    it increased 79 cents..

    • +12

Yeah, bought it for $0.20 in their last offer but still, it's worth $0.99. So customisable, kind of makes me feed sorry for iPhone users sometimes.

        • +3

You mean customisation. That is what this offers, not necessary functionality, but personalisation to preference.

Great thing about iPhones, is that from the first to the last version, they all look very similar and work the same way too. Which is a bit strange that the uniformity of users experience on the iPhone is something Apple have historically made fun of the PC experience for.

        • +1

Key word is reasonably. Get no customization, is more expensive, accessories are more expensive, you are locked into a single phone company and tech, and it operates reasonably stable. Sounds awesome.

        • +7

          @FabMan:

          You mean customisation

There isn't really much need to customise the iOS interface. It just "works" - you can customise the wallpaper and move the app icons around, so what more do you need?

NOTE: I own and continually use numerous phones and tablets, on both Android and Apple.

I find the Android experience a lot more inconsistent, unreliable, laggy, slow and generally limiting in me doing what I need to get done. There are more things about Android that I hate, especially how the Apps take over the OS and slowly strangle it. I really hate how Android crashes all the time, and also I hate the outrageously poor (and inconstant) battery life on Android devices.

All my android devices have larger screen and have more powerful hardware than the equivalent iDevices. Yet I generally will grab the iDevice first. It's just a far nicer user experience.

People who have only used Android will probably never understand. I am no Apple Fanboi, but the only thing that I find inferior is the purchase price. Then again, a BMW or Mercedes costs more than a Hyundai.

          @OnlinePred:
Don't forget Rightous Leader Apple protects us by deciding what you can and cannot do on your phone, or buy on the store, including the removal of books, movies, games and more. Censorship is such a benefit.

          @llama:
Are any of your android devices a Nexus or pure android Moto though? Other android devices are an abhorrent sin against Durate's will. I never get any crashes on my nexus or moto's, terrible experience with the galaxy s6 though.

        • @llama: People don't need to paint the walls of their home, or add any decorations but they do.

Nova is a different layout to the launcher that is on the Android phone by default. You started going off about other Android features for whatever reason, I guess despite your thinking you are an Apple fanboi as you started defending Apple and attacking Android phones outside of the launcher experience this product is designed for. As for the default Android experience, that is what a Nexus is for, nearly every other company modifies that experience.

I personally like being able to set my phone up for my tastes. Using widgets for emails and calendar, newsfeeds from sources I choose, the weather on the home screen, time of two different zones. They suit my needs for my work and my personal life. Having that customisation option is a benefit, one you can choose to have by buying or not. Apple deny their users that option, because… control?

        • @RI4V4N:

Are any of your android devices a Nexus or pure android Moto though?

Yes, have a couple of Nexus devices. The Samsung phone is awful, like you say.

        • @llama:

For starters, if I had one of the Plus models, I'd want 5 columns of icons instead of 4. It seems like a really poor use of space to have 4, just like the tiny 5S. 5 dock icons too of course. But I understand that that level of complexity is just a little too much for iPhone users.

        • -1

          @dazweeja:

But I understand that that level of complexity is just a little too much for iPhone users

That's not the point. The reason that people love iOS devices is because of the overall "quality" of the interface, and the consistency of not only the UI but also within the apps, etc. Of course it's not perfect, but there isn't any great pressing need or even the expectation amongst iOS Users that they need to change things like icon grid spacing.

Remember, most people's experience is with "non-pure-Android" devices. They use an LG android phone and it looks, feels and operates completely differently to a Samsung, which both operate differently to almost every other brand. The lack of consistency is annoying, and with consumer devices most people just want it to work, and not have to phaff about when they try to use it.

To most people, a mobile phone or tablet is a commoditised consumer device like a fridge, TV, washing machine or whatever. They see absolutely no need to customise (say) a fridge, and providing that the shelves can be adjusted and it operates properly as a fridge, then they are pleased. It's not about having low expectations, and more about "who gives a 5h!7"

To those people, the fact that the Android Fridge allows customisation so that Coke bottles can stored upside down in the place where the vegetable crisper was installed, providing that the user searches for and must install some abstract accessory kit (that must be researched and becomes known almost by word of mouth) simply doesn't have any appeal whatsoever. The users PREFER having the drink bottles in the door, like they are on other fridges of the same type, and where the bottles have been stored in all previous generations of the device.

