  • I bought a wireless one of these at JB Hifi last week for $112, needs no installation whatsoever. It has a 2.8" screen which is more than adequate. These are handy for people with boats and trailers, it is a big help using these to hitch up tow bars.

I'm using it as a shop monitor, not in the car. I think people who need reversing cameras to park their car should never have been given driving licenses in the first place. Three people who drove into me in car parks recently (BMW, Lexus and Mercedes) all had reversing cameras but didn't even know how to use the cameras! Our insurance premeums are all higher because of these morons.

    • Its more for reversing 4wd and kids running behind them is the benefit of having one these, not for parking. If it saves a child's life its worth the cost.

  • seems expensive so this positive vote is just to balance out cwongtech negative, you cant neg a deal cause you think people shouldn't need it!

i don't need one but if the resolution was good enough it would be great to get right up to the car behind you when parking would make it a whole lot easier!

I thought these things were to check if a kiddie is playing behind you under the view of the rear view mirror. I don't really see them as a driving aid, more a safety thing for when kids run out. Still wouldn't ever get one for myself.

    • damn i meant to say that as well… ++ for this point as well…

or if there is something small behind the car, eg pets. not hard to look behind the car but there are always exceptions.

  • I like how it says "It can withstand a hit of 10g force"! Just in case the driver is still that clueless even with one of these… That said, I'd be happy if crap drivers bought this rather than reversing into me/my car. Seems expensive though (+ installation) given greenie4242's comment.

My 2c on the topic: If so many parents buy big cars in the delusion of protecting their little kids only to reverse over them/someone elses perhaps they should be built in/mandatory to make up for the poor design/visability in the first place and the added risk to others.

The unfortunate thing with these cameras is that people tend to just look at the camera when reversing, completely forgetting to check left and right (which the camera doesn't see). Physically turning your head to look behind you means you are forced to scan your blind spots before reversing, so you can see if a car is approaching from the left or right. People looking at a small viewscreen that only shows what is exactly behind them suffer from the human nature condition 'out of sight, out of mind' - they forget that a car might be driving toward them from the side.

The three people who drove into me in car parks reversed straight out of their car parking spot without checking to see if another car was approaching from the left or right, which the camera can't see. A 180 degree lens would see this, but most cameras only see 120-130 degrees. By the time I was level with them it was too late for them to stop and they reversed straight into me, or I jammed on the brakes and they turned out of their car parking spot straight into me, still out of their camera's view. To be honest I think it's a potentially good idea that should be thrown in the rubbish heap marked 'FAILED', like LED indicator bulbs that are impossible to see in daylight and white lane markings that become invisible in the rain.
