Hollandia Beer 24x 330ml $27.90 @ Dan Murphy's (Usually $30.99)

530

Just noticed this on Uncle Dans website…

https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_367804/hollandia-be…
Hollandia 24 pack beer @ $27.90. Works out cheaper than the Homebrand Arc Valley.

These are usually $30.99 and at 1.2 Standard Drinks per bottle, this ends up costing less than $1 per SD.

A typical smooth Euro lager, so if that's your sort of drink you shouldn't be disappointed!

A quite drinkable euro lager, had a couple of slabs over xmas, needs to be nice and cold. Incidentally $28 is the regular price I pay for this at my local Dans, never seen it over $30.

    • +2

I have lived in the Netherlands for most of my life… i have NEVER come across this stuff.

      • +7

It's like seeing Fosters in Australia.

        • My local had a sale on Fosters for Australia day…
          stock not touched!

      • It's very similar to Bavaria

        • +1

          So… Pretty vile?

        • +1

          @Martijn:
Bavaria and this is OK for cheap beer.
You need to pay 125% at least for anything remotely better.
And even at that pricepoint, the vast majority are worse.

To be "guaranteed" better, you need to move into the $45+ (on special) price bracket.

        • -2

@Martijn: Yep. This is absolute inexcusable pisswater, unless you're 18 and want to get wasted on the cheap, but even then I'd recommend a 5 litre of the Kaiser and a bottle of Solo.

Life is too short for shit beer.

        • @thescarecrow84: Another elite beer snob. Please do share your recommendations for a good beer?

I feel life is too short replying to your comment, yet here I am.

        • +1

          @pufffdragon:
The best, most accessible and cheapest good beer is Coopers Pale Ale..
If I'm going to drink Lager, then this is just as good as any of the others and at a significantly lower price.
Sometimes I want a Lager, sometimes I want a flavoursome beer.

        • @scubacoles: Thanks. I will ad that one to the list to try.

        • @scubacoles:

I don't mind steamroller pale ale.
For a good beer, i pay premium and go belgian. Chimay, Duvel… but i don't drink those to get pissed.

        • @Martijn:
Steamroller Pale is OK, Coopers is significantly better (could be the South Aussie in me coming out, but I think it's a fair assessment).. Plus they're not the "generic brand" of a mega corporation!

Belgian Abbey style or Abbey ale's that's not even the same game, let alone the same league!
And on price (especially here), flavour/appreciation and best drinking situation they're arguably closer to wine than beer.

Let me put it this way, if it were a decision between Oranjeboom, cheap crappy Dutch Beer, at $40+ (on special) and Hollandia at $33 (standard price). I know which one I'd be choosing!

        • @scubacoles:

          LOL.
To make you jealous… was in the Netherlands in July… we stayed at a camping near Heusden, which is close to the Koningshoeven Brewery (where the beautiful LaTrappe is created). A BIG bottle of quadruppel (from memory 750ml) cost about 4 euro. My goodness it is easy and cheap to get pissed on that. And the hangover isn't bad. Which, IMHO, means you've drunk a good beer, not some shit with a crapload of preservatives.

Before people judge, some explanation. I was born and live in Holland until i was about 21. My opinion of Australian beers (certainly the mainstream ones) isn't very good.
I do miss brands like Dommelsch and Grolsch (sorry the stuff with the same name here doesn't taste the same). I miss Grolsch Canon (big bottle, 10% beer. LOVE it).

        • @Martijn:
          Very Jealous…
I actually don't believe the 4 Euro bit.. If it's true then I'm quadruply jealous!
I'm sure I was paying more than that for a Leffe Tripel in Zeeland 15+ years ago!

I've certainly not spent enough time in Belgium drinking beer.
Spent a decent amount of time in The Netherlands drinking though, on Korfball tours.

No preservatives in Coopers. It's not a shade on an Abbey Ale, but it's the tastiest local you'll find before moving into true Craft Brews at $70+/carton.
Pale Ale is easily the best value beer in Aus for beer lovers I reckon.
Can be had in the $45 range on special, in which case you should stock up.
Sparkling, good price anything under $50 at least here in SA. Sparkling seems to be more common interstate than Pale, although their distribution is getting better so Pale is becoming more available.

Most of the "imported" brand beer we get here is brewed locally and sold cheaper than the local brew that comes out of the same factory (which I completely do not understand), and doesn't taste anywhere near the taste of the actual beer. Most of the rest, is brewed in another country apart from the actual origin country of the beer, increasingly China (Hello Asahi brewed in China - no you don't look the same, and nor do you taste the same!).

        • @scubacoles:

I actually don't believe the 4 Euro bit.

It wasn't at a pub, it was at the local bottle-o in Heusden. A 33cl bottle goes for about E1.89 (http://www.drankgigant.nl/bieren/speciaalbieren/la-trappe-qu…).

I bought a slab from DM yesterdayfor $29.99 and a really nice drop, especially when chilled to within a degree or 2 of freezing. They had a 03/2017 use by date. I will be lining up for a couple more slabs at this price. Thanks OP !!

    • +5

You are missing the flavor when the drink is chilled to such a low temperature. Basically any drink will taste okay at near 0…2 degrees.

