Melbourne Restaurants with a View?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a decent Melbourne restaurant with a nice view of the city, CBD or at least the Yarra river for my boyfriend's birthday. I've done some googling and none of the options are really jumping out at me - either the views aren't actually good (or I can't tell one way or another because the photos suck), the menu isn't what I'm after (e.g. Eureka 89 and its 5 course 'degustation dining'), or they're bloody expensive (though I can compromise on this a little).

So does anyone have any suggestions for restaurants with a good view, suitable atmosphere, decent and not-extravagant food, and an alright price tag?

The only passable ones I've found thus far have been:
- The Merrywell
- The Wharf Hotel
- No 35

Does anyone have any feedback on these? (and yes, I have read reviews, just looking for more detail)

  • The one on top floor of Rialto?

That's Eureka 89, I think, and its menu is a bit odd for my liking. I'm looking for a nice dinner, not a gastronomic experience, haha. (Plus it is quite expensive, relative to what I'm after that is).

No 35 has great views of the city with decent food. I had lunch there not dinner though. Your boyfriend will certainly enjoy the view from the Men's toilet. HAHA!!

The Merrywell is ok, nothing fancy in my opinion.

The Wharf Hotel - cant comment as I haven't been personally.

I would recommend Melba at Langham. Great view and atmosphere, buffer style dinner as well.

Along Yarra River you have plenty of options. ie: Rockpool, Nobu, Waterfront Southgate, The Deck, etc.

    Hope this helps!

    • Thanks this is great.

I wasn't hugely taken by No 35's menu, but I'll give it some more consideration if the views are nice.

I would recommend Melba at Langham

      Thanks I'll check it out.

      ;)

      • I'd recommend Melba too, ask for a window seat if you make a booking

  • I took my sister out for her birthday last week to Bistro Guillaume at crown - they had a lunch deal of $60 for 3 course and a glass of wine, plus 25% off that if you have entertainment book (which everyone should have!). Another deal there is pretheatre which is $65 (no wine, but 3 course, full menu selection instead of limited selection) if you can get there for an early dinner. Food was amazing, best French I've had in Melbourne, and they have a second level you could ask for which would have a view of the yarra and city, with the flames just outside.

If view takes priority, vue de monde can't be beat - brilliant food, amazing 360 degree views at top of rialto… priced to match. They also have a cool bar section at vue de monde, not sure if they serve food or only drinks, but might be good for a post-meal drink if you eat somewhere else.

    • Thought of Vue de Monde too but OP mentioned not the extravagant price tag hence did not suggest. Highly recommend Vue de Monde if it fits the bill.

    • Thanks, this doesn't look too bad. $60 for three courses is definitely a decent deal.

Post-meal drinks at Vue de Monde is a pretty good idea actually, I'll look into it, thanks.

  • Anchorage at Williamstown.

  • Taxi kitchen in fed square is decent, and not too expensive.

  • SkyHigh Mount Dandenong

    • I looked into that after seeing it mentioned on OzBargain, but reviews seem to say the service can be subpar, and the views are highly dependent on the weather. I'll give it another look though.

  • You can look at the conservatory at crown nice view of the river

  • If you are talking about The Merrywell in Crown then don't bother.I went there once, didn't enjoy the food at all.

For something different and changing views what about the tram restaurant. My neighbour's went last week and highly recommended it. No idea of price. They thought it was good value

This! It's not dirt cheap but if you take full advantage of the unlimited drinks it's great value! And if you want the amazing view without a huge price tag just go to the Liu Bar next to Vue de Mont for a before/after dinner cocktail. You can still enjoy the amazing views whilst sipping delicious cocktails for ~$20 per person (for the drinks - it's free to go up there)

    * +1 for no 35. The view from the mens toilet is great!

Love Melba (the Langham), and you can use Entertainment Book there too. Let them know the occasion when you book and they'll leave a treat on the table for you :)
