What is the hobby / thing that you like doing but other people would consider it a nuisance?

To clarify, I'm talking about things that you like/ like doing that drive other people insane, not thing that you do to deliberately annoy others.

For example I know a lot of my friends hate loud exhaust but I personally love it. I don't have a loud exhaust on my bike but I laugh every time I see someone getting annoyed by other bike's exhaust sound.

What's yours?

I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old baby and we live one street away from my suburb's main road. It's just a regular 60kmh street, has a primary school on it, lots of peoples' houses. Every so often some knob decides his car should make some very loud noises for the fun of annoying people in their homes. My kids wake up from this in in the middle of the night sometimes. When you've got a 4 month old, a toddler who routinely wakes up once every night, a sick wife and a job, sleep is more valuable than gold. A baby who gets woken up often doesn't know how to "just fall asleep again".

If you do it in the suburbs, you're a shit human being. Shit.

It's usually Harley owners or other bike owners who have modified their exhausts. Rotarys are pretty rare these days

      Hobby: Ham Radio

      Issues:

      1. I would like to install a HIGH tower

      2. Cheap or Poorly-Designed audio gear
. . can be adversely affected by my Transmitter,
. . when I speak to friends overseas or locally

      3. Some gated communities, torrens title groups,
        . . etc. FORBID towers & (roof-mounted or tree-
. . to-house, etc.) strung wire antennas, etc.

When Older Ham Licensees move into aged-care,
they can lose contact with friends they met
      "on-the-air" due to similar restrictions.

(EchoLink can be a workaround, ie, if the aged-
care provides or lets residents install I'net

      Remote-controlled HF/VHF/UHF transceivers may
need to be set up (with antennas) if Internet
      is NOT available.

Perhaps unlimited mobile data plans will come
to AU in time to enable oldies to enjoy their
      fav Internet radio/TV broadcasts/podcasts, as
well as their EchoLink-connected Ham contacts.

      :-)

PS In Canada, oldies pool some their re$sources
& buy or build the kind of multi-unit homes
they want to grow old in. Cooperative groups
meet, become familiar through projects & some
committee work, etc. The group buys land with
existing structures, that can be upgraded or
enhanced; OR they an design & build purpose-
built housing on land they own/buy.

They might have kilns, music rooms, Ham Radio
station + antennas, astronomy telescope, etc.
horse agistment areas, pet walking areas, etc.
      - accommodating WHATEVER their members want
or need in their later year.

There would surely be similar groups & places
to live later years with, even in AU.

Any examples? What "hobbies" are accommodated?

Oops! I left out the Big Problem (IMO): ACMA.gov

Here's why I feel it is one:

(One problem: In recent years, AU's comms regulator - ACMA - paid to send its "radio inspectors" etc. around AU - to seak at Radio Clubs - to warn AU Hams that imported radio would need to be restricted to transmit ONLY on Ham freq's.

A subtle form of action against end-users importing Chinese radios, which tend to be capable of transmitting outside Ham bands… eg, in AU's UHF CB.

ACMA - has been showing its disdain for AU's Radio Hams, eg, by pricing AU's Hams out of the hobby, charging EXCESSIVELY HIGH license fees - upwards of $72 per year.

…while CA, UK, NZ, US & even SE's Hams enjoy Cost-Free licenses (some good for Life, to save the regulators cost) from their regulators.

Invitation to Surrender your Amateur License:

In fact, a very recent letter ACMA sent to Hams, whose licenses are about to expire, shows the "Total" cost of a Ham license or $95 (almost all Tax), but DOESN'T indicate if that's the new Annual cost or if it covers some number of years.

The same letter tells such Hams how to indicate they want to SURRENDER their License.

(Would a non-commercial Sailboat license-holder, if such licenses exists, EVER be sent such a letter? I doubt it. Does anyone know? :-)

ACMA finds ways to INSULT AU's Ham licensees (eg, limiting our Transmit Power levels to a small fraction of North Americal maximum's; after NZ's regulator raised NZ Ham's transmit power limits to "World best" levels, ACMA could only offer AU's Hams a "Trial" - on paying yet another (application) fee - to see how well they "handle" such "awsome" power.

Of course, few participated in the "trial" and - in the end - ACMA refused to give AU's Hams Higher Transmit Power… yet another INSULT from C'th Gov't.

ACMA's new tradition of unduly TAXING people for participating in a self-educational hobby is as unwise as taxing Income, IMO. (Taxing consumption (GST) seems a better.)

Anyway, there are some of the issues arising in my Hobby of Amateur Radio.
I understand that Amateur Radio in China is done more as a Sport. In N Amer,
people enjoy conversing on-air, across a wide range of topics; in the old days
only Religion, Sex & Politics were politely omitted from the OK-list of topics.

But Ham Radio was a Rural person's way to hear & speak with City folks, & learn
more about all that this Life has to offer, ie, in various professions, other hobby interests, businesses (It's of course not permitted to -do- business on Ham Radio,
but that doesn't meant one can't tell business stories, from past times.)

        • You may have some allies in those who love FPV RC (first person flight) as we're also heavily restricted due to outdated laws from the ACMA. We need a HAM license to use a video transmitter above 25mw - why would I want to join another hobby to carry out mine? And anything of serious power for long distance remote flight is illegal here. Meanwhile most other countries are starting new industries based on this, while the ACMA goes after hobbyists. What am I paying my taxes for exactly? Not to mention the media who paint anyone flying multicopters as A) terrorists B) perverts, or C) all idiots who fly in public places and crash their toys into cars. The stupidity…

    Cycling.

    Aaand go!

    • +1

      Woo… No you didn't !!

