Giro Synthe MIPS Bicycle Helmet Limited Edition (Black and Orange) - $309.80 Delivered @ Strava

60

It's one of the most expensive piece of crafted polystyrene you can buy but it's now on sale. I was shopping for a lid and came across this.

This is the newer MIPS version that supposedly sells for north of $400. Only available in this colour. All three sizes available atm. There is a 20 % off sale on the Strava shop at the moment which brings the price down to $309.80 delivered. I haven't bought a helmet from them before but it appears you can select the Australian version which should come with the Australian standards sticker.

yeah it's ridiculous… I could get a dyson vacuum cleaner at this price.

      • +1

I could get a dyson vacuum cleaner at this price.

        That sucks

  • is this called Bargain!!

  • Explain how this is more protective than the 8 Dollar foam helmet from Big W.

    • +2

Some people race bikes if you didn't know

    • It's like people buying Chinese brand phones that are technically similar to more famous brand name ones but significantly cheaper. YET, people still prefer to pay for the well known brand.

      • +2

It's a form of protection that we have to wear, but it doesn't mean you have to wear a crappy uncomfortable slab of plastic just because it passes safety standards. People riding 4-5 hours would appreciate something aimed at comfort, air flow and safety, it will make for a much more enjoyable ride. What price do you put on that, I guess some people would put $300.

      • Phones and helmets are a quite different. Helmets are protective gear, and some of the cheap stuff like from 7-Eleven for $5 that jv linked are actually not protective at all. That said, ~$300 is a lot of money for a helmet.

At this price I would want a bike included

Please ignore my ignorance, but why would I (or someone else) want to spend this much amount on a helmet? This is not satire, I am serious. As I understand, any helmets sold in Australia, have to conform to certain standards. What makes this particular one so special?

    • +2

It's because of the name. Why else would a pair of shoes from Nike cost $200 vs a pair of shoes from Kmart that cost $20

    • +2

See my answer below, helmets have to pass a series of minimum tests to mee the AU/NS standard. This helmet has some additional safety technology beyond the requirements of the standard. For those of us where it matters, this helmet is also very light and comfortable and allows air circulation on hot days. If you are only a casual cyclist it is probably overkill. it is probably only meant for cycling enthusiasts and racers, hence it being on the Strava webbsite.

    • I came off my bike this Tuesday hence shopping for a new brain bucket. I've always had a Giro because I like their design. They look nice (helmets, shoes and everything). Needless to say I would buy another one from them.

Yes, there's a lot of marketing spin in the cycling industry but in general (e.g. phones, cars, vacuum cleaners etc.) you pay for the design, quality and comfort. All helmets sold in Australia meets the standard but that's the minimum. These lids fit better, lighter and have well designed vents.

      • Hope you are well iSamurai, I've come off before and destroyed helmets, not fun!

        • yeah, I'm fine, thanks for asking. I lost some skin but I'm back on the bike now. My kit is pretty much done though :/

If you buy this, you will go faster, and if you go faster, you will be KOM!

This is a Multi-Directional Impact Protection Scheme (MIPS) helmet. Aust Standard sets a minimum series of tests a helmet must pass to meet the standard, presumably this helmet can pass much greater tests and better protect your head. Description here: http://www.mips.technology/ Official explanation:

"MOST HELMETS ARE TESTED ONLY BY DROPPING THEM VERTICALLY ONTO A FLAT SURFACE. MIPS TECHNOLOGY IS THE HARD-EARNED RESULT OF OVER 19 YEARS OF STUDIES AND TESTING BY SOME OF THE WORLD’S LEADING RESEARCHERS AND BRAIN SURGEONS. BECAUSE WHEN YOU FALL, YOUR HEAD USUALLY HITS THE GROUND AT AN ANGLE, CREATING A ROTATIONAL FORCE THAT LEADS TO STRAIN IN THE BRAIN. WITH THE MIPS LOW FRICTION LAYER INSIDE, THE HELMET CAN ABSORB MORE OF THAT ROTATIONAL VIOLENCE, ADDING BETTER PROTECTION THAN HELMETS NOT EQUIPPED WITH MIPS."

    Some explanations here: http://www.bhsi.org/mips.htm

The actual manufacturer website with a cool diagram: http://www.giro.com/as_en/mips/

For mine it looks like the external bit of the helmet can rotate independently to the inside bit. If your head hits the ground at an angle the reduction of the twisting force to your neck and head might help protect you from injury.

If you are the sort of person that rides a $150 bike along the bike paths to work this might not seem like much of a deal. If you are the sort of person that clocks 300 km a week on a carbon road bike worth $5K+ then this is indeed a pretty good deal. Something light but safe, what's not to love! Is a cheaper helmet but bigger risk of brain injury a better deal? If i was in the market for a helmet I would probably buy this.

      This sounds great.

Having fallen off bicycles and motorcycles multiple times - I'd say unless you're wearing a motorcycle full face helmet (but even then…), your chance of getting injured or killed depends on luck. Ie. hope that your face or head does not hit angular pavement and generally sh!ts that are not flat.

I categorise bicycle helmets just as safe as open face motorcycle helmets. Better than nothing!

But having said that, at this price range I'd rather get a POC helmet :) More bling and swisshy

  • Yep… looks like a bike helmet… complete with polystyrene interior for maximum shock protection….. even has an adjustable strap.

But… this whole MIPS thing is a little more interesting, but they dont tell you at all what it is (poor marketing by that site really).

The GIRO site they link to describes MIPS….. why dont they just say that on the STRAVA site??

  • Keep magpies away?

To save all of the confusion for casual cyclists, if you've never heard of 'Strava' before and dont have a Strava account, this helmet is probably not for you and you wont understand why it is so expensive. If you dont own any lycra then just keep moving on through.

  • +1

For the price I expect this to be a smart helmet.

  • If its expensive, its gotta be good! Probably makes you cycle faster too. Deal!

People's inability to understand that people have different needs is baffling. Yes, just because you don't ride a bike often and can get away with slapping a $5 KMart helmet on your kid and sending them off hoping they won't break a limb doesn't mean there aren't people that don't need something more serious.

    • Understand this. This product is on special at 3000% more money than an acceptable legal alternative. At the very least this needs some SERIOUS explanation. Otherwise I think it's safe to conclude that they're marketing directly to clinically insane.

Lps, How many times have been on a 200Km+ ride on a hot day (35+) that takes 8 hrs+ in the saddle? I do it a few times each year and I would not like to have to do it with one of the $5 helmets on. My current helmet is a Bontrager that cost me around $180, I bought it as they give a replacement guarantee that if you crash and damage the helmet they will replace the helmet free of charge. At no stage in the selection process did I consider any of the 7-11 helmets or any of the K Mart helmets, I value my comfort and sanity too much!

      • yeah there's in deed a lot of marketing, but you must know that you can get a $50 vacuum or a $500 dyson, a $15k car vs a $50k car, a $100 phone vs $1000 phone etc. they all do the job, but you pay for the design, functionality, build quality and so on.

just for the record I didn't get this one because it's not my favourite colour and it doesn't doesn't match my bike either haha :) The last helmet I bought was the Giro Aeon from Bikes.com.au which was $230, so I'm not so keen on paying any more than that.