So, whilst Android allows the customisation of all manner of things, the average iOS user doesn't see any need at all to do that kind of stuff, nor have they got the time or inclination to fiddle about with those kinds of things. They buy the iOS device because they like how it works OUT OF THE BOX, and that they do not have to twea it… and in fact they will pay considerably more amounts of money to not have to deal with the "Android experiece" and any potential ability to customise that comes along with that.

Irrespective of whether you agree or not, that's the bottom line. I am trying to share some insight into why this occurs, and why Apple is so damn successful at doing this stuff. It's not about iOS users being stupid or sheep or whatever… they are more likely to be more mature in their thinking about the priority or need or desire to customise what is, at the end of the day, a bloody common domestic appliance.

The Android guys scream "but Apple doesn't allow customising" and the iOS guys say "meh, I couldn't care less, it's a mobile phone not a Hyundai Excel that needs to be customised because my mum gave me for my first car" :-)

        • @RI4V4N:

          Censorship is such a benefit

I guess they consider that the inability to delete an icon is a small price to pay rather than exposing themselves to the potential privacy and security risks that come along with the world's largest and most insinuous data maining company having access to every single thing that they do.

Apple might restict a few things in order to ensure that the whole thing is kept tight. Google will give you a bit more flexibility with their stuff providing that you let them have absolutely 100% access to your personal stuff.
          - Doesn't sound like much of a benefit to me.

        • Hey, I think it's awesome we live in a world where we have the choice, and especially the strong competition to keep pushing the innovation.

Having worked at a big retailer of both Apple and Android products, the number of people who came in specifically wanting to buy an Apple for the "quality of the interface" would be 0% if I rounded it down. It's about the same percentage of people who want to store beer in the crisper upside down.

We got about the same amount of tech issues with iOS users as Android. The number of people swapping from Android to iOS and vice versa was about the same overall, and their reasons were pretty much the same. Why? Because on one thing you're right - mobiles are now a commodity item. Most people just want to make calls, text, read Facebook, and do a little web surfing. For that stuff they both work out of the box, and the similarities far outweigh the differences.

        • @llama:
They actually remove books and apps that they don't believe if in with their family values.
It's not just about keeping it tight security wise obviously (which is more a myth than something that actually works btw).

        • -3

          @surethang:

Having worked at a big retailer of both Apple and Android products, the number of people who came in specifically wanting to buy an Apple for the "quality of the interface" would be 0% if I rounded it down

Yeah, I worded my rant poorly. What I meant is that people probably tend to choose Apple because they know what they are getting, rather than the minefield of options that comes with Android.

Most people just want to make calls, text, read Facebook, and do a little web surfing. For that stuff they both work out of the box, and the similarities far outweigh the differences.

Precisely, they just want it "to work" and they have no interest is customising.

I am the "techie" in our household, and I maintain all the portable devices, the laptop PCs, server, media library, and get caught helping other people too. I'd rather buy a router with decent firmware that can do what I need straight out of the box, rather than getting something that is "customisable" then install WRT or Tomato or whatever firmware. So I buy Asus high-end routers because they do what I need, and I do not need to waste time "customising" things.

Same with phones and tablets… none of my own Android devices are "customised", and I don't even have custom wallpaper on the lock screens because I couldn't be bothered. There is far too many other things for me to do, I am not sitting there bored and able to spend a week researching on google and forums, then another 3 days to get my mobile phone's icons all aligned properly.

So, I don't care if the Samsung phone costs $100 or $600 or $1200… if it needs customising to do what I need it to do, then I just discard it and buy something else. That's why I have many iOS devices… they just "work", and the ability to customise rates about 0.0001 of a scale of 0 to 100 in my care factor.

  • Been using the free version for around 3 years, bout time I bought Prime.

    • +3

Congratulations. Your phone is now powered by the allspark.

    • +2

should of bought it when it was 20c, still good at under $1

  • +11

Paid full price for this ages ago but still worth it heh. Great price.

    • +8

did the same no regrets! same with textra premium version bought it as soon as they released it

      • Textra + Nova Launcher stopped me from upgrading from my LG G2

      • +1 to textra. Barely a day after trying the free version I had bought the full version.

        • +1

i had used it long before it had ads, the second i did I purchased it

      • I can't seem to figure out what Textra does that is above the native HTC texting app?

        • I couldn't tell you, seeing as I don't have a HTC phone. But I like it cause it is simple, fast, and has plenty of customization. It's miles better than the stock Samsung messaging app (from my S5) and the LG one too.
It's nice to have a consistent messaging app no matter what phone I'm on.

