  • Hasn't this always been the case?

Either way, this is only for pass renewals, not new passes.

    • The announcement of this discounting scheme was made in December.

At no point is it said to apply only to pass renewals, and renewal is not mentioned anywhere. [edit: obviously the work renewal does apply in relation to the registration]

I think you may have this confused with something else.

      • Ahhh, wording confused me at first glance.
After re-reading it you are right.

    • It is available to new passes. The online renewal requirement is on vehicle rego.

"When you renew a NSW vehicle registration online through Service NSW, you can get a $15 discount on All Parks and Multi-Park annual passes. Look out for the link on the Service NSW website when you reach the Finish page, after re-registering your vehicle online."

      • Got it.
        See above reply.

    • Used to be $65.

      When does this offer expire?

      • +1

The scheme has only recently been introduced so I would expect it to stick around, but they may find a way to restrict it (rather than using a generic code)

  • Note as well I took dad to the snow last year and cause he was a Vietnam veteran he got a free pass for the year and just has to keep renewing it. Was very simple to complete and he simply had to be in the car for me to use it.

    • +1

Full size life size cutout of your dad would make this a great bargain hack. Here's a link to get you started https://www.lifesizestandups.com.au/

At first I was like what the hell, then literally LOL'd.

You have to pay to go to a public park ??????

    • Maybe their rates are cheaper or something

    • +5

No, you have to pay to take your CAR in there.

Pretty standard to ensure the tracks can be maintained well enough for vehicle access. $50 is very cheap for a years access if you do a bit of camping etc.

      • -3

No, you have to pay to take your CAR in there.

        Did Milat have to pay?

        • +2

          That was a state forest

        • was that a national park or a state forest?

        • @AsSeenOnTv:

was that a national park or a state forest?

          What's the difference ?

One belongs to the nation and the other belongs to the state.
One is a park and the other is a forest.

One has unicorns, fairies and snow in winter, the other has dirtbikers, axe murderers and logging trucks…

  • Does the pass have to be permanently stuck to the windscreen? Can I simply place it on the dashboard like a parking ticket?

    • +1

Yes it's supposed to be stuck on. And it has your car's rego number printed on the pass so you can't use it with another car.

      • -3

so you can't use it with another car.

you can just switch the plates, only takes 2 minutes.

        • apparently that makes the police sad, but then they cheer up and give you a present.

        • -1

          @altomic:

You still pay for the rego of both vehicles… They have their money…

I'm not suggesting you steal plates from somebody else's car…

        • +1

@jv: using plates from a different car is an offence regardless of who owns the plates/car

        • -1

do you have a link to the relevant law?

        • +1

@jv: this is from SA but similar laws are in place in QLD and I'd assume every other state or territory.

          MOTOR VEHICLES ACT 1959 - SECT 47D

47D—Offences in connection with number plates

              (1) A person must not—

                  (a) drive on a road, or cause to stand on a road, a motor vehicle to which is attached a number plate that bears a number other than a number allotted to the vehicle; or

                  (b) drive on a road, or cause to stand on a road, a motor vehicle to which is attached a number plate that has been altered, defaced, mutilated or added to; or

                  (c) drive on a road, or cause to stand on a road, a motor vehicle to which is attached a colourable imitation of a number plate; or

                  (d) without lawful excuse, have in his or her possession a number plate or an article resembling a number plate that is liable to be mistaken for a number plate.

          Maximum penalty: $5 000.

              (2) If a motor vehicle is driven, or caused to stand, on a road in contravention of subsection (1)(a)

          , (b)

          or (c)

        • @altomic:

          just drive off-road then…

        • @jv: you're still driving on state or federal land. on private land you're able to drive unregistered vehicles.

        • @altomic:

          Read the law you quoted…

        • +1

          @jv:

Unfortunately, road rules in Australia apply in any area accessible in a vehicle by the public. Therefore vehicles traveling or standing on non-roads, such as off-road tracks, shopping centre car parks, etc, are still subject to the same road rules. This is quite different from the US where any land not owned by the government is considered private land and not subject to road rules.

Unfortunately, road rules in Australia apply in any area accessible in a vehicle by the public

do you have a link to the relevant law?

        • @jv: i was quoting a specific part of a certain law regarding registration plates. You need to look at the particular legislation where it defines what a road is, and where unregistered cars can travel.

        • @altomic: you don't pay to go to a national park in Qld tho

      • +1

That's the thing I don't understand. If the rego is printed on the pass, then that means the pass won't work if I move it to another vehicle anyway. What's the point of forcing me to stick it to the windscreen?

  • -4

I think if you don't have a pass, you'll be fined $12 (which is the same price as the one day admission). So if you're only going a handful of times in the year, I think it's a pretty good risk.

    • +5

The money goes to a good cause - maintaining facilities like surfaced roads, toilets, BBQ and picnic facilities. In parks that don't have any of these facilities you generally don't need to pay.

    • +3

The fine is $300, with a maximum of $3,300 (if you take it to court) under 4(2)(e) of the National Parks and Wildlife Regulation 2009

      http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_reg/npawr20093…

  • Wait, didn't the non-kosi one used to be $44?

    • That might have been the country parks pass…

    • the non-kosi one used to be $44?

who wears their kosis to a national park anyway?

  • So with the above link one can buy the pass at a time separate to the rego renewal?

  • I just paid $65 a month ago…good value I would say, thanks OP.

  • Don't forget it's a 12 month pass (as opposed to a 2016 pass) - don't buy it until you need it so you get the most value for money out of it!

    • good point. wonder how long it takes to arrive in the mail after you buy it?

  • So this bargain is only avail to people with NSW registration? Perhaps title needs to change?

    • +1

The point is that the promotion is only 'offered' when you renew your NSW registration online, but the implementation doesn't actually require it.

Having said that it is a NSW pass, that only applies to NSW parks, and the first word in the title is already NSW.

  • My registration is due for renewal only in August 2016, so do I need to wait till then to avail the $15 off the ParkAnnual Pass?

    • +2

no, you can buy it now if you want. buy it right before you plan to go to a park.

      • -1

No I can't.. When I tried renewing the rego of the vehicle, I got error message saying my car is not due for renewal.

Can I still get that $15 discount even without renewing the registration by clicking the link OP has provided?

      • -1

Not valid for a year though, valid until 2017 so probably worthwhile getting it now.

  • -1

Does this free entry work in Parks managed by local councils as well ? For example Davidson park ?

  • +1

I don't like that the passes are linked to the rego and not to the person / household. Don't own a car and always have to pay daily fees when I visit a pass with a rental :-(
