    Mahalo…

  • Ooh la la

    Do they bobsled there?

Hawaii is amazing mid year. Highly recommend it if you want to flee the cold in the southern states.

    • +1

Just looked at accom and living costs.
1 week Hawaii Vs 2 to 3 months in Vietnam for similar money
      Which to choose?

      • +7

Vietnam if you haven't been to the country.

      • +10

        Apples and oranges.

        • +6

          Why can't fruit be compared?

      • Go Canmbodian islands instead. Its amazing and cheap.

        • To hard to get to and a bit to "rustic" at my age.
I like my rooms to be $50 or less a night, have a lift, a/c, king size bed, lounge and full sized fridge.

        • Names? Places? Tips?

    • +5

Meh and you can also go live in a remote African village for 3 dollars a year.

      And what?

      • +2

        Ridiculous analogy

There are no airconditioned highrise apartments with ocean views surrounded by everything you could want at a very affordable price in remote African villages.

That is exactly what you get in Vietnam.
Hawaii is the same, but without the very affordable price.

        • But Hawaii might have cheap clothes that fit me, lol.

        • @Grillman: They may have clothes that will fit but I seriously doubt they will be cheap.
Vietnam on the other hand is the land of $12 tailor made shirts.

        • @Davros: Been enjoying your comments Davros/all, but I'm not fond of going to places where the population/crowds are so big.
Hawaii not so crowded, but getting more and more $$$ as the years go by. *This deal is very good as far as the travel side goes I must say.
Wonder where someone who prefers cool (not freezing!) weather to hot can go, that is safe, cheapish' and not too $$$ to get to/from.
          Not having much luck :o(

Love Tassy' and NZ but have been twice to each now. LOVE the weather/places/people but a bit $$$ to holiday in/at.
My partner and I tend to lean towards 4-5 star when/where possible but in reality should limit ourselves to 3 star and under :o(
          'Wannabe snobs' (joking)

*Would welcome any suggestions/direction folks! Sorry for longish' post!

        • @Chris Farley: Been enjoying your comments Davros/all, but I'm not fond of going to places where the population/crowds are so big.

You are going to the wrong spots then
Westerners and tourists are like sheep and hang around in the same spots.
I mostly end up in areas where there is hardly any westerners and beaches are mostly deserted.

Just got back from Hawaii last week thanks to a previous jetstar deal. Really enjoyed it.

  • +7

but our dollar is so depressing :(

    • +2

It's ~70 which is about right. If it's 40c that would be baaaad

    • +2

Just pretend the dollar was at 48c and it's now back at normal levels of 70ish and celebrate. (the parity we saw will probably never happen again unless the US economy collapses again)

      • +1

US economy will probably collapse again, but this time the Aussie economy will go down with it.

Just got back on the weekend from Hawaii, cheap airfares to get there but not a cheap destination to stay and do things, sucky AUD.

Does anyone have accommodation recommendations for a family of 5 (2 adults 2 teenagers and 1 child (under 12) in Honolulu near the beach?

    • +6

We used airbnb for all the accomodation on the main island, Big Island and Maui. much cheaper than hotels.

    • +1

I second Chris on this. I'm heading over there for Easter and all my accomodation is booked through airbnb. Hotels are very expensive. I recommend looking at airbnb a few months in advance and make a booking

      • +4

We also picked airbnb as all of them had kitchen facilities, this did prove handy in trying to save some money on meals. Most breakfasts we just had coffee and bagels in the airbnb place with the provided toaster and fridge. Also we cooked a few dinners on nights we didn't feel like eating out.

Just be aware, everything in Hawaii is almost like it's come form the 70's. The moment you step off the plane, the dated interior of the airport sets the trend. Not really an issue but just something to be mindful, some people complain about it.

Well if you choose Hawaii to be holiday destination, accom cost shouldn't be an issue for you. I'd go thailand or bali if I worry about cost.

    • Depends what you're comfortable with. I spent 3 weeks there last Summer and camped for most of it free of charge.

