*free shipping on select items above $149 USD

    • Yep I was in the middle of adding in that info. Cheers

    • Looks to be pretty much everything except "bulky/oversized" items.

  • +2

I saw that offer last night, but almost everything were more expensive than buying in Australia.

    • +1

maybe write to your local mp and request a portrait of the queen of Australia?

A famous OzB deal if I recall.

One example of a good deal:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/846330-REG/Hitachi_0S0…

    HGST 4TB 7200 rpm disk for US$174 ~= AU$248

I bought mine when the AUD was a lot better but I paid US$144 shipping (for 5x drives.)

Amazon looks to be the same price as B&H but you pay for shipping.

For reference the cheapest 7200 rpm disk I can find on static ice is a WD Black for AU$295.

    Currency conversion kills it.

I own this chromebook, its gooooood. screen is like a macbook retina, almost. The touchpad however is really kinda shit but you get use to it, keyboard is pretty nice/ok. And it's fast, even as a celeron. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1186739-REG/toshiba_pl…

  • Lots of small items are not included…I had a cart going when I realized that most of the things in there were not included

    • +1

So….I discovered that if you get close to 150 with a few of the items labelled as "free shipping to Australia" you can add smaller stuff that is not labelled….

Look for the 2x32gb Extreme UHS3 SD pack for USD 36.95, good value if you already have a few items

  • OP's posted deal is for an external HGST. For those with an extra drive box lying around, or those of us with NAS units, these two look good:

HGST 4TB Deskstar Coolspin 3.5" SATA III Internal Desktop Hard Drive $220.59 AUD:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/835055-REG/Hitachi_0S0…

HGST 4TB Deskstar 3.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive $229.17 AUD:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=10213…
    (compare to Scorptec, $255 + shipping, http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Hard_Drives_&SSDs/HDD-_3.5%22_Drives/54349-0S03666?gclid=CL7A6_HnxcoCFRWTvQod2dIA_Q )

Now the question is, to Coolspin or NOT to Coolspin, for a Synology NAS. When people have rated the Hitachi HGST as very reliable, I'm not sure if they've rated the Coolspin (5400 RPM) or non-Coolspin (7200 RPM) version of the drive. Speed-wise, I'm not sure I'll notice a big difference, since I'll be installing these drives in a Synology NAS and accessing them via Ethernet anyway. What I care about is RELIABILITY. Ozb'ers, any thoughts?

For those wondering about WD owning HGST now, here is a relevant review comment found at B&H: "As long as China's anti-monopoly regulators (yes, China's; sad, really…) keep prohibiting WD from consolidating HGST's production lines with their (lower quality) WD lines, these can't be beat for reliability."

    • The irony of China keeping WD from combining the production lines…

    • FYI, the decision seems to be between "green" 5400 RPM drives that spin down when not in use (which causes wear and tear on the drives) and fast 7200 RPM drives that don't spin down but which run hotter (which, no surprise here, also causes wear and tear on the drives). What to do, what to do… I'm going to go for 3 (to fill up 3 of 4 slots in my NAS), so maybe the heat is more of a worry than the spinning up and spinning down? I really don't know.

      • I'd avoid the WD Green drives for NAS,there are a lot of reports of high failure rates in NAS and even WD no longer recommend them for NAS. WD Red would be the ones to get from the WD line

        • +1

Not going for WD AT ALL. I'm looking at the HGST models, which come in standard and "green" (lower power, periodic spin-downs) varieties. Both HGST's seem to have about an equal number of recommendations and similar failure rates.

    • +1

      I'm facing the same dilemma.

I think I've ruled out the WD reds because of the non retail packaging when shipping internationally. I'm also happy that HGST is more reliable than WD generally.

I have some older 7200 rpm (non nas) 4tb HGST drives and while ok with their reliability - they are too noisy for a NAS.

Even though coolspin have only 32mb cache, I'm thinking it is the most suitable for NAS for this reason.

    Another good deal imo.
Amazon Fire TV stick with voice remote and Amazon Fire TV streaming media player 2015 for US$149.98 (AU$214.83) and free DHL Express shipping.
Another good option with free shipping is Roku 4 streaming player and Chromecast 2 for US$154.88 (AU$222.78)

    • Have added that to the post

They often have very well priced computer-related stuff, too, Not just photography equipment! HDDs and SSDs often come up.

DHL tracking is the worst. It basically stops after it leaves the US and the next update is when you collect it. There is a number to ring, but it doesn't actually ring. You can email them, they took 3 weeks to get back to my inquiry, by which time the package had arrived. Work on about 2 weeks for something to be delivered.

    • When I buy stuff from Amazon and it's sent by DHL I don't have any issues.

      • Same, but for whatever reason, with B&H the tracking just stops. Plenty of people on whirlpool confirm this as well. Shame, because B&H Photo have great customer service in my experience.

    • I haven't had any issues with DHL shipping when I have purchased through BHPhoto. The experience has been very good.

      • From my experience in the last 15 years, DHL are by far the best carrier worldwide. Spot on all the time…and almost routine 2-day delivery times regardless of country of origin for their express service.

        • I agree. I just bought some items from B&H Photo last night (midnight) and this morning I received an email and tracking number saying that the items will be delivered this Friday! ie from order to picking and shipping, from New York to Australia, and all in 2.5 days door to door! I am impressed!

  • I ordered a Roku 3 and 2 Chromecast Audios. The free shipping didn't update in my cart or checkout, but I emailed support and they got back to me and got it sorted real quick.

  • Anyone well versed on purchasing >$1000 worth of items (2 in total)? The finger is on the trigger on $3200 worth of stuff, but I have no idea what "taxes" i'll need to pay on delivery…

    • You would need to pay 10% in taxes. The courier company might also charge you an admin fee if you pay the import tax to them instead of direct to customs

    • Amazon automatically adds customs charges I think, not sure if B&H have the same arrangement. Otherwise, check the customs website - I think it was 10% + ~$50 processing charge.

If one of the items is under $1000 get it sent in a separate shipment, but I guess you already thought of that.

      • Yeah, Subwoofers at $1500 each…

  • I would be so tempted to take this up - but the exchange is shit right now. Everything costs 35% more. Might as well buy in Australia you aren't really saving anything by getting it "cheaper" in the US lol.

  • BH have an amazing range and great review system for helping people purchase common photography equipment…however, as people have said, their prices even with free shipping are so bad that with the currency conversion, there's just no real benefit ordering from overseas, even if its shipped with DHL.

My last purchase from there was for equipment they're carrying exclusively, the only place i could get a specific model/device.

Hi Roost, what did you buy that is only available at B&H? Just curious.
We love B&H; their service is amazing and some items are just cheaper from there even including the current exchange rate, eg short professional microphone and audio cables, and all types of photographic accessories, clamps etc. Also some things are just not available here locally - like the massive range of video jibs (or cranes) which also include free delivery with this sale.
