Cambridge Audio Minx Air 100 $300 (Normally $400) Delivered at Myer Online

161

Myer online is selling Cambridge Audio Minx Air 100 (RRP $599) for $400 and takes 25% off and provides free delivery. This makes the final price $300 delivered.

I have purchased mine and just had it delivered. It does both bluetooth (aptX) and airplay (wifi). Its sound quality is very good for $300 (not as good as Minx Air 200 which has an RRP of $749), significantly better than Bose Soundtouch 20 in my opinion.

  • Hows it compare to last week's Klipsch deal? (KMC 3)

  • +2

KMC3 is a portable, battery driven bluetooth speaker. I don't think KMC3 supports WiFi (airplay). Minx Air 100's 100W Class D amplifier needs AC power.

I have not had a chance to listen to KMC3 so I cannot comment on the comparison of sound quality of KMC3 vs Air 100.

In terms of value for money, the KMC3 deal seems better.

BTW, after I purchased the Minx Air 100, Myer showed "backordered" as the status of my order. So I thought I had to wait for a while or even get my order cancelled. But Myer shipped the product the next day and delivered in 2 days.

Reasonably informative post. Would someone neg vote that? I Will + vote to counter

    • Did you get the V1 or V2 version, mime one doesn't seem to have spotify connect function, the firmware version 2012. i guess its much older stock!

      • Mine is V1 too.

        • That's abut a bit of disappointed, Myer should state the version!

This was available for sub-$200 all december until 14 or 17Jan at Myer and Minx200 was $280 if available, as Minx200 availability was an issue. Both of these , Minx100 & Minx200 were tagged under clearence item which had another 40% on top of discounted price.

This is at best mediocre speaker. NO way worth $300.

Just to put it under persepctive.

    Pros:
    -Very well built
-Good bass and that's about where the story ends.

    Cons:
    -Sounds muffled / dampened.
    -Poor soundstage projection.
-Very Very Very poor app and to top Cambridge has pulled app support for these old range speakers. So no way they will be improving on it
    -Very flimsy plastic buttons used
    -Poor quality remote.
-Cambridge audio local support is equally bad.

4-5 years back when this speaker was launched it would have been worth $300. Just like my 50' inch plasma tv was worth $3000-$4000 and awesome 50hz tv at that price ;) few years back.

Compared to Bose Soundtouch 20 its NO WAYS better. I dont want to make it an even longer comment by comparing these two, Bose wins hands down.

Rather it cant even be compared to the Klipsch KMC3. At $145 KMC 3 was an awesome deal. Klipsch KMC3 currently is $249 which still is better purchase comparitively.

This speaker is not a penny above $150 if you are feeling too generous.
Compared to KMC3 at $145, this should not be more than $100

If you are feeling itchy to spend $300 on a speaker, go for Jbl extreme at current price of $300 approx(no discount).Jbl Xtreme is a very good speaker even at no discount.

You can spend $300 on very good speakers compared to this.

One professional comparison here 3 years back between KMC3 and Minx100.

    • Thanks for the time to get all that down!

    • Actually, my intention was to buy a Bose Soundtouch 20/30. I went to a local Hi-Fi store where Bose Soundtouch 20 was on sale.

I listened to the Bose Soundtouch 20 and 30. I just could not accept their poor sound, muffled and dampened. It was just "loud". Even the shop assistant who did the demonstration agreed that the Bose sounded "awful".

I then listened to B & W A5, B & W Z2, Cambridge Audio Minx Air 100 and 200. The store was selling Minx Air 100 for $519. I found any of these sounded better than the Bose. Surprising, isn't it? I did a online search and found the Myer deal on Cambridge Audio Minx Air 100, which the Hi-Fi store was not able to match at all. The Hi-Fi store's best price was $400 for a demo unit.

Amazon is selling the Cambridge Audio Minx Air 100 for USD390-399. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00B9EV4NI/ref=dp_olp…

"What HiFi" review is expected to be more authoritative in sound systems than CNET: http://www.whathifi.com/cambridge-audio/minx-air-100/review

The Air app on ios is okay, last updated in August 2015.

Of course, none of these wireless speakers can provide the sound quality even comparable to my Infinity Beta 40 + Beta C360 + Beta 10 + Velodyne CHT10 in the living room. But the are okay for a bedroom or study.

Its in no way intended to malign ur posting of the deal. Its just a fact i am putting out there.

