Bonus Google Play $20 credit: Between 2 Nov 2015 and 12 Feb 2016, customers who purchase any prepaid 4G Android phone and activate the included SIM by 12 Feb 2016 will receive a $20 Google Play credit. A link to access the credit will be sent via SMS within 7 days of SIM activation, but this is likely to happen much sooner. Credit must be activated with Google Play by 29 Feb 2016 and must be used by 1 Nov 2016.

I activated the included SIM card last night, picked a new number, no need to recharge, got the Google Play $20 credit code this morning! I will cancel the service right now. I suggests you activate the sim card in the weekdays, then you will get the $20 Google Play credit code immediately or in the following day. If you are unlucky, do not receive the code within 2 days, you may need to recharge at least $10 in order to keep the service. The service will stop if you do not recharge within 3 days.

One more tip: You could price match it in Big-w and Kmart.

You can unlock this phone from [Ebay](http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Unlock-Code-Optus-Australia-Alcat…), only $1.49,

Thank you for viewing my first post.

        • @morgs640: Hi is there any possible to get the copy of the stock ROM. My phone is brick and don't have a backup. Thanks

        • The first rule of rooting is to cover your arse by backing up your stock rom.

        • @happychappy1: Yes it was rooted supersu installed adaway working, reading the russian forum apparently the system is not writable for some reason perhaps your model is a different model number to mine? mine was not sourced from woolies

        • @tedibaba: I found a russian stock img and flashed it but no sound so you could try that? take it back and say you are claiming early life failure and they should hopefully replace it, aus post refunded my $ as they had no more in stock :)

        • @morgs640: do you know what your model number was? Was it from Optus?

        • @happychappy1: yes it was but aus post a while back, no sorry i haven't had it for a while now

  • Can someone point me to instructions for unlocking this phone?

I've unlocked one before, a Pixi3 with Telstra from last week. It only required my sim pin and one unlock code.

I have a new sim and I'm at 'Enter SIM ME lock' screen, plus I have two codes from the ebay link above, one a NCK code and the ohter a SPCK code and I don't know what to do.

Apparently I'm supposed to enter only one but which one?

    • i just unlocked it for free through a zip i found on the web

gone thru TWRP tho, also rooted

    • JH100 Can you please post what you did to unlock it. was it the NCK code or the SPCK one. I'm still waiting for my unlock codes to be delivered.
I want to use the phone with an existing Telstra SIM

      • NCK is the one you need. Just put in a non optus network sim and it'll ask you for a code.

      • Yes, as above, NCK code does the job.

  • Any good APP that you all recommended?
I got most free amazon apps that are useful from ozbargain.

suddenly not sure what app to spend on the 20 credit

    • vivavideo pro - it is by far the best video editor on android

      • +1

        Thanks for the recommendation

was thinking of star wars awakening at 19.95 but it's only SD version, what a rippoff

  • +1

This looks pretty spectacular for the money if you can get past the poor display. Tempted to grab one.

Now, important question. I see someone has managed to port Cyanogenmod 12.1 to the Pixi 3, but it appears to be for the 3G version. Has anyone managed to install Cyanogenmod on this version? I can only assume the stock software has it's fair share of annoying "enhancements".

Edit: Thread here on XDA, but it's mostly chit chat related to the 3G version. Don't flash a ROM for the 3G version or you will brick it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/root-alcatel…

  • Just picked one up tonight. From about 30 minutes use its OK. Touching the screens a bit inconsistent with response. The bottom home back and menu nav buttons aren't backlit. Am typing this using the phone in the dark and cannot see them. Activated the sim fine. During the steps it asks what prepaid plan you want, there's no way not to pick one. I was never asked for credit card details so all is good.

  • No proximity sensor for turning off the screen during calls. This could be a good or bad thing, depending on your perspective.

    • I can confirm that there is a proximity sensor on this phone.

      • Is there? I think it's like the Lumia 530 where if you touch the screen it turns off. If I move my face close to the phone, the screen doesn't turn off like other phones do.

        • The reason why you have to move it so close to your face for the screen to turn off is because the sensor can only sense objects up to 1cm away from it.

        • +1

@triviums: There is no proximity sensor. On phones that have them, there's a window in the bezel for the sensor (which may or may not be easily seen). On this phone, they've cut costs by eliminating this, and the ambient light sensor. Usually, phones that have proximity sensors also have ambient light sensors.

        • +3

@happychappy1: You have the Pixi 4.5 4G right?

If you do then there is a proximity sensor. This phone does not have an ambient light sensors.

You can test all the sensors this phone has by using this app:
          https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=imoblife.andro…

        • +1

@triviums: Sorry, my bad. You're right. I just tested it again, and there is one.

    • No Auto birghtness sensor though

      • Aka ambient light sensor. A little annoying but not the worst thing ever.

  • +1

Good phone for a child/toddler to play around with.

  • Anyone know of any stores in Melbourne that are running this deal, and have stock?

    • blackburn north didnt have any if that helps :p

  • Price match at office works?