  • I've already booked a flight for a similar period on Hawaiian. By the time I add baggage to the Jetstar flight it's $850. Basically only ~$100 less than Hawaiian.

Now if this were a VA deal, it would be good value.

    • The luggage costs aren't $400, I think your maths might be a little off.

That said comparing Jetstar and Hawaiian is not as simple as adding the luggage, one is a full cost carrier the other a discount one. The food of Jetstar is going downhill and I wasn't happy that meals no longer include drinks, but I'd still fly them without hesitation if the price is right.

Any good websites for cheap hotels? I have friend just came back from there and a hotel per night cost USD$300.

    • +1

Take a look at airbnb if you want to save on some costs for accomodation. We did it and would go back to airbnb over hotels for Hawaii.

      • +1

Other than airbnb, are there other website portals you recommend?

        • +2

For hotels, I tend to stick to hotels.com
They do send out some good offers time to time and I've been able to redeem free nights with them.

        • Try Flipkey.com

    • Expedia pricing reflects JS sales, so you can get a package of flights and hotel with them (usually getting a discount) and the flights will be these sale fares.

    • I went to hawaii in january and average hotel price we paid was more like ~$150 USD/night for 2.5/3 star accommodation. Just type "Hawaii accommodation" in google. I didn't find one particular portal cheaper, some were better than others depending on the island you are visiting.

    • Could try https://www.homeaway.com.au/ for vacation rentals

  • Awesome deal!

My partner and I got lucky, our flight back to Sydney was cancelled so we were moved onto the Qantas flight that left a few hours later. They gave us a few days notice as well, even better was that we booked in Jetstar Business so moved to Qantas Business.

  • Been waiting for a sale to book flights. Thanks OP.

I've traveled to Asia for 25 years and even lived there many times.

Hawaii is paradise and much better than Cambodia, Vietnam and polluted Bali where you literally swim with rubbish all around you.

Yes Hawaii can be expensive but the biggest issue is the long flight duration.

I'd snap up cheap deals to Hawaii any day over the above Asian 3rd world options.

*Thailand beaches (not Patong beach) is an alternate viable option though for those is love with cheap beach holidays.

    • I'd take thailand over oahu every time tbh.

      • Other islands such as Maui and Kauai is a different story. Oahu was the least fave.

Also Thailand and Hawaii I found are very different places. If you want to enjoy the island, laid back life with a bit of American culture, Hawaii is your bet (but prepared to spend more than expected). If you want to have a cheap, relaxing holiday, but still with the hustle and bustle (depending on where you're going), then go Thailand.

        • Island hopping is very expensive - it's going to cost another AU$200+ each to get to one other island and back.

I'd agree though, I have no desire to go back to Oahu, but Maui and Kauai (my favourite) were good.

  • Thanks OP.

    BOOKED!!

    Off to Waikiki!

Just looked at comparison between Jetstar and Hawaiian - Sydney to HNL depart 23 Apil return 10 May ( looks liek heaps of seats)
current special with Hawaiian air is $866 return - looking on website there are heaps of seats
    - includes - 2 x 32kg bags, meals, entertainment, blankets, frequent flyer miles ( on Hawaiian Miles - enough for free interisland trip). If you pay an extra $100 you get return trip to island like Maui , Hawaii
    No more to pay

Jetstar advertised fare $458 - yet is really $777 when you include meals, enetertainment, credit card fee and luggage ( only 32kg) - thrown in you get the worst inflight service and treated like cattle at the airport

Give me the the Aloha spirit any day!

    • This.

Speaking from experience I would fly Hawaiian any day instead of Jetstar

    • With inter-island, their economy flights dont include baggage. BUT, if you book business class, it can cost you less than the cost of adding baggage. That's what I did with my trips, so I'm on business between HNL and ITO.

      • It never came close to being cheaper for me, so if it's not make sure you sign up to the Hawaiian frequent flier scheme for a $10 baggage discount.

And checking now, every single flight I can see charges $50 extra for first class - a bag only costs $15.

  • I wnment through 2 months of dates the cheapest return fare is Total AUD$543.83 (229/314.83)
