I can hear the professionals rushing in as we speak…

  • Just be warned my recent experience - if you nominate freedom+ plan (to get the most data) the sim WILL NOT WORK unless in a mobile phone. Not in a 3G or 4G modem, not in a tablet.

    Thanks Helstra.

    • +2

Did you check the APN as suggested?

      • no. I spent over an hour with Helstra support, the (second) guy seemed to genuinely want to get it working for me, changed the APN from the default telstra.internet to telstra.wap, neither worked. Rebooted plenty of times. Sime worked in a phone OK, then stopped working when put back in my modem

        • Well that's not good. Can't see anyone else with the same problem on WP, would expect some discussion about it if others were experiencing it. I would test it myself but i'm running a lil low on starter packs atm. What does the packaging for that sim say on the front?

        • @awoff1:

No dramas here, using "tablet" sim in a Telstra Wifi modem/hotspot thingie

        • @spillmill: the OP mentioned freedom+ plan so the fact that yours is a Tablet sim is not relevant. It depends on what plan you register it on.

        • @turbodude:

          freedom+

I had the sims in a MF90 over Xmas working perfectly.

      • +1

        I suspect it's a recent policy change

    • my case a bit strange.

i got three MF90 modems. the white one was the oldest (bought in october 15 i thnk), and always works. the black one and blue one bought in january. none would work. all three has the same firmware. BUT after telstra free sunday…… now the black and blue can work with freedom plan.

      • gaaah. I didn't take advantage of free Sunday.
Mine is a white MF90, bought in January (Auspost).

Your experience implies a setting change. When the Telstra dude suggested I change the APN, I though I was about to get it working. But no joy.

It clearly says on the packaging "mobile broadband device". A modem is exactly that.
I have had no problems using over 30 sims from all providers in modems. Maybe you are doing something wrong

      • sim works fine in 2 phones. Spent an hour or more talking to Telstra, trying different settings etc. The guy seemed to genuinely want to get it going for me, he was a good operator.

        Read moonwalk's post above.

        • just additional info, the freedom plan works on my optus modem and vodafone modem (unlocked) though. Only with MF90 i got problem

        • @moonwalk:

interesting. I thought I tried it in my voda modem first but no go, so I may try again

    • so buy a cheap hotspot-phone and call it a day?

The F+ deal is over anyway.

      • yeah, I ended up dragging out an old nexus s, but the reception was crap. I only had 1 day left, I activated 3 sims on 25th Jan expecting to go away a lot and use them (but that didn't happen, too busy at work etc). I tried them in the modem a few times but didn't have time to problem-solve until the weekend. By then there was only a day until expiry of the bonus data, but I wanted to give it to my kids to burn through on public transport to get some value for the money spent. Total 0.5GB used from a possible total ~21 = ozb fail (hangs head in shame at wasted bargain)

No problems using my sim activated on freedom plus in an unlocked usb dongle. Possibly a setting issue or your dongle is not compatible or unlocked.

      • its a Telstra 4G modem…so I guess you're right, they would have more chance of blocking it. It's not unlocked.

    • been through 5 packs or more, all activated as freedom+, all consumed via ZTE MF90

    • Effgee,

Can you please clarify how you nominated this sim for Freedom + plan?
Can we port my existing telstra number onto this sim?
Please share the process you followed for this.

      Thanks.

    • Hi can I used this tablet simcard in my mobile.? I.e call people ?

  • Yeh I got IMEI blocked on my modem by Vodafone as they said I abused their policy of taking to much free data in the free data weekends.

    • lol, gotta love marketing: free != free

  • I got the last deal price matched at Officeworks ($9.50 each) and they did not enforce the one per customer rule - I just flashed the price on my phone to the checkout person and they glossed over the T&Cs and either didn't see it or didn't enforce it.

    • probably got some kid who doesnt care, wait till you get a career checkout chick, will call her manager and kickup a stink so they dont pricematch.

      • They will at least price match one - I have never had it denied at Officeworks except on a grey import phone.
Not sure about the limits though how that works with price matches.

  • They can but too often I read cases where OW won't honor the deal

  • Can confirm that Office Works will price match and beat down to $9.50 - they also seem to allow you to buy more than one, which is handy as some HN's are sticking to their 1 per customer limit.

  • +1

Price matched with Office works and got it for 9.50, and was only given one as HN specifies 1 per customer limit, Brought other from Kmart price match for $10.

  • do we still get google play credit?

  • Sorry if this is a really stupid question but will this work in a mobile as a normal sim card? but with data only? (i.e. no call allowance etc)

  • Can someone please clarify if we can use this sim in mobile phone towards buying Freedom Plus $30 plan?
If so, can we port my existing telstra number onto this sim?
or can we transfer the credit from this sim to my existing number?

If it's possible, please help me with the process.
    Thanks in advance.

    • You can not do any of this.

  • What does this means?
"Starter Kit gives you 2GB of days allowance to use within 30 days,…"

      Prob just a typo…

  • How do I find this on the Harvey Norman Website.
it is there if I click the link above but it cant be found any other way, ie by searching for it on their website. What gives?

  • price match rejected at OW as they couldn't find it on HN website!

  • Merged from Telstra $30 Pre-Paid Trio SIM Starter Kit Now $10 @ Harvey Norman Waurn Ponds (Maybe Others?)

    Hey all,

I was in the area for uni and thought I'd give the Harvey Norman a visit for this deal Telstra Pre-Paid SIM Starter Kit for Tablets $10.00 @ Harvey Norman (in store only). The assistant pointed me in their direction and happened to find these next to them. No limit on how many I could get unlike the deal for the Tablet kits (limit of 1).

Ignore the '5GB on activation' as it expired 25/01/16.

Expiry date for the packs are 17/05/2017.

Let me know if I've missed anything. Thanks !

  • The direct link works fine as I stated. What I don't understand is why I cant find it if I go to Harvey Norman website first and try to search for the deal. It appears to be a hidden link. Office works refused to price match as there was no way to find the deal by searching directly on the HN website. Will just go to HN on the weekend do no issue. Just curious as to this oddity.

Take it too a Telstra shop and they will swap it.

      • +1

Whoops I let HN take it all off the shelf.

  • Hi can this be used as normal mobile phone sim ?

    • The first one I got was activated as a $30 freedom plus plan, so yes, it did for me. The most recent I have activated as a mobile broadband sim, but had the option to activate it as a phone sim.