  • Thanks OP. Managed to snag one from Marsden Woolworths, QLD. I think there were one or two remaining when I got mine if anyone's still keen!

  • Big W wouldn't price match, arguing that it was "sale pricing".

    • +1

Really? Gawd - price matching policies really are the pits these days. The simple logic that they're both part of the same damn company couldn't have been considered by them for a nano-second!

And 'sale pricing'…? As opposed to 'the items aren't for sale pricing' - thats really, really daft of them and IMHO probably more indicative of you lucking out into being served by a moron - hope you managed to find one elsewhere. :-)

PS. I got one at WW Park Beach Plaza (Coffs Harbour) - they had around 3 more in the display case at ~11am this morning.

      • Woolies rewards cards no longer work at Big W either -_-

      • I didn't really push them on it (was over the phone), decided to go to another Woolworth instead which had stock. I might give it a go in person and push my luck.

  • Guys how is this as a GPS? Does it acquire lock quickly and no lag in navigation?

    • +2

GPS works fine, haven't tested it extensively but it got a lock in about 5 seconds on my GPS test app. One of the first things I tried. The screen is pretty awful if you're not looking at it dead on so keep that in mind if you want to use it in the car.

  • snagged the last one at prospect woolworths (SA), will activate the sim tomorrow morning in the hope the google play credit comes through quickly :)

    • +1

I wouldn't worry too much about waiting for a weekday. I just now went from opening the box to receiving my Google Play credit all within half an hour.

      • +1

Did you use the first Plan option? My Activation came through, but no Code.

        • +1

I used the $1/day plan for a new number on an existing account.

        • +2

I havent received the google play credit either and i activated on friday morning.Optus chat is no help.completely clueless.

  • wow, this is incredibly frustrating

tried to activate the SIM card that came with it and the optus website tells me the "SIM card has expired, return to place of purchase"

I'll be going into optus tomorrow to get a replacement

    • Try their online chat, it might save you a trip. I had trouble activating a replacement SIM recently and they sorted it out without too much fuss.

      • on their online chat, useless as always, telling me to take it back to woolworths. can i return stuff to a different woollies to the one i bought it from?

        • As long as you have a receipt there should be no trouble returning it to any Woolworth for a refund. A replacement will depend on them having stock. If you do get a replacement, open it there and check the expiration on the SIM.

        • @sjac: the stupidest thing about all this is that the expiry on the SIM that came in the packet was December 2016!

  • +1

The 3G model has a fully working CM12.1 ROM, but the 4G is pretty bare (apply to that chipset in general though)

    • +4

I'll post a debloated stock ROM soon.

      • yes pls

  • +2

    No stock at

    • Merrylands
    • Parramatta
    • Wentworthville
    • Pendle Hill
    • Toongabbie
    • Seven Hills

But got one at Blacktown. Guy said there was a "fair few" left too. Decided to try it purely as a GPS for my housemate.

  • Picked one up at Woolworths Cardiff (NSW) 15 mins ago.
When I rang to confirm stock before driving over there, the girl said there was still "some left".

  • +3

    None left at:

    Maroochydore Big Top
    Maroochydore Plaza
    Nambour
    Sippy Downs

I did manage to snag a couple though. I'll post a de-bloated version of the stock ROM soon. Cracking little phone for the money, ordered some basic screen protectors and a TPU case off Aliexpress for a couple of bucks delivered.

  • Couldn't find any at my local Woolie's. Oh well. :)

  • +5

Fun fact - this device will refuse to charge at a rate faster than 0.6a, even if it's connected to a 2amp charger. Kinda sucks. Fairly sure this is limited via software since most mediatek devices should have no trouble negotiating a 2amp charge rate.

Edit: Still does it when the phone is powered off.

    Edit Edit: More fun facts.

The internal NAND is quite decent. 133MB/s read, 33MB/s write. Better than I expected, and about on par with my old Galaxy S4. Beats my Nexus 4. Destroys my Nexus 7 (but that had a particularly crap NAND). Probably one of the reasons why it performs well.

The stock ROM is unfortunately vulnerable to stagefright. I'll message Alcatel and see if they have a patched ROM available.

    • yep agree, the EMMC is quite fast for something this cheap!

  • Activated online around an hour ago - new number, $1 plan - no SMS yet.

Any dirt cheap flip cases around for these? I wouldn't back the screen to be very durable so think I'll bung in one ASAP.

  • +1

ooo i got my code, its not an email as I was expecting, its a txt with the redemption code. Got mine 10.30am yesterday then (registered it sat night). I was waiting for an email all this time :)

  • +1

Batterylife as a hotspot (supplementing my t$ qlux buzz) uses about 25% after 2.5hrs, the telstra phone was using about 20% which is about the same consumption given the telstra phone has a 2200mah battery (vs 1700mah on this one).

I found out of the box the bloatware will kill battery life if you leave the phone idle, I lost about 10% overnight. A vanilla ROM like CM12 would be nice assuming they got it going properly.

