LPG 39.9c/L at Mogas, Marion Road, Netley SA

730

Incredibly cheap LPG. I haven't seen a price this low in over 15 years. Every other station has around 69.9c/L in Adelaide.

After filling up, I asked the cashier if the price was correct. He fired off a 'ah, because we're running out' answer then looked out the window and was surprised by the price. I drove past the station four hours later and the price was still there.

  • Have you checked what the price of their unleaded was? My tank is under half and would like to top it up by tomorrow at last before our self-regulating petrol stations increase the prices again.

    • +2

The price is in the photo (taken about 7pm). 96.5c/L for E10, 98.5c/L for unleaded.

      • +1

Thanks. I might drop in there in the morning if their unleaded is still the same or better.

Ps: I am on a shitty phone so couldn't see the pic.

Download a fuel app for your phone, it'll show stations with prices on a google map screen. today in WA it's 96-99 cents at almost all stations for unleaded.

      • Most states don't have any live public price data available, but will have soon according to a recent ACCC media release.

        • Woolworths Fuel app works in all states, doesn't it?

        • @sween64: Yeah but only really works for your local pricing. Not much help finding the lowest price in a given area.

        • @jackary: You can search for a suburb, any suburb.

        • @sween64: And if there are 4 in a given suburb, like mine?

        • @jackary: It will show you the nearest 10 stations to that suburb.

People on OzBargain frequently post bargains from a specific store in QLD, or NSW or where ever. This is a genuine bargain and I put the expiry as 24 hours so it doesn't linger too long.

Fuel prices are supposed to be posted in the fuel watch threads in the forums…

    • Deal Posting Guidelines: Fuel Deals:

      Fuel Deals

Since fuel prices at petrol stations can fluctuate without warning, please post the latest observed fuel prices in the state-specific fuel watch threads in the Automotive forum and not as a deal. However, if there is a special promotion, such as a bigger-than-usual supermarket discount, or a special price with a defined timeframe for which the price is valid, then the promotion can be posted as a deal.

As the normal price of LPG is around 65-70c, I'd say this is a bigger than usual discount (almost 50% off) and/or special promotion.

        • Good question.

RAA states the average LPG price to be 69.5¢ with the best price at 58.9¢ (~15% variance). So a ~43% variance in price is above and beyond any small price fluctuations.

  • Unleaded 98.5c/L in SA?. Up here in Central Queensland (Rockhampton) we're paying $1.14c/L and that's the cheapest. What a ripoff here.

    • It's been around that price for a month straight, besides over Australia Day period (surprise). I got it for $0.92/L with a Coles voucher from the servo in Adelaide CBD a few weeks ago.

    • first world problems

    • We dream of $1.14 here in Tassie, $1.18 if your lucky, luxury. .

        And our cousins

    • Try 1.20 on the sunshine coast and not budging. So I've changed to a diesel ute at least that's only $1.

      • At least you get cheap movie tickets without having to use some "Thanks" or other ticket scheme… RRP in most places is ~$20 at Hoyts/Event.

According to Woolies Fuel app gas in Taylors Hill and Deer Park is very close to this price - 43,2 (with a 4c voucher). And it's been like that for quite a few days. Haven't checked it myself though. I highly recommend the app. You can follow up to 10 stations and that gives you 1-2 days warning before a price hike, as the prices don't go up at once everywhere, some places lead the hike.

    • To get an idea of what prices to expect for LPG it's handy to follow Saudi Arabia's Aramco propane and butane prices.

A cut is coming this month, but by my calculations we should see a minimum price of maybe 55c/L. A cut of almost 50% is extraordinary, especially when I drove 40km this evening and every station had 69.9c/L apart from one.

Prices in Adelaide are usually about 4 to 5c/L higher than Melbourne.

      • LPG in MEL is around 51cents,average price last year was about 49cents

        • That really surprises me. Looking at my records, my fills in February were 69.8 and 66.9, 74.9c in January, and 71.9 and 74.9c/L in December. All prices pre 4c discount dockets, and the cheapest across multiple brands/suburbs.

