Smashed My OnePlus One X Screen :(

Hey Guys!

So just before Christmas I purchased the OnePlus One X Through this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218034

So not even two Months and I've managed to smash it! Was working on my car last night and accidentally dropped a spanner on it,

Now in terms of repairs I have looked and located a website that sells the screen with a digitizer on it, for $140 AUD,

Or I could just live with it, the screen is still responsive and works but it's ugly to look at.. I've also considered cutting my losses and just buying a new phone..

What should I do?

This is what it looks like.. http://imgur.com/gallery/YiyQcy2/new

I had a glass screen protector on it as well! but you can see it doesn't goto the corner of the screen :(

Thats HTC One X not OnePlus X They are different ;)

Damn dude. You link him a different phone and then call him a smartass for pointing out your error.
          Real mature bro

        • +7

Bro you need to get some chill in stock cause you're clearly all out of it.

        • +3

Jeez, someone's having a bad day..

        • Toshay, motha (profanity)

  • Or order it from aliexpress (cheaper but longer delivery) and check out ifixit for a fixing guide

    • I've watched the videos and it seems easy if you want to repair everything but the main screen! Soo I might be tempted to possibly sell my phone as is.. I'm just trying to see what my options are first,

I've emailed OnePlus to see if they can do anything for me before I do something I regret.. I've been looking at this as my swap over phone https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/xiaomi-redmi-note-2…

      • Got this phone a couple of weeks after release. For the price you can't get better in terms of build quality and performance. Removable battery is a huge plus.

        • +1

Yes I just saw spare batteries for less then $12 delivered on ebay… Why I didn't go with this other phone in the first place is beyond me… I'm not after anything special :)

I Will sleep it off and make a decision later in the week I reckon, If I do go ahead and try and sell the OnePlus X Wonder if I'll get even $100 for it.. They are $380 ~ at current

        • +1

@Gomo: Try it on eBay. I reckon you might just get the money you need for the Redmi Note 2. People are hyped up on OnePlus at the moment and eBay vendors are charging more than RRP.

        • @kywst: yes I agree ! Will have to wait and see what I want to do

        • @Gomo: I feel for you, I'd be devastated. Trying ebay is probably your best option. Hey, it's basically a new phone and desirable model. There'll be some techy person snap it up to repair or onsell. Having all the original packaging will add value. As you see, there is a lot of talk about the cost and difficulty to repair. If you're lucky a potential buyer may also be unsure about this and pay good money for it. Try 'buy it now with best offer first'. Good luck and enjoy the Xiaomi!

        • @MTWallett: Cheers mate! Will wait a while before I list it! Won't be long till I have the Xiaomi :)

Just put another screen protector on it and live with the broken screen :) Or as others have said it, order a screen online and change it yourself, it is quite easy really and not that easy to break any further ;)

My wife's iPhone 6 screen broke by itself while a screen protector on it. She did not even drop it. The screen protector was fine, but the main screen cracked. Even I have heaps LCDs in stock she don't want to change it as she said she can live with it.

Myself I broke my Asus tablet's screen and that was a $650 item. That hurt and now after 2 years I can forgive myself as I keep telling myself that an Atom processor is too slow :)

    • Would love to but can't justify spending $140 plus my time to repair it, when I can buy a new phone for not to much more :)

I'm disappointed that I smashed it already considering I just came from a 5 year old iPhone 4s! Without one crack on the screen !

If you look at my photo you will see I had a screen protector but It didnt help me :(

      • Order from eBay, about $50. You just need to do the work yourself :)

        • They aren't $50 I wish tho

        • @Gomo:

Oh sorry, the HTC model came out and I misread the ad.

Let me check again and ask my buyer to see if we can find a cheaper for you.

        • @Gomo:

The LCD wholesellers are closed so cannot check but at cost it still would be more than $100.

What you can do is wait/suffer a while and it might be that the LCD price for your phone will drop. It has not been the case for Apple phones but this brand might be different.

Hope Geekbuying can help you out with a good deal :)

        • @datafellows: ive seen screens with digitizers for oneplus one for $60,

But because my screen is still fine I think all mine needs is the glass itself ?

        • @Gomo:

If you can buy the LCD replacement for $60 you should do it, but I also found for Oneplus One for about $40-60 but not for Oneplus X.