    • Agreed i paid full price about a year ago, and i dont mind at all! Normally hard for an OzB person to say but if something does what you want without a fault and yoi have used it free for years before that then its the least you can do.

  • For most people I still think the Google launcher is better, runs at 60FPS and is free. Nova Launcher though is still quite nice.

    • +1
      • +3

I've never seen that site before but 108 votes and 60 votes isn't a very good sample size. Nova is rated .5 a star higher on the Play store but I think the end users are different.

My comment was merely a point regarding options those for that don't feel like paying.

        • +2

Well Nova has a free version that has more features than the Google launcher, so I don't see that being a point in Google's corner.

I gave the Google launcher a go a while back, and what you see is what you get. There's no customizations which is kind of the point of getting a launcher in the first place.

Slant is pretty popular with making polls. I've tried finding other sources comparing Nova and Google launcher and I'm not finding any luck getting a result that puts Google launcher in favor over Nova. I literally tried searching "Google launcher is better than Nova launcher" and my results bring statements like this: "I'm finally a convert to Nova Launcher, and it's much better than what Google has done.".

Nova can be made to look and feel like Google launcher, but you can't make the Google launcher look or feel like Nova.

A few other sources from polling and tech journalists putting Nova as being better than Google launcher.
          https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS6/comments/3bol53/what_launc…
          http://www.androidcentral.com/google-now-launcher-revisited (look at the comments).
          http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-6/592174-nova-…
          http://ausdroid.net/2014/05/05/google-launcher-sucks/

Seems pretty overwhelming that Nova is the preferred launcher over the Google launcher for most people using Android, between those who have tried both.

        • @c0balt:

Nova is great at what it does but if you don't need to customise GEL is a better option.

        • @DrStinge: Unfortunately Nova has a really bad cult following. People will immediately jump on the neg button if you criticise it in anyway ;)

        • -1

          @c0balt:

          In your opinion.

        • @stemcell:

Not just my opinion. Poll based.

Nova is subjectively and objectively more functional and popular than GNL. I provided sources and it would be great if you could do the same.

        • @c0balt:

          Everyone knows polls are unreliable.

    • +1

I agree. I'm not heavy on customisations and setting Nova to look exactly like the Google Launcher on my Nexus 5 is a pain. Icon size and the grid for example.

  • Has been my main launcher since I got my first Android phone and still use it to this day. Well worth it to support the developers if you've been using the free version.

Have to admit though, I too waited for it to reach this price before paying for the Prime version as it was pricey for a while.

  • Wot? I just bought it for the full price 2 days ago. Well it was with Telstra credit from a $10 pack anyway.

  • love the screen lock widget/button!

edit: for those who can wait, it will probably show up for 20c again as app of the week… probably a long wait though.

  • -1

My All time favorite is Aviate Launcher (free), but sticking with Nova Prime as I have bought it in the previous deal :-(

  • Been looking for a launcher light on resources which has some good customization options. Bought a few sales back. Never been bettered imho (and i try lot of different apps regularly).

  • Had this for yrs, paid full price. Can't go back to google.

  • I paid full price with telstra credit. Great deal.

  • Would be perfect except it lacks the one feature I want, which is sorting the app drawer by Most Used.

    • +4

There is an option to show frequently used apps in top row.
Nova settings -> App & widget drawers.

  • Thanks OP! Will try it out as almost everybody likes it

  • Noooo - paid full price 2 weeks ago! Great app though even at full price.

  • I can vouch for Nova Prime. I've been using for a few years. Simply the best launcher ever

  • +2

Don't think - just buy it.

  • Never thought/known what a launcher is… Clearly, I don't need a change.

Now on OnePlus (Oxygen?) if that changes anything.

99c is 99c, and I've got a TON of free credits, so I'll give it a spin.

    • 99c is what you make it!
99c could be made into millions if respected enough.
      99c is not just 99c
      Random rant over

  • Worth every cent

  • i have to say that this launcher is the ONLY app i have paid for full price out of my own pocket for.

imo it is the best launcher and well worth supporting as the updates never stop rolling out and its gets better with age.

  • Serious question. What are some of the Prime features? Been using the free version for years. Can't think of a good reason to upgrade. Not sure what I'm missing.

    • +1

The full list of features are in the link and your probably not missing anything at all if the free version has served you well.

Then again, it's a small fee to pay those who've continued to provide it to you for free.

