Are there any Laptops that meet My Requirements for Uni?

Screen size: 11"-13"
Less than $700 preferably in the low $600's
CPU: Celeron N3150 or newer/better
Storage: 128gb SSD
Memory: 4GB
Weight: Less than 1.5kg
Battery: obviously longer lasting the better

The only once i can find that's decent is the dell inspiron-11-3157-laptop.

But i'm just making sure there's nothing better than this in terms of price. Uni students aren't rich. Well at least i'm not.

    Lenovo Thinkpad E460

Go to the Lenovo education store and you can get a discount. You have to register to access the education store. It's well worth it, so bare with the short sign up process.

    • Hey :) They start at around 1.8kgs, it's not too heavy but i move around at uni a lot. My previous laptop was 2.1kgs and that was a pain with all of my other things i needed. I'd prefer something a lot lighter, but thanks!

    http://byod.acer.com.au/acer/byod/index.php/travelmate-b116-…

Not anything great - but has one of the longest lasting batteries (Win10 reckons 9+ hours) and dual-band wifi, light, ssd and 3yr warranty

    Cheers

    • wow i've had a look around for ages but haven't found this. It does look promising but i don't see that many reviews, still gonna keep looking. How did you find this one by the way?

      • that looks pretty good for your needs and really lightweight too.

      • Found it when researching laptops for my kids high school, I've got 2 of them, screens aren't great but there's not much around with long battery at that price point. Figured with 3yr next day onsite warranty they'd last ok, Acer delivered within a couple of days too which was both free and quick! Review wise look for b115 as they're very similar - Acer are a pain in the ass with model numbers so they can sell "exclusives" to businesses

Watch the Dell outlet for good deals.

The latitudes are the business orientated laptops, so they might be lighter, more durable, and more expensive.

    • I've been keeping an eye on those :)

    • Yeah cheers, i've had a look, but too long have i run my OS on HDD, and too long have i suffered. hahah

We have an i5 SP3 at home but needed another for uni so mate and I went out and each got a lenovo ideapad 100S. They are really good to type on, screen isn't the best but that's comparing to the SP3. Battery lasts about 55 years on a single charge.

JB currently have it on sale at a ridiculous $229 - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/lenovo/l…

Runs full windows 10. microSD expansion.

    • Also, in some ways I prefer this to the SP3. Very portable - lightweight, opens up and types well on lap, unlike the fiddly SP3. Lasts 3-4 times longer too.

      55years on a single charge?

    • Thanks! i had a look too, I ended up getting the Asus X205 for its great reviews on battery life. Luckily TA just posted a bargain for 32gb micro SD!

If you would consider second hand you could get a better and cheaper laptop (I'm currently doing this for a sever pc), reduce e-waste etc.

Here's a spreadsheet of a few I found on eBay buy it now (although auctions would be even cheaper) and compared specs to the ones people have mentioned on ozbargain:

You also need to consider wear\tear and battery life of used items, but my recommendation is this: http://goo.gl/K6fVwc
    Lenovo ThinkPad X220, $300, i5-2520m, 12.5" (1366x768), 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD

    • Sounds really good, i had a look at a few already but my main concern is battery life with laptops with non-removable battery, my uni days get pretty long. But cheers!

Thinkpad X220 + IPS screen. E6330 is good too if you want a newer CPU. Business laptops are tanks, and the keyboard feels a lot better for extended typing. Plus, batteries for them are pretty standardized so you can buy spares or replacements. Both can be found for under $400 on eBay easily, due to businesses replacing hundreds/thousands at a time, the X220 even lower (you can find some around the 250 range, but those are the less cosmetically pleasant ones). $500 should be able to net you a decent looking one + a new battery + IPS screen (but you might not be comfortable with installing it yourself).

Or alternatively, there is a Latitude 12 7000 series for ~750 in the Dell Outlet store. Broadwell i5, 128gb SSD, 4gb RAM + dual channel Intel WLAN OR 8GB RAM + single channel Dell branded Broadcom card.

    • had a look around but nothing interested me too much, i settled for something more cheap, i5 processors are too powerful in terms of my uni work anyway, all i need is ms office video for lectures and youtube. Cheers though

  • I bought an hp 15-d004au for my wife recently. Comes with a crappy 5400 rpm hard drive, but I then bought a 500GB samsung SSD and the laptop rocks!! Total price $740