I tried to find from TaoBao last night but they were all over $100 so I expect delivered wholesale price still to OZ over $100.

      • If you end up deciding to sell it cheap, I'd be interested in fixing it myself. Would have to be cheap enough that me repairing it would still be cheaper than buying a new one, though, otherwise there's no point.

iPhones are very hard to smash. I don't know how they do it, but my iPhone 4 dropped off my desk dozens of times, then the one time I drop my Nexus, it shatters into a billion pieces.

        • Yeah my iPhone 4s is over 5 Years old been dropped heaps of times and it's never cracked!

How much would you consider reasonable for selling as is? Brand new these are around $400 AUD Delivered at current, from looking at the cost in screen it's around $109 plus your time to repair, if your offer is reasonable I might have to hand it over to you ;)

        • @Gomo: Yeah, it's a substantial cost to repair it and still end up with a second hand phone. I am interested, but it honestly wouldn't be a lot of money. I'm having a look at parts now, I'll get back to you.

        • @MrMcHairyHead:

Cheers mate, I reckon I could repair it myself but will wait for the parts to get cheaper, the Screen itself works fine so I'm wondering if the glass itself would ever become available, that would be the sub $20 part that I need

Because I figure you just heat the phone up and remove the old glass, then fit the new glass down right?

        • @Gomo: I don't know. It really depends on the phone. On the iPhone 6, for example (which has the curved edges like the OnePlus X) it's… not easy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9drzO9hO_U

Don't hold it specially for me or anything, but I'll have more of a google around after dinner and if I think I can do it and want to make an offer I'll let you know.

  • Sure if you want to the replacement I've seen is $109 delivered but then I've gotta do it myself

  • +2

My two cents: After a few weeks you'll stop noticing a crack that minor.

    • A crack that minor, It's half the screen…

      • pft, it's just a scratch!

  • +3

PM me your Geekbuying order number and I'll see if anything can be done.

    • Sent :)

      • +1

I've passed it onto customer service. I have no idea what they'll say, but we'll find out soon.

        • Yes please ! I highly doubt they will go sure we will replace it but there is always no harm in trying :)

  • I just fitted a new lcd screen to my samsung gt-n8010. If failed, half screen was vertical lines. Bought the cheapest replacenent I could find off ebay. Sent from HK. 128 delivered. You tubed a video on how to replace it and back in business now. Id say give a new screen a go. Ive replaced my nokia lumia a few times and its dead easy.

    • But what about if you had the choice or repairing or buying a similar spec phone for a little bit more?

OneplusX repair $109 plus dismantle phone
      Redinote 2 $180 delivered

Still playing wih my thumbs on this for now

      • Buy the new phone first and wait the LCD price to come down. There are benefits to have multiple phones (I use 4 :)

Doesn't look like the easiest phone to repair. Def harder than my nokia. Might be easier to get a new one and wait for prices to drop for the screen. As datafellows reccomends. From looking on ebay, you can expect the price to drop dramaticly over the next year

  • Will wait for response from oneplus and now from clear who seems to have connections with geekbuy then I will :)

  • I have a one plus one, smashed screen, quote to send to US for repair was too expensive considering price of phone.
So thoight woukd try repair myself, I ordered replacement screen from virofal I think site was, watched YouTube vids, bought tiny electrical screwdriver and within an hour all good now. That was about year ago now and still goibg good still.
Sure I paid about $80 year ago but was maybe when Aussie dollar was strong

    • Oneplus x is a little harder to fit a new screen unfortunately

  • Take it to one of those asian mobile repair shops. Those guys are good with their hands.

    • As well as over pricing.
Got quoted $70 for a small blackberry ball replacement.
Went on eBay, it was $0.70 for the ball and took 20 second to fix it up.

    • yeah happy ending, we both happy at the end, phone fixed, your salary fixed too

      • Couldn't find that mini troll face.

        • Took it to a mobile repair store, they looked confused as to what phone I had! hahah.. They said can't help because they don't have parts for it etc..

  • I'd say leave it.