      • It's Google who make the money, the devs get pittance sadly.
If you feel charitable, contact them via Twitter and ask of you can send them money @TeslaCoilSW

        • How much does Google take? Despite Google (or Apple) earning a commission from sales, I'm sure most developers wouldn't make apps or at least stop supporting them if they weren't in some way profitable.

I wouldn't classify somebody as being charitable if they're paying for something they're actually using. Especially if it's one dollar.

        • @cheepo: Google take 30% of the sale cost.
Yep hardly much, but the discounted rate its at means they not only get less but lose 30% of that.
if someone was being charitable they would pay them (Devs) the amount additionally that they thought the product to be worth.

  • +1

Any effects on battery life etc? Does phone need to be rooted?

    • 1) No
      2) No

    • Any effects on battery life etc?

Probably not, providing you don't change the settings.

Does phone need to be rooted?

      Most launchers don't need that.

Fundamentally, Launchers are just an alternative "theme" - an aesthetic change that doesn't generally alter the underlying operation of the device. However launchers also may give access to settings, features and capabilities that are hidden by the standard launcher.

I run Google launcher on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3. It's far nicer and more modern than the horrid Samsung crap interface. But because it is a launcher (rather than new firmware) there is absolutely no changes to the way that the phone operates.

      • OK. Looking for a way to put calendar across the top as a single line. Hopefully will do it…but Telstra services are currently down..can't use credit to buy. #100# doesn't even work. How long at this price?

        • OK. Looking for a way to put calendar across the top as a single line.

That doesn't really make sense. Do you mean notifications of calendar events?

        • @llama: yep, that's it. Also, will this allow me to remove the Google search bar at the top of my Xperia?

        • @tunzafun001:

Sorry, I cannot answer those questions. You might need to check other forums.

You could just install the free version to test it.

These launchers are very much like an app, the change made is not permanent…. so you can install it and then switch back and forth to the original using a toggle in Settings Menu, or you can uninstall the new one completely

        • @tunzafun001: Yes, just long press and choose Remove.

I put Smooth Calendar in place of the Google search bar on mine. Might suit you too.

        • @drunk:
On the Xperia, when I long press and delete the Google bar, a scroll bar replaces it. Hopefully Nova launcher will get past this. Cheers for the tip.

        • @drunk: Hi, everything about Smooth calendar was perfect, except it doesn't mention the actual day on the calendar. Also, I'd prefer the calendar in Agenda mode where I can scroll up and down between past and present events. Smooth Calendar only lets you scroll the events on the day. Business Calendar only allows you to scroll between the current day and future events, but wont let you scroll up to see any events/ reminders you may have missed.

Anyone know of a calendar like Smooth Calendar (google bar shaped) that shows the day, date, time, event that scrolls in agenda mode?

  • Love this launcher, has been my favourite for years!!

  • -2

From what I see it changes your launch screen from looking android standard, to an apple ios like layout, or windows desktop slash mac desktop layout, or a windows phone layout with various effects between.
    Cool

    • Since when did iOS have widgets and app drawer in their layout or have 4x5 icon layout? I'd say it looks like Google now launcher more than anything when you stay with the default layout (which would be "Android Standard" if such thing exists in Android).

Also I doubt you could make it look like metro layout as far as I can see. No live tile or any tile like icon where you change individual icon size etc.

      Didn't beg you BTW.

  • Does it work for Cyanogenmod?

    • Yes. It'll work with pretty much any device that's ICS+

  • Can someone tell me that this subscription is for lifetime or if i change my handset i will lose it?

    • It's attached to your Google account. I don't believe it's subscription based so you own it for life. I've used Nova since I had a Nexus 4 and I've migrated since to Nexus 5. You can even import your settings to your new phone.

  • Hands down the best launcher on Android, tried them all keep going back to this, worth the purchase get it

  • +1

I always thought Nova launcher is one of the best launcher. For 1 dollar, prime version do offer a lot. That said free version is good as is already.

Prime version offers more animations, unread count badge and more gesture options (like two finger swipe up, etc). It also allows you to change the size of the icons more. It's worth 1 dollar imo but I know there are people who'd not really require the prime version and be fine with free version.

  • I tried using Nova on the Oppo R7s instead of the ColorOS launcher, however the ColorOS weather clock widget cant be found when in Nova - any ideas how to use it?
    Cheers

    • Some manufacturer apps can't be used in 3rd party launcher, I assume it's the case?

      • looks that way. I will try the ColorOS experience for a while in that case.

        • Or you could try third party apps (I use Xperia Digital Clock or something similar to that for weather/clock widget).

        • thanks for the suggestion!
