Please Help Me with a Stupid Maths Question

Really hoping someone much better than me at maths can help me out with how to split a bill in a share house.

Some people have bills (internet and foxtel) direct debited out of their account.

Names have been changed. Here are the people who have direct debits taken out of their accounts for the quarter:

Jess - $179.85 (internet)
Kathryn - $98 (foxtel - account changed hands)
Amy - $49 (foxtel)
Ramona - doesn’t have any direct debits taken out.

Our electricity bill for the quarter is $369.18. I know Ramona needs to pay the most out of all of us but I am unsure how to calculate the rest. How much should we each pay, and is anyone in credit? We don’t all pay the same amount.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Add it all together, divide by 4 and then work out the difference

    So it's $174 each exactly.

Kathryn pays $70 towards the electricity bill and $6 to Jess

Amy pays $125 towards the energy pill

Ramona pays $174 towards the electricity bill

Jess pays nothing but gets that $6

Don't let Amy blow the money on "energy pills" :-)

    • If the op has to be included then the total needs to be divided by 5.

    From a strictly maths perspective,

Im assuming the more expencive amount with foxtel is the only foxtel, and if you have a second private box I wouldnt consider that a split payed item anyway.

    $647.30

161.80 (rounded) for 4 way split.

Or work it out into 100th and decide what percent of each bill you all pay.

    • I would guess their Foxtel is $49 a month, Kathryn paid two months and Amy paid one.

      • Yes, when it changed hands Kathryn paid two months and Amy paid one.

    • you did something wrong the math is off.

      • I did not include the second foxtel, as explained. DJ may be correct, only op can say.

        • Foxtel account changed hands, it's the one box, so one person had direct debit of 2x $49 and the other of 1x $49.

  • (Total Bills / 4) - any payments made = amount owed by each person

Jess small amount in credit, others owe money.

    Jess - $179.85 (internet)
Kathryn - $98 (foxtel - account changed hands)
    Amy - $49 (foxtel)
Ramona - doesn’t have any direct debits taken out.

    Elecricity $369.18

    So….
    Total bill = 369.18 + 179.85 + 98 + 49 = 696.03
Total bill per person = $174.0075

Jess - already paid more, she will get $5.8425 from Ramona
Kathryn - needs to pay extra 76.0075
Amy - needs to pay extra 125.0075
Ramona needs to pay bill 174.0075 ($5.8425 to Jess, $168.165 to electricity company)

but it still not fair who pays for the modem, the setup fees, foxtel box/setup. Shouldnt that be included as well, who get to keep the electronics has to pay more and how more. Housemates are a B*#%H. If you going to share foxtel who get control over the channels? ETC ETC ETC you can never split it evenly, there just too many factors involved

      • +2

There were no set up fees as accounts had already been set up and modem costs have been absorbed.

    • But Amy + Kathryn + Ramona = $375.

I should clarify that I need to know how much each person needs to pay for the electricity bill, as that's the only outstanding bill.

      • Yeah that's what I explained. The total bill is really $696. Divide that by 4 and each person's bill is really $174.

    • Not quite. If Ramona only pays the electricity company $168.165 then all of them still OWE the Electricity Company an outstanding $201!

      Alternatively

      1. Jess has overpaid her/his share by $5.84 (From her share of $174.01) so she needs to recoup this from any of the three! Lets say from Amy.

      2. Electricity of $369.18 is sill required to be paid fully!

      3. Get Ramona to pay the full amount to the Electricity company of $369.18

      4. Kathryn's end - she will deduct what she's already paid $49.00 from her share of $174.01. Leaving her an outstanding $76.01 to be paid to Ramona.

      5. Amy's end - Pay Jess the $5.84 that she is owed, then add the $49.00 she's paid for her share. So she'll deduct these two from $174.01. Leaving $119.17 for her to pay Ramona.

      • Not sure who are you responding to, but:

Kathryn - needs to pay extra 76.0075 -> this of course goes to electricity company
Amy - needs to pay extra 125.0075 -> this of course goes to electricity company
And Ramona needs to pay bill 174.0075 ($5.8425 to Jess, $168.165 to electricity company)
        Only Jess gets refunded $5

        • sorry.. got confused with kathryns 174.01-98 = $76.01 she needs to pay Ramona.. Just skimming thru and calc on top of my head….

i see u ammend the.. this of course goes to electricity company.. :)

thats a couple of ways to go about it..

        • @j03:

          ahh… okok
yeah I didn't put "this of course goes to electricity company" before since I thought well that's the only one needs to be paid now hahaha…

Yep, a couple of ways. But really they need to sort it out now before another bill comes lol

I cant believe two things…first is the post in itself. If you cant do basic math, then sharehousing needs to be cash only , split equally .

Second is the people whipping out their calculators with so many missing variables - its like guessing how many jelly beans are in a jar…only youve never seen the jar, and the jar may as well be in the moon

      • It's not that I can't do basic math, it's that it's not my strong suit (as stated in the OP) and I wanted to double check against my own calculation.

There are no other variables than those mentioned in this instance.

        • -1

So people just guess how much internet and foxtel are

        • +3

@pointless comment: Clearly comprehension isn't your strong suit, because I clearly state the amount for internet (179.85 over the quarter) and foxtel (2x49 and 1x49 across the quarter for two people). There is no guessing involved, just reading.

@badwolfpart2: oh ok…my bad i guess…i thought they were partial debits….quite confusing really

Any way , TBh ive totally lost interest now so all the best with your issue, cheers

      • dont be mean, not everyone can do maths, not everyone can bake a cake

dam im sure my wife didnt buy her share of butter this week

    • who pay for the condoms? she should pay for her share of the pleasure right?

      • in the interest of my wellbeing i edited this commnt

  • Do an indemnity clawback on all the direct debits, total bill = $0.00

  • You should use the app called tricount it's really good for this kind of stuff

  • Who needs maths when you can do any other job and still earn the same amount of money.

    • Thats true, but I think what the OP asked was really basic; I'm just surprised there is people who still can't do these sort of 'problems.

  • If your having trouble, do each calculation separately. Divide each payment by four, then pay to that person

  • what about interest, Ramona got a sweet deal…

  • Try this site: https://www.shortreckonings.com/

It's simple and easy to use… I use it when I go on group trips with friends…

First, enter the names of the people sharing the expenses…

Next, enter the expenses against the person who spent it as below:
    1. Who Paid
    2. Amount
    3. For whom (Here you select the people involved in the expense)

Finally, click on Compute Payments and it would calculate the amount to be paid per person to even out all debts…

Have a look and let me know how it goes…. :)

    • Assuming that the Expenses are as follows:
      1. Internet: Jess $179.85
      2. Foxtel 1: Kathryn $98.00
      3. Foxtel 2: Amy $49.00
      4. Electricity: Ramona $369.18

The Payments would be as below:
      1. Kathryn to Jess: $5.84
      2. Kathryn to Ramona: $70.17
      3. Amy to Ramona: $125.01