    • +17

      get off the road

      • +32

Yes, get off the road. Especially when there is a bike path next to said road.

        • +8

Cycling is sweet. You don't need a licence, or rego.

        • +12

@Euphemistic: No issue with 99% of cyclists, just the 1% (profanity) that ruin it for everyone.

        • +14

          @thorton82:
Same can be said about drivers.

        • +13

          @Drew22:

Probably more like 30% of drivers. But the 30% don't drive their cars on bike lanes at peak hour doing 3kmh.

        • +8

@Drew22: oh so 3kmh is an exaggeration but 30% and cars driving on bike lanes isn't? It's called hyperbole, not understanding that is borderline stupid. My point is that I'm all for cyclists, but the (profanity) who use roads in peak hour, travelling at 30kmh at best, taking a whole lane of traffic when they have a perfectly viable bike lane next to them is incredibly selfish. And the argument that other cyclists are too slow as a reason for riding on the road instead is ridiculously hipocritical.

        • +1

          @Drew22: Great talking to you

        • -4

@thorton82: and the bikes arent doing 3kmh, but then again, the car just had to pass that cyclist to beat it to the next red light …

        • -4

@thorton82: How can 1% of cyclists ruin it for everyone? And is that everyone in the whole world? hehe

        • -4

          @thorton82:

It's just the same stupid arguments over and over again.

        • @thorton82: Good thing that a lack of registration nor licence means we can never really tell if that is true

        • @Drew22
          no it isnt….
(you reply: ' yes it is.')
then i go: 'no. it isnt….'
          then you g…oh never mind.

        • hehe

        • @thorton82:

1%!!!! You are either not a cyclist, or you are one of those cyclists.

I cycle to work. I follow the road rules.
I would say closer to 80% of cyclists are (profanity). And if you remove commuters from the stats, it's up in the high 90's.
You just have to ride to work around 6am to see them.

And I have said to friends who are cyclists about it and why I wont ride with them. They don't know what it is, but they agree they turn into arrogant pricks when they are cycling. Off the bikes they are nice people.

I like to cook. However, my housemates do not like it when I cook because I am not so organized. Hence, the kitchen gets dirty.

    • +11

I like to adopt a 'clean as you cook' routine that involves cleaning as you go. If you do it right, everything is sorted before you sit down to eat. Helps if you have a dishwasher though.

      • +1

THIS!! It's not difficult to do, this is what you should be taught in school, and especially if you plan to live in a sharehouse.

    • As long as you clean it yourself I don't see why they would object.

    fuk*ng neighbours pit bike

    • uh oh…

      • hhmmm… you have no idea how annoying (from sitting on it vs. sitting in back yard listening to it)

    • +3

Well id def be annoyed if i saw a neighbour doing such an indecent act to my pit bike

    • +2

yup my neighbour loves to rev his motorcycle with loud exhaust for minutes on end

      He's really trying my patience

  • +34

Hunt for lowest price and values even it is only about 50 cents differences, buy anything only on deals and check on bargains here regularly.

Household say you are a bargain sick and have mental problem and just go earn more

    • +9

Say household need to check on themself - they disrespect money values and why they work harder to go earn more then spend more than needed to - they should buy anything only on deals!

Whats the differences - maybe they have mental problem!

    • +1

About the 50 cents differences, man you gotta think about time, effort, petrol, car depreciation and the risk of a relationship. And also not finding any cheaper options, come back to the first store and that item is gone. Been there done that.

          Its strangely … satisfying.

        • @qwijibo: Dont blame me for your new found addiction. Have you seen the punch yet?

        • +1

@dylanando: Oh yep, watched a heap of those. Especially that one where she manages to pull the cyst sac out intact. Looked like some sort of insect larvae cocoon.

        • @qwijibo: Those ones give me a real tingle inside haha. Then she dissects it. Hope she returns that skin inside of the cyst, Possibly stapling it back onto the patient.

        • @qwijibo: link? I just watched a whole bunch but didn't see that…

        • @jonathonsunshine: https://youtu.be/mwrpvjQLf-c?t=9m8s

The intact sac reminded me of a moth cocoon where the moth has burrowed its way out.

        • @qwijibo: check out the tonsil stones videos. I checked for like 2 days, unfortunately (or fortunately ) i done have them.

    • +1

really people upload videos of that?

Playing bass guitar when i was in a second floor flat.

The neighbours that didnt dig it were knobs anyway, the ones that were cool were fien with it as long as not 3am in the morn sort if thing

      • -2

Yeh well its in the past now….and bass sounds more kick ass when it vibrates through the furniture

    • +6

I dont get why people play or listen to music loud in a block of units, a set of headphones and everyone is happy, your just asking for trouble from your neighbours in my opinion

      • +4

Coz its legal in our free country from 7-10pm weekdays / 10-12pm weekends and its anti social when crew are round to be listenng to headphones

        • +7

Exploiting our joke of a law system for your own selfishness in my opinion, i just think its bad form to disturb your neighbours on purpose because you prefer speakers, that's just slack but hey karma and all

        • +5

          @Elnato: straya

        • -4

@Elnato: perhaps its their karma to have wicked thumpin bass layed down for them

      • +2

because listening to music on headphones and listening to music on floor speakers is an entirely different experience
but y'know… respect your neighbours all the same & don't crank it early morning or late in the evening!

        • +3

completely agree but if your living in units wall to wall with other people its pretty slack to play loud bass when you know its going to piss people off

        • -4

@Elnato: bass wasnt necessarliy too loud, the lower notes just carry further and get into the structure of older buildings with a lot of steel in them

      • YOU'RE just asking for trouble if you can't differentiate between your and you're! :P