      • +29

I know right, I personally heat up my beer for max flavor, tastes like fresh piss, you guys are missing out.

      • +2

This beer doesn't have flavour - if you are going to drink beer for the sake of drinking beer, may as well buy this cheap rubbish than pay $45-50 for Corona.

        • I've always thought corona was a relatively flavourless beer myself but each to their own.

        • @DarwinBoy: Yeah that's what I mean - if you want flavourless beer buy the cheap one.

        • @pdtmathieson:
Ha, yep thats what you clearly meant. Always a good idea to reread what you post but also worthwhile to reread what your posting to. 2 rules i often dont follow.

  • +1

Thanks OP, just ordered a couple of slabs.

    • +4

Would be $68.70 for 3 slabs through the current Dan Murphy's AMEX offer

        • +3

Or you could be a dick.. Either way you're a chump…

        • +1

So what do you suggest? Please enlighten everyone here your highness with your superior knowledge.

  • from Holland?

    • Imported from Holland/Netherlands - take your pick ;)

      • +4

Holland is in the Netherlands as England is in the UK. Sort of.

      • +1

I find the one from Holland a little watery. The Netherlands brew is far superior.

        • Must be something to do with the coastal outlook.

        • The things I know about Holland are two big jugs, windmills and orange colour soccer team.

        • @eatwell365:
          No, that's all The Netherlands

    • +8

As a Dutchman from Holland in the Netherlands…Ive never heard of Hollandia beer until I moved to Oz

      • +1

Same. Never seen it. Is there a brewery name on it?

      • +1

I saw a couple of these type of cheap imports while I was living there… I am pretty sure I saw this at some rubbish supermarket somewhere down south.

    • +4
  • Great beer for the price :)

  • +4

Too bad this beer tastes like death..

    • I haven't tried death. Been sipping back on a few Carlton Dry, James Boag Premium, Budweiser, Hahn Superdry & Pure Blondes that I picked up on "End of Bin" clearance lines at 90c a bottle. Does that come close?

      • Nothing wrong with Boags.

    • similar to VB and 4X? which in some shops costs a lot more than $29?

      • +4

        similar to VB and 4X?

No, Nothing but gods nipple comes close to VB.
        XXXX Gold is wee,
XXXX bitter is leaky eneloop's and wee.

Holandia is the owner of the forever "on sale" "closing down" rug stores drink of choice.

Just purchase Cooopers Sparkling Ale and enjoy life!

  • Bought 3 with amex deal. Can't complain with the price.

  • +1

    3.5% cashrewards too

    • Absolutely! The only way to buy, other than the AMEX deal currently going.

      • 4.15% at pricepal

        • +1

Out of interest, do you know if they take 3+ months to pay you like cashrewards? Looking at alternatives due to lost transactions and long waits.. (Sorry TA)

        • +1

@ozy: I found cash rewards to be extremely slow and always outside of there stated time frames. I have not had much problem with pricepal they usually take about 2 months.

        • +1

@aussie28: i'll give them a trial on your advice!
          Cheers aussie28

        • +1

@ozy: Also don't forget to pay with 5% of woollies gift card. Brings the total price down to $25.35 a carton. Also I notice CashRewards has upped it to 4.5% now but I've still got buddy bonus to use up so it's all good.

        • @aussie28: cheers mate!

  • +2

Drank it for years having one now best bang for buck imported beer.nice clean flavours never get sick from it,have been buying it at Dans in the act for 29.00 for ages

  • +1

Three dollar saving for shit beer? Pass.

  • I haven't tried the bottles yet, but ever since Christmas I've been hooked on the 24 x 500ml cans pack. Usually get those on special for $43. Love this beer!

  • -4

saving of only $3 on a carton of mediocre beer makes the front page? poor form ozbargain.

    • +3

A deal is a deal, and I don't think it taste that bad for a cheaper beer. Poor form andg5thou.

  • +1

Cheers, ordered 4 slabs have never tried them but if they are no-good i'll keep them in my fridge for friends I don't like.

    • How big is your fridge?

I don't know if I can splurge +$100 for beer I've never tried, you sound like a good friend to have :)

      • haha I can probably fit two slabs easily and keep two in the garage.

I have one friend in mind that always seems to drink me out of all but my last beer, this should keep him going for a few visits lol.

        • +1

Your friend opens your fridge and sees a wall of Hollandia beer

"Mate, is your username Duram on Ozbargain?"

          haha

  • Been at this price since December.. well at least in Essendon and Campbellfield. Its an okay beer, nothing special and not bad either.

  • Picked one of these up last month too. Not particularly terrible or great but it's alright on a hot day.

Still would pay the few dollars extra for Arc Valley, which is my choice of cheap beer at the moment - tastes like a slightly watered down version of Boags to me.
Hollandia tastes like someone's gotten some Arc Valley and watered it down again…

  • -4

Usually $31 and now $28…? Am I missing something here? It doesn't seem like such a great deal.

    • It's ozbargain. If you can get an SSD $2 cheaper than the exact same one you bought yesterday, you get it, even if you don't need both.
