Always thought "Lady Fingers" was an unusual way to describe bananas and somewhat rude.

    • +2

      You must be bananas.

    • "Lady Fingers"

this one time at band camp……. oh wait… wrong movie….

  • +2

    This deal is just bananas!

  • Surely must be a pricing error?.

Bet it's meant to be $1.10 or $2.10 /kg or some thing like that.

    • Nope we purchased 2.5 kgs for 25 cents , they had boxes full under the display too and another crate out front with same sign.

      • +2

        Well that's just insanely bananas.

I wouldn't have thought 10c/kg would even cover their freight costs. Sounds like a loss leader.

They are probably losing money if people come in and only buy the bananas alone.

        • Freight from Nth QLD to VIC would be about $300/space… or roughly 30c/kg

Wholesale a retail grade banana like that would be around $13-16 /13kg ctn this week.

        • @jg86tsv:

Well then it's a loss leader for sure. As i said if people only buy the bananas and nothing else then they're losing money and lots of it. They are hoping people will also buy a heap of other fruits at full price to make up the difference.

          @hollykryten:

Well then it's a loss leader for sure.

Or they ordered too much and they need to get rid of them before they go off.

        • @jv:

You don't sell at 10c/kg just to clear some stock. Makes more sense to waste the stock and claim the loss against taxable income.

        • +2

          @jg86tsv:

Why not? If it also gets you some publicity at the same time that you offload stuff you can't sell after tomorrow.

They are probably radioactive or something.

        • +2

          @Thrift: maybe theyre ebola-nanas?

        • @Thrift:

          japan growing bananas now?
or are these old left over soviet cold war bananas?

        • +1

          @franco cozzo @nosdan:

Bananas are naturally slightly radioactive, more so than most other fruits, because of their potassium content and the small amounts of the isotope potassium-40 found in naturally occurring potassium. The banana equivalent dose of radiation is sometimes used in nuclear communication to compare radiation levels and exposures.
          - Banana

the radiation exposure from consuming a banana is approximately 1% of the average daily exposure to radiation
          - Banana equivilent dose

        • @Thrift: learn something new etc… ;)

        • @jg86tsv: These are Melbourne grown bananas. 😉

The sign says "Product of Australia", but could mean just the sign is product of australia ….

      • Its not legal to import bananas to Australia. Thats why they are normally so expensive compared to in other countries.

  • +3

    Cool bananas!

    • +3

i think they are just room temp ones actually.

  • I wish I was in the town of all these bannana specials… Anyone else coat em in chocolate and freeze for a snack.

  • +8

The thing is, this place is in Frankston. It's not worth the risk of getting stabbed just to get 10c bananas.

surely you should have been able to get them for 68 and owed them one?

  • +3

    10c a kilo…?!

this banana deal sounds really a-peeling!

    • +2

      Megalo! Megalo! Megalo!

  • Peanut butter on toast. Add sliced banana. You're welcome.

    • Peanut butter on banana bread

  • For the people who buy heaps of the bananas, how do preserve them to prevent them to go off?

    • SO²

    • Freeze them and then you can use them in smoothies, baking or to make one-ingredient-banana-ice-cream.

  • does any one in melbourne know how to make brandy?

Just tried to buy a box from here 10 mins ago.
A sign next to the bananas reads "One box per person"
Ok sweet I will just grab one then. Picked one up and its empty. No staff around.
But it doesnt matter because I can see a full box under the next one and I am sure they wont mind as long as I put the empty boxes back on top.
So I grab this full box of bananas and place it in my trolley. I am just reading the side of the box to see how much it weighs and a staff member comes over.
He begins to explain that I am not allowed to grab one of the boxes from the display and I need to ask a staff member if I want a box. I thought that is fine, fair enough and I felt a little embarassed for doing the wrong thing.
But he doesnt stop there keeps repeating that I have done the wrong thing by grabbing a box. Im am just like "ok sure can I get a box then" and I hand him back the box that I grabbed. He is like "yep" but is still lecturing me about grabbing a box from the display.
It reminded me of when I was 15 getting told off for making a mistake by a stressed out boss or teacher.
After like the 4th time of him telling me I can't just grab my own box of bananas I said "sorry I didn't" know hoping he would stop and just be like thats ok I will get you a box. But no he kept going.
I get it - maybe people keep ruining the display by doing what I did but he even said we need to write "ask staff member for a box" becuase how are the customers to know considering there are full boxes of bananas sitting right there. Maybe this whole banana sale is causing them to lose money and stressing this dude out. I dont know what was going on but he wasnt happy at all or friendly.
I couldn't actually sit there and cop it any more and I had to leave.

I know stupid long story about my banana purchasing experience but I had to share. I remember before christmas this place had bananas for 8cents a kilo. It was awesome I told everyone. Im not sure if I will ever go back.

    • I wonder if it was the same guy I saw on boxing day getting yelled at by the manager? We still have bananas in the freezer from the boxing day (5c a kilo) deal. Turned up and saw some old guy hobbling around, looked like he threw a disk in his back or something. Manager was going burko cos the old guy might sue etc.etc.. those boxes aren’t light.

  • +1

i was stuffing the little bags full of bananas until a staff member suggested i could get a box instead…
i then had to ponder if i should get 2 boxes and if i could carry them both to my car.
but decided i would save some for everyone else, even though i saw some dude take a shopping trolley full of boxes haha, but i think after that they realised it should only be one box per person which is understandable

    • +2

very fair of you….most ozbargainers would have cleaned them out and had them listed on gumtree for $1.00 kg by lunch :D

  • Wow that's cheap…
How much is the cheapest flight from SYD - MEL with 40kg baggage

    • hands off…theyre ours :P

  • Send them over to Perth - that's even cheaper than SpudShed would sell them for.

  • +1

Cheers. Bought a 15kg box for $1.50. Not sure what to do with 15kg though. These are refreshments for my business so can claim a tax deduction for the $1.50 too.

  • These have likely been rejected from Coles or Woolworths and so they have ended up here. I know the logistics of bananas all too well unfortunately! The grower has lost out big time here.
