Coles: Tasmanian Heritage Camembert: $0.99 (Was $4.99) [Box Hill, VIC]

430

Hi Guys,

First post and thought this was too good not to share.
Was shopping for groceries in local Coles supermarket : Box Hill Centro and stumbled along this "special" price.
Really a super clearance price.
Usually $4.99 no 99c.

There was plenty still in the morning, however at this price, I'm sure it will run out fast.
I suspect its for this store only?

Just checked the expiry and it has a few days left (which is fine for my large family : usually consumed in a few days).

Grab your self a bargein

Almost expired cheese at bargain price…
So enough quantity for a valid deal (10) at time of posting? Will be store specific.

    • -2

The deal was posted hours after seeing stock level, described as 'plenty'. Unfortunately, that means stock level was not known at time of posting. Most stores try not to carry much stock near expiry / useby date. Makes deal less certain.

Adequate level (10) for a deal at time of posting is a posting guideline. A first time poster may not be aware of that.

In 5 hours since posting, no one has reported finding any stock. That does not mean none was found, but it is usual to have some feedback.

My question was simply so people may consider if stock exists, and that it is possibly only at 1 store. No use wasting time searching for stock that may no longer exist.

I posted my experience below of finding stock of same brand of soft cheese days ago (adequate to make a deal) - which sold within 10 minutes after I saw it. Only 1 damaged cheese remained. No use posting that deal :(

'+' votes are even coming from overseas?? That's a long way to go for short expiry cheese!

So feedback from those who bought at 99c? At other stores?
Hopefully some got a great deal.

This cheese is lucky to last 5 minutes at my place too

Don't know what you are saying about editing? Post time was hours after seeing deal.

From OPs deal description, stock level was seen in morning & deal posted in afternoon.

Posted around 3:30pm…There was plenty still in the morning, however at this price, I'm sure it will run out fast.

So a valid question if adequate stock level existed at time of posting many hours after stock was seen. Even OP didn't think it would last long.

Similar deal did sell out fast (10 minutes) as I found at my local store for same brand days ago. I grabbed some at a great price. Commented below.

No one, except OP, has said they found any stock. Without stock, there is no deal.

sounds like it's probably just that store, to clear close to used-by stock.

  • Yep, I did mention close to expired date, however if you have friends or a party to share with or a large family, its usually gone within the 1-2 days.
Not sure how long others prolong the eating of camembert cheese, however it usually is best consumed within a few days of opening.. of course unless you like something blue :-)

    • Picked up few $11 250g Tasmanian Heritage Double Brie for $2 each at Woolies the other day. Short expiry. Eaten up in 24 hours. Yum 😋

Noticed it because a couple were debating whether they should give it to their guests that evening. People gathered. Buying frenzy left only 1 on shelf after 10 minutes.

    • The opening of the camembert packet doesnt reduce the shelf life of the cheese.

      • No, but it dries out rather fast.

Best time to eat and best time to buy. We usually only buy Camembert, amongst other cheeses when they are nearing a so-called used by date but will sus the cheese out on a look, taste, smell and will decide when it needs to be eaten by, not by the date on the packet.

Used by date is the best time to eat Camembert. It's mature at this age and extra creamy. Leave to air for 15-20 minutes to soften before consumption.

Delicious when dipped in whisked egg and then bread crumbs and then deep fried. Consumed with red current sauce us perfect.

    • I think Coles or Woolworths (can't remember which) used to sell a pack of 2 crumbed camembert, which is ready for the oven for 10 mins or so. And it comes with cranberry sauce. Yummy! Kind of a similar idea to your bread crumb and deep fried, with red current sauce.

Too bad, haven't seen it for a while in the supermarkets. If anyone can remember the brand/label, please share. Thanks.

Cranberry sauce - that's what I meant. I could not remember the correct English word for it. Delicious combination.

Also, Cranberry sauce may be on special after Christmas. Good timing ;-)

Aldi sell crumbed camembert as a regularly stocked item.

        • Thank you, will go check it out. Too lazy to do the deep fried crumbing from scratch.

Some cheese ought to be grated
    No cheese should be ammoniated
Some cheese will always be hated
No cheese wants to be called rancid

I don't really think reduced perishables are really worth posting on Ozbargain. I could probably post 10-20 of these kind of deals a week from my local coles, woolies or foodland but it wouldn't be very useful at all to many Ozbargainers because it's stock at a specific store in limited quantity that is about to go bad. I know this post has lots of upvotes so others may disagree.

    • In 8.5 hours, no one has posted finding any stock, except the OP.

Its popular, but strangely few voting live anywhere near the store.

I only looked in as I had found a similar deal on this brand days ago in a Brisbane Woolies. But that was sold out in 10 minutes. Was cheap & tasty Double Brie - twice the quantity at just over twice the price.

I found that in the time it would take to post a deal, it was all gone.

So may be in other stores…
But as the OP wrote - don't expect stock to last long at these prices.

FYI - brie and camembert can be frozen (although I would probably only do it with the mass-produced varieties, not a super-specialty).
Defrost it in the fridge for about 1.5-2 days. Doesn't change the texture at all.
The first time I did this, I started eating the wheel before it had completely defrosted and it was surprisingly salty.
Didn't have the issue with subsequent wheels when I left it to fully defrost.

Heaps of stock in the Richmond (Bridge Rd) store. Best before 19th. Hopefully some cheese lovers can enjoy this before it's thrown out. Central location for those in Melbourne.
