CBR-WLG the other week and I was on the other side of immigration within 30 minutes.

        • took me a minute to realise WLG wasn't woollongong.. i was very confused ;D
i'm probably a little biased, ive only done the sydney transfer once and it was on the way home from the US. the queues were monsterous, it took nearly 2 hours to get to the domestic check-in desk from when we landed at the international side, arguments with staff over having to pay for extra luggage fees to get between terminals (i politely told them to go f*** themselves) - we missed our connecting flight (though were put on the next one so not so bad)… we were meant to be direct LAX-MEL but virgin overbooked it and offered to put us in premium economy from LAX-SYD which was nice, in hindsight should've declined the offer, or at least organised for business class on the domestic leg as well.. hence my anger at them wanting to charge me to transfer between the airports when they're the ones that put me in that position :| (and then not being able to get a coke on the domestic flight without paying for it didn't go down well either!)

on the plus side i collected the extra points from being in premium, which just tipped me into platinum :D (and as such, having a gold or platinum virgin card, air nz being the partner airline makes the airnz/auckland routes to the states quite comfy!)

        • @jaybo: the perils of business class people travelling in economy 😱

        • @muncan: the only time i fly business class is when i get free upgrades unfortunately (once from launceston to melb, once from melb to adelaide… in 4 years) - it's all economy schlepping for me, just lots of it!

    • do you think this will be the best offer during summer to San Fran from Melb?

Yep, unless you're a student or under 26, in which case STA Travel generally has cheaper fares. Last year in July my girlfriend booked a Virgin Australia MEL-SFO roundtrip flight via STA Travel for $800, whereas it was $1400+ directly through Virgin Australia.

  • SYD to SFO via AKL is showing $968 with Virgin, Delta and UA showing similiar prices to Qantas. Whatever is your preference!

@galaxys2: ok try look at work today

  • That is the cheapest you will get with Qantas to SF, would definitely recommend flying with them to the USA.

  • Unfortunately not all the way through those dates. Excludes school holidays again.

    • Common for airlines to put school holiday on peak season and charge premium.

  • Hey Rep
When does this QANTAS sale end?

    • Jan 26th on the Qantas site. However, the prices listed here are cheaper than on the Qantas site, so I don't know when those prices will finish up.

      • Thanks for the fast reply.

  • 3 weeks later for burning man please?

  • Good prices for peak times over there. I was looking at booking some flights but what you save in airfare costs you get absolutely hammered in accommodation, especially in San Fran. So expensive.

    • depends on where in SF you stay and how 'fancy' you want it to be..
there are some 'affordable' options if you can stand not staying 5*.
e.g. I stayed at the Columbus Motor Inn in March and it was great for the price. Dated building/rooms but perfectly fine for a place to stay, with parking (amazing for SF, where you dont need a car but we had one as we started there before driving elsewhere and was cheaper to hire the car for a few more days than deal with taxis from the airport) and walking distance to plenty of places and a cable car stop at the door

    • you get absolutely hammered in accommodation

That's true for people that live in San Francisco too :D

I've been living in the Bay Area since 2013. Rent is so expensive here.

  • Arr: 19/Apr/2016 18:30 AKL Auckland, New Zealand
Dep: 19/Apr/2016 19:35 AKL Auckland, New Zealand

    One hour between the flights.
    Isn't it too tight ?
When I fly with Chinese airlines I normally have at least 6 hours between flights.
I do not want to say that Chinese airlines are bad but the fact is that they normally do not consider a 3 or 4 hour delay as a real problem.
So, I do not mind flying with them but prefer to have a bit longer connection time.

How is Air New Zealand in that sense ?

    • if AirNZ sell themas a single flight and let you book it then its fine. Its their 'responsibility' to ensure you make your connecting flight
if you buy them as separate tickets, you are on your own :)

      • Which doesn't mean they will hold the connecting flight. They can just rebook you on one a day later.

      • Then it is probably OK.

    • airnz would be a tad more organised than air china…

    • I've flown MEL to SFO via AKL with Air New Zealand several times now. 1.5 hours is totally fine for the transfer in Auckland. You don't need to go to a different terminal, you just go through a small security/xray section for transfers. It's normally pretty quick. Honestly I think even 1 hour would be sufficient in Auckland.

    • I'll say it then - at least when it comes to delays, Chinese airlines and airports are absolutely terrible.

1 hour to transfer between flights when you don't have to clear immigration (because it's intl -> intl) is fine.