  • +1

Just picked one up at Mitcham (SA) woolworths. There was still one left. Waiting now for activation. Presume I'll need to wait for google play credit to come through prior to unlocking the phone and putting my Telstra SIM in

EDIT: Activation and Google play Credit all supplied less than 2 hrs after getting phone. Just waiting now on unlock code

  • +1

So when you put a different Sim in and it asks Enter Sim ME lock

is it the NCK or the SPCK code that is entered ? or both

EDIT: Just entered the NCK code and all good. Phone working with a Telstra SIM

what is the SPCK code for then ??

DO NOT BUY STAY WELL CLEAR WORST PHONE EVER OWNED!

    • Were you using it for just calls & sms and occasional internet use?
Under Australian consumer law you could return it for a full refund if it's not fit for purpose.

      • -8

I ended up returning it and got a refund, modded it so it wouldn't boot then took it back and said it doesn't work :)

        • +5

That's kind of a scummy thing to do, let alone post about it on a public forum. You didn't even say what was wrong with it. Poor form.

  • I picked the last one up at KMART today, they price matched for me with no issues. cheers..

oh, they never asked for proof, they just called woolies to confirm

  • +1

How long have you guys been waiting for the code? Bought it yesterday afternoon and activated straight away, no SMS apart from all the optus voicemail crap.

    • +2

Ditto - activated at ~0700hrs this morning and nada. Will give it to COB tomorrow - I doubt the online chat folks will be authorised to do anything, given it's flagged in their offer that might take 7 days.

THAT SAID - I know from personal experience with the Optus-3mths of Netflix offer that they're VERY inconsistent in sending out SMS promo codes - and even after I called them 3 times for one code t(which they claimed they'd resend each time!) it never arrived.

A bit more consistency would be nice - as some folks seem to get them after a few mins, others several days and still nothing - thats the type of variation that irks folks and makes a promo a negative sentiment gathering exercise IMHO. :-)

      • Exactly my experience. Did one, and then did another an hour later. An hour after that, the second one got it. Still waiting for the first one to get it… Only difference is that I selected a long-life plan on the first one.

        • I also selected Long Life, and am still waiting. Activated around 1pm Saturday arvo. Suppose nothing would happen until this morning anyway. Maybe I'll get a text tomorrow…

    • about 10 minutes I got my google code and it took about the same for my ebay code.

  • bought one this morning, activated as well, but where can i get my $20 credit?

  • 4 left in WW Blacktown NSW @ 7pm today

  • Got a refund for mine from Northpark woolworths, walked across the road to Sefton Plaza woolworths (yep, there are two woolworths on either side of main north road) and picked up another one - there were at least 3 or 4 in stock there (had to look through the glass at the service counter to see them).

Activated the included SIM on the Prepaid Ultimate plan and received an SMS with a link to redeem the $20 google play credit - typed the link in manually into Chrome on my main phone and followed the prompts, and all done - $20 google credit :)

    Thanks OP!

  • Out of stock at Rockdale NSW..Anywhere can buy 1 around this area?

  • +2

People who haven't got their codes could try sending 'Play' to 111. It will reply with the code. It took some time to get a response.

    • Thanks for posting this up - can you advise who/were did you get this information from?

Sent the msg off, so will be interested to see if anything comes from it.

      • 4hrs later - nothing. :-/

Why am I getting deja vu from Optus' Netflix code promo…..

      • Through Optus chat. Even though its the method to get the code resent to your mobile, I thought to give it a go. Probably after 9 hours I got mine. But it could be coincidence.

        • ~15hrs after sending SMS no code yet. :-/

PS. Contacted Optus Live Chat/Support - told them of no code, they stated they would 're-request' code for my account. No mention of texting 'Play' to 111 etc - which is somewhat odd as why are they advising different things to different folks?

          Advised 48-72hrs till it arrives……..we'll see. :-/

        • @Nikko: Hope you have sent sms without quotes (Play). I received the code from 111 anyway.

        • +1

@ebbzuv: Thanks pal but I did exactly that with nothing back as of time of writing this. :-)

    • Mine has been over 24hrs and still hasn't come through - just sent that sms. Lets see if it works.

Edit: What is everyone using their Google Play Credit for?

      • Update. STILL hasn't come through. Something isn't right. Saying that, I got a missed call and a message that someone has signed up for Centrelink using my new phone number. It hasn't been given to anyone yet. What the..?

  • Big W price matched.
Can we use play store credit to buy chromecast?

    • i used them to buy big mac with free chips and drinks

  • Grabbed one for the mighty wifey; destroyer of phones (RAWR); honestly, not bad at all for $29…the only thing I've seen come close at this price point is the ZTE Fit Smart, which is ~$15 dearer at the best of times! ;)

    • which store? i thought it expired yesterday? also 4 near Box hill vic had no stock yesterday.

      • Yeah, sorry it was yesterday that I got it from Glendale NSW…apparently quite a few stores in the Hunter area still had them.

I'd still ask around, they're obviously running them out, and it doesn't appear to be part of a cattledog sale, so if you can find stock they'll only get cheaper til they're gone IME! :)

  • guys suggestions on a case and screen protector from ebay?

  • Anyone have one for sale? :)
