I have a lot of time on my hands. I earn decently. Should I look for more things to do or just bludge?

So I work a 40 hour week.
Earn decent money.
The thing is that I have approx. 15 hours of the 40 hours free.
Most of the time I check facebook etc and just bludge.
Should I be looking for more things to do or just carry on doing what I do?
Kids are in privare school.
Mrs is working.
Happy as Larry at the moment.

  • Your situation is a side-effect of the traditional one-size-fits-all philosophy of the "structured" working week. It is extremely common in government and large corporations.

If you don't have a toxic workplace environment then just enjoy it. But lay low. Since you work in an office your options may be limited and if you publicise your freedom the wrong person may start gossiping about you. Maureen the office snitch: "Hey grabngo did you leave work at 1 pm yesterday???". Even if you were "under-working" there are slow people the world over who take 40 hours a week to complete a task because they never learnt how to work with Excel.

Personally I hope the situation changes one day and fixed working days go out of fashion, people work efficiently as required and resources are shared equitably.

But in the meanwhile, just ensure you and your family are happy. Since you've got a wife and kids you may have reached the point where a work environment doesn't need to be too exciting. I often work for myself because I hate being around angry people. But working from home can get boring as well so enjoy it while it lasts. There are enough grumpy people in this country.

  • Do something useful. Buy yourself a 3ds!

  • I would study something career related or some pet project that can benefit the company.

  • Not sure why the post - you end it with "happy as larry". Given that you are happy as you are what would motivate you to change ?

Office punks really annoy me. Come do a trade for a week. That will put you to you knees.

If you find any spare time at your job, consider brushing up on sentence structure/syntax and grammar

  • Complete one of many free Udemy courses that are regularly posted, and tell us what you thought about it. I'm sure some people would be eager to hear about it.

  • Definitely find something to do! Pursue a dream, get a pilots license, track your car, read about history, learn a language, do an MBA, anything that is meaningful for you! Involve a friend or partner if you can - but don't waste it on social media and television! Good luck!

  • How much is "decently"?
To answer your question, I reckon you should continue doing what you do - continue coming to a website full of penny pinchers to tell everybody you're cashed up with lots of free time.
Or you could go build something in your garage or shed, pick up a hobby, donate to charity, work on a project, don't know why you're wasting your time on here for with all the possibility within a full wallet?

    • Grant cheekily followed the manager into the office then closed the door behind him. The unaware manager turns round surprised.
Grant emplores, "I feel a deep emptiness and unfathomable boredom.". The manager listens intently with a raised eyebrow.
"There are 15 hours a week and I demand YOU occupy me", Grant says with a sly voice. A loud click is heard. Grant has locked the door behind him…

  • Why do I have a commission job?? :(

  • Aim for mediocrity. It's the Australia way. Don't put yourself out. Don't believe passionately in anything. Comfort and security are all that matter in life.

Ever wonder why everything is so expensive in Australia? It's because people get paid executive level salaries for doing very little. That's why companies outsource as much as is feasible. All the REAL (productive) jobs have left Australia, and now we have hundred of thousands of jobs that amount to little more than paper shuffling.

    • I know what you wrote was more of a rant but it's simply not true. Australia rates well on the global productivity scale. What do you mean by productive jobs have left Australia? You mean outsourced? As someone who works with outsourced teams day in day out I can guarantee you Australians are far more productive by and large.
We do have a VERY easy life though. I agree with that. People will whinge and whine about just about anything (lack of perspective).

  • Well you're on ozbargain. Work harder finding deals for us all if you have so much free time