****Though i did find it a little dicey that u became member at ozbargain just 29 minutes before u posted this deal, and you are butt kicking bose Soundtouch30 which you cant even compare to these… but will ignore that for now****

And i hope u do realise that the review is 4 year old at £330 not even AUD$$. And is being called giod speaker at that price.

As I mentioned previously, its as good as comparing a review that said at $4000 my 50hz 40'inch plasma tv from Panasonic is a steal 5-8 years back..I hope you realise TIME is an important parameter
Wireless Speaker market today is way more dynamic and way better

-why dont you share with ozbargainers here how did you manage to setup airplay in this speaker. The procedure you underwent will certainly support my argument coz u CANNOT do it through app.

You want similar or better quality sound.
Go for this for just $99 this also is not portable but sound beautiful
        http://www.mwave.com.au/product/creative-ziisound-d5-wireles…

For the pricing part would request any ozbargainer to check with Myer if i am wrong. I remember pricing coz i almost pulled the trigger for minx200 but when i tested demo version at Myers i was shocked to see this poor quality.

          1. I enjoy checking up ozbargain (without being a member for a while) and have benefited from it. I am happy with the Myer deal so I think I should become a member and share the deal with other members of ozbargain. Is this a problem?

          2. I did not compare KMC3 with the minx Air 100. I said that I never had a chance to listen to the KMC3 and I believed the KMC3 was a better deal. — So what we are arguing about?

          3. Setting up Airplay for the Minx Air 100 is very easy. You do not even need to use the app. All I did was to connect the Air 100 to my home WiFi network by using WPS: press the WPS key on my router and then press WPS key on the Air 100. It connected with in 15 seconds. That's it! Then my iPhone/iPad automatically has Airplay option enabled. BTW, you only need the app to setup the Internet radio stations, after which the Air 100 can stream internet radio programs without a computer/tablet/smartphone. My experience is with my iPad and iPhone. I don't think you will have a similar experience if you use an Android device as airplay is an apple thing.

          http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/cambridge-aud…
          Quote from above review:
"Judged solely on the basis of sound quality, it would be hard to recommend Minx Air 100 over the eight-driver $150 Logitech Wireless Boombox or the subsequent $250 Logitech UE Boombox for most purposes. At regular near-field listening levels, Minx Air 100 performs music with the sort of flat, mid- to bass-focused presentation we’d expect when a large 4” driver is expected to replicate as much of the audio spectrum as it can without assistance"

One of these logitechs is Sub-$100 now. S715i

For Minx100 Airplay - To set up airplay you have to go into browser Type ip address of this speaker and start setting up from there. I have done it and this is the only way.
You cannot do it through WPS button.
'Its MENTIONED in your own review link from whathifi'

Very similar setup to Logitech UE AIR which again is a better sounding Airplay speaker at $139 delivered from logitech store.

        • @Jim Ball:

2 Better speakers than Minx100 and at lower than half the price - Go and Test if possible. You will see the difference yourself.

$99 Creative D5 (not D5X. D5X has DSS pairing capability with a matching woofer and other D5x speakers)
          http://www.mwave.com.au/product/creative-ziisound-d5-wireles…

Logitech UE AIR $139 AIRPLAY Speaker. Was often compared to B&W speakers when launched at $400, but could not win against it. BUT at $139, dont have to think twice
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/like/111297676074?limghlpsr=true&…

Dont bother to buy these I have seen this at a mate's place and they are not worth $150 let alone $300 (when Myer was doing sub-$200 few weeks back) Wanted to go for the larger Minx200 but when tested at Myer a month back, ran backwards dearly protecting my $280.

        • @anuryry:

Let me add my 2 cents here, given that I was in a similar position a couple of months back.
The minx air 100 was so-so and the minx air 200 was only a tad bit better.

What anuryry posted above for pros and cons are largely true. But in no way does the Bose sound significantly better (in fact in the current market there aren't any great sounding Bose speakers but that's a discussion for another day)

What you have to keep in mind is that these are small compact speakers and that is the sound you will get out of them (don't be fooled into thinking otherwise)

Everyone's listening experience/preference will be different so best to decide with your own ears. (Also varies depending on your taste of music)
But at $300 it would be hard to recommend the minx air 100
(I did buy the minx air 200 for < $280, no the sound did not blow me away but for the place and purpose this is used it does the job well)