    • Compared to other phones the front screen will be difficult to repair. The One Plus X teardown shows the front screen is bonded to the frame strong glue. Link
    • Digitiser/phone screen costs a third of the phone price when the phone itself is on special (I got mine $320)

My heart looks like that screen. It's a beautiful phone to break :(

    • Yeah I know! I'm so devastated! My Wife has the same phone and dropped it just last week on our kitchen tiles.. But no damaged at all !

Still unsure what to do at this stage, I know repair options are to expensive at the moment… :(

      • Ignore me missed the fact that this was for the X version.

        • Probably! But OnePlus X is a whole lot different.. :( Wish it only cost that much for the screen for mine.. :(

          EDIT: all good mate :P

OnePlus One has been around for a while hence why parts are cheaper etc, but the OnePlus X only was released in Nov 2015

    Another broken Chinese phone ……

    • +2

All phones are mass produced in china so I don't see why your comparing any other phone ??

  • I'm sorry to hear about your phone. I've dropped mine before and I know it sucks. I bought a screen from ebay and my phone died after only three months of use. My phone was less than a year old (nexus 4 bought from google) so I'm guessing the screen I bought from ebay caused some kind of voltage problems(?). So there's a possibility that some OEM screens may cause internal problems to your phone.

  • I've Purchased a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 4G for time being now

    • do you know if it comes with bloated rom and adware/malware so you have to re-install the os?

      • Yes, My OnePlus X did also!

  • You should give this guy a try:
    https://www.facebook.com/repairmate/?fref=pb&hc_location=pro…

I broke my oneplusone after two years of use. Sent to this guy and they fixed it as new.
But it will cost 140+ to replace though.

    • I'm Brisbane Based, Do you know anything closer?

  • -1

OP, you do realise most screen protectors protect against scratches, not drops?

    That's what cases are for…

    • It had a case installed, in the original picture you can see so..

  • Smashed my Mi3 just before Chrissy and am ordering the screen fix kit for it do do it myself.

    • From where?

  • If you choose to keep phone as is, bear in mind that those cracks have habit if getting bigger.
My onrpkysone was similar but within a week the top half if phone was unusable.
    Good luck

    • the glass tempered screen is over the top and has been since it happened, so won't plan on removing it anytime soon

    • onrpkysone

      ? please explain

      • oneplusone I think :)

  • So I've offically moved to the Redmi Note 2 :) I can say I'm very impressed ! I've rooted it and installed Cyanogenmod [Rom][Unofficial][Stable][2016/01/10][Cm12.1]

It runs perfect! Only thing I haven't been able to find is a FM Radio App for it, But not to fussed about that

  • So I did a quick search on ebay and found someone trying to sell there oneplus x with the broken screen, will be interesting to see if he manages to get the $299 his after

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OnePlus-X-Onyx-16GB-E1003-Mobile-…

All in all Still enjoying the Redmi Note 2 :)

Just thought I'd post up here today I decided I would replace the screen, a new scree with a frame attached has now been ordered shipping via DHL, all up $170 Including postage!

I thought I would cut my losses and try and get this phone back to it's original working order :)

My Redmi Note 2 is still running well !

2 Days after my last post will mark exactly 1 Year! haha

    • are you going to install it yourself or take to a repair store and get them to do it.

      • +1

I have already taken the phone apart earlier last month, I attempted to seperate the front glass from the LCD Panel that resulted in an utter disaster :)

Even with a heat gun and knife it's pretty much impossible!

I found kits for $7 replacement front glass, but you need to separate the lcd + digitizer first..

So the complete kit I have ordered from here, https://www.eshglobal.com/products/replacement-lcd-screen-an…

Is the full frame + screen attached, making the repair as easy as reconnecting to the main board,

The other cool thing is I have spoken with the seller and requested they send me a black one, they will get back to me on that, so once it's all back to normal I'll have a black front and white back :P unique!

    It Lives again ;)

    http://imgur.com/a/7hlkr

Just finished flashing it with Lineage OS :) Android 7 woo :)

    • well done. it'll be like you just bought a new phone.

now look at all the facebook notifications, jst waiting for you :)

      • +1

Yep :) btw ordered screen with frame on Thursday arrived 9am Monday :) I looked at some other places that said 25 - 45 days shipping :0

  • So you took a pic of yourself when it happened. I think a lot of people would look the same.