  • Can someone tell me how to book a stopover in Auckland if flying with AirNZ? Trying to book some time in Jun MEL<->SFO and stopover in Auckland on return.

    • Good question.

    • Try using our multicity/layover page:
      http://iwantthatflight.com.au/MultiCity.aspx

Adding a layover generally increases the prices a fair bit, unfortunately.

      • For Australia to USA or vice versa, Air New Zealand generally have one free stopover in Auckland, or +$150-200 for a stopover in other major NZ cities. The best way to check is to either do a multi-city search on Air New Zealand's site, or look at the fare rules. Easiest way I've seen of looking at the fare rules is by searching for the flight on ITA Matrix. For example, this is from the rules for a random Melbourne to SFO Air New Zealand flight I just looked up:

        Category 8: Stopover restrictions
2 FREE STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT IN LAX/SFO/
        AKL/CHC/WLG/ZQN/YVR/HOU.
AND - 2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT IN LAX/
        SFO/YVR/AKL/WLG/CHC/ZQN AT AUD 150.00 EACH.

    • Use the multi-stop search on Air New Zealand's site. Here's an example itinerary: Melbourne to San Francisco 6th June, San Francisco to Auckland 26th June, Auckland to Melbourne 30th June for AU$1046: http://ss.dan.cx/2016/01/14-19.38.48.png

The multi-stop search doesn't allow searching by "flexible dates" (ie. searching 3 days before and after your selected dates) so it's usually useful to do a normal round-trip search to find dates with the cheapest flights, then plug those dates into the multi-stop search. Google Flights also does multi-stop searches, but sometimes the prices are wrong.

      • Wow, thanks a lot. It really helped. I found MEL-SFO-AUCK-MEL at less than $1000 in June. Now I need to talk to my boss..

  • Thanks again IWTF. This time from Ubud

I love it! Thanks heaps (again) for posting this. It made my day.

  • Too late, I wanted to fly to US ealier this week but now it's over. The $2.2 billion prize has been taken out by Californian.

  • I want fly with Qantas directly from Sydney to SFO on 10 Sep and return 18 Sep, but the price is more than $2000.

  • Question guys,

I'm looking for fares from Adelaide to Toronto. I have seen deals that are with different airlines: ADL-MEL with Qantas, MEL-LAX with United and LAX-YYZ with Air Canada.

Knowing that these 3 airlines are in different alliances, will I still have my tickets valid if I miss a connecting flight because of a delay not from my part?

    • +1

will I still have my tickets valid if I miss a connecting flight because of a delay not from my part?

If they're three separate bookings, then most likely not. IMO it's usually not worth risking it unless the price difference is significant and you can have a long layover as buffer time in case one of the flights is delayed (at least 4-5 hours). Sometimes the airlines are willing to accommodate by putting you on a later flight, but that's just a goodwill gesture. Don't count on it as it doesn't happen every time and they're under no obligation to do anything in that case.

If they're codeshare flights (ie. you book all on one ticket and there's a Qantas flight number for all three) then the airline can see your entire itinerary and it's fine. I don't think that's possible in the exact case you mentioned, since Qantas don't partner with United (their partner in the USA is American Airlines). Qantas do partner with Air Canada though.

Basically, pretty much anything you find on a flight search engine such as Google Flights should be fine, but if you piece together your own itinerary with multiple different bookings, you're on your own.

What dates are you looking at, and what prices are you seeing?

      • Hi Daniel, thanks for your reply, I'm looking for traveling on 12 July and coming back on 17 July 2016. It is a short trip to sit an exam in Toronto for the weekend.

I'm seeing about $2004 with no partner airlines in IWTF through expedia for example. I was in Toronto for Christmas and went with Cathay Pacific for $1800 but I doubt I'm going to see that price anytime soon. Cathay have them for $2350 and up.

  • Rep…Is it possible to book a flight going into SFO and coming back from LAX? cheers

    • I'm not the Rep/OP, but that's possible! Just use a flight search site that allows multi-city bookings. Here's an example itinerary with MEL to SFO for the inbound leg and LAX to MEL as the return leg: http://goo.gl/flights/ttZh (screenshot: http://ss.dan.cx/2016/01/18-20.29.17.png). It costs the same amount as MEL to SFO round-trip for the same dates.

  • Similar prices to Los Angeles if you check Qantas website as this special is to both LAX and SFO

    https://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/home/au/en

  • what would be the cheapest to find a mel-london return during march-april? what are the usual prices?