If prices were 51c/L in Melbourne in January I think a bit of price gouging was happening in Adelaide.

          47.3c at Caltex/Woolworths Glen Waverley
          49.9c at Liberty North Melbourne

          that covers east to west…

Ah yes, I did the Great Ocean Road, then Snowfields for 2 days, picked up a boat at Manheim auction and towed it straight back to SA in July. Cost me $154 all up in fuel (LPG commodore). Average price in Melbourne was around $0.48, lowest was $0.42 (then take your 4c/ 8c off that). Average price in Adelaide $0.74.

Sadly, I live within km of Santos where the gas comes from…average LPG price $0.89.

      • LPG isn't traded like oil, the Saudis just set a price each month they will sell for, and the rest of the world takes it. Not a very open market.
Looking at the prices in the link in AUD, it seems pretty clear to me the local price should be substantially lower than the 59.9c that is still seen around Sydney - although I notice a few places starting to drop.
It is not nearly as competitive as the unleaded market. I wonder what one of the stations favoured by cab drivers are selling it for?

        • Around Adelaide I would say 80% of taxis are hybrid Camrys and Priuses, with the rest being an odd assortment of Camry and Commodore LPG vehicles. There's a few Ford Mondeo diesels too. Most of the time petrol is cheaper to run when it's selling for $1/L and LPG is 70c/L, plus you have the advantage of not constantly having to manually stop/start engines when crawling through long taxi ranks.

I had my Mitsubishi Lancer converted to LPG in 2009 solely because of the $2k rebate, and because the price different was larger. Now there's no rebate, LPG has a 12.9c/L excise, and it's no wonder the LPG industry is dying rapidly in Australia. My 2009 conversion has paid for itself. Currently sitting on $2k profit. But without the $2k rebate I would only just break even… after 7 years.

        • @Cluster: I'm surprised that it is even better off. Back in the day when I had a dual fuel car I could only travel about 75% the distance on LPG that I could travel per litre of petrol. Assuming that applies for other cars, with the current price difference between LPG and petrol (this deal aside) you would in some instances be worse off with LPG.

        • @blint000:
I have a vapour injection system on my car and find it consumes 15% more LPG than petrol. On older venturi systems the losses could be as high as 30%.

  • 39.9c/L is that even legal ?

Only true OzBargain members run lpg fuelled cars..

This should be a condition of having an OzBargain account!!

Anyway, Sydney is such a lpg rip off compared to melb.. Plenty of places with 47 to 49cent lpg. Sydney's lowest is 57c.
I have also noticed lpg is slowly dissappearing from servos in Sydney…

    Somethings going on…………

    • +3

Only thing that's going on is that people aren't buying falcons or commodores any more. Pretty soon they won't be around as an option to buy at all. The market for LPG is thus getting smaller and I guess more servos are pulling out due to not selling enough of it. The days of corolla fuel bills for a big six cylinder are coming to a close - sad days.

    • +1

      Very low demand for lpg.
Taxis were big users but now they are mostly hybrid.
And without the $2000 rebate the conversion is only economical if you really do a lot of km.
So servos are getting rid of expensive lpg bowsers.

  • Ridiculous price.

  • +1

I love my Old LPG Commodore. Cheap gas is always a bonus and 39c is great, been paying around 50c in Melb. Converted to dual fuel when the Govt had the rebate, ended up costing about $300 all up and it's saved me a fortune

  • Corolla? I sold my FG LPG ute and now drive a new Mazda3 (2.0, manual, stop/start tech and etc) and it actually costs me a about $5 more to do the same mileage… Not to mention the ridiculous amount of torque it puts out. Boy do I miss my old ute :( but then again the Mazda3 pays for itself and then some with some mild uber driving

  • They're sold out as of a couple of hours ago. Went myself.
