Why Are Ted's Cameras Increasing Their Prices by 8-10% for The 20% eBay Tech Sale??

Hi all fellow ozbargainers

First post ever on the forum so please be nice to me ;) I have been looking for a good mid-high telephoto lens for my SLR maybe a 70-200mm f2.8 Sigma or Tamron and I heard about the 20% tech sale from ebay yesterday on ozbargain. I then went on my ebay account and was watching 2 lenses hoping to buy one when ebay fixed up the code. One lens was a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 for $1199 and the other being a Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 for $1299. I wanted to buy one of the lenses today because they finally fixed the code but noticed that Ted Cameras have increased their prices by a $100 on each lenses today when ebay fixed their code??!!! Is this common practice?? Why did Ted Camera's increase their prices when there is an ebay deal??

    Everyone does it.

    • Everyone may do it, but it is not legal and ACCC tends to chase them down and fine them when reported (e.g. the recent Kogan example)

  • +6

Because they want to make more money. Simple as that.

  • Yes common practice for stores to increase prices during an ebay sale. Why? They like making more profit. It sucks but sometimes you get lucky when some stores forget to strategically adjust prices. When this happens you will most likely see the good deals appear here on the front page

    Same price on March 1

    So, where's the problem?

  • +14

Like pulled beef, its a scam

    • +2

I hear you love pulled beef

      • -2

Cmon mate…sure you can do better than that if you really want to start an argument!

  • Spacebace i check both lenses yesterday at the Sigma was $1199 and the Tamron was $1299. They definitely put up the price today by $100. Sneaky but it sounds like everyone does it. I just thought Ted's cameras would have done the right thing instead of putting up there prices like this.

    • +4

Or they were on sale, and they aren't on sale now? So rather than 'put up their prices', their prices went back to normal.

On the 6th March (IE 2 days ago) the Tamron was the same price it is today.

Ted's "Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX DG OS HSM (Nikon)" 'Buy It Now Price' was last changed on 13 Jan 2016 17:23:05 AEDST.

Ted's "Tamron SP AF 70-200MM F2.8 VC USD - Nikon" 'Buy It Now Price' hasn't changed since it was listed on 4 Mar 2016 00:28:49 AEDST.

The more I think about it, the more this sounds like someone working for the opposition that wants to badmouth the company.

Only worth reading that link if OP was actually correct in what they're saying. They're wrong so there's no point arguing about price fluctuations.

    • Pot is illegal, but me thinks a few on this thread are smoking something. Price changing people maybe you need to clear your cache? Prices may have altered maybe not? there seems to be a lot of hearsay. Just do your research then decide to buy or don't buy.

I purchased from Teds a few days ago with eBay discount saved about $1600 so I'm happy with Ted. One item was slightly cheaper in Dec 2015 but could not buy it cheaper ATM even from grey market imports. Would I buy from Teds again sure if the price is right why not? They phoned me the very next morning confirmed details sent my order out the same day.

Outside of this $1039.96 eBay deal, if I wanted that Sigma lens I'd message dcexpert and politely offer $1059 sans bonus SD card. Apparently fulfilled and supported directly by reputable importer CR Kennedy.

(Although I'd probably first ask for a price match against Ted's 20%-off.)

  • +4

    Who buys from teds???

    • +2

If Ted's has the best price, who wouldn't?

    • +13

This is OzBargain, not OzLoyalty. Hope this clarifies.

  • This is common practice during any 'sale' whether online or in store. The idea is that the retailer advertises at X% off, with the small print saying "off original price", rather than discounting the current (pre-sale) price, which is almost always well below the original price. The ethical thing to do would be for stores to show the discount as a percentage of there current pre-sale price, but there is little the customer can do, aside from arming yourself with knowledge of the market price — as often as not, the discounted sale price may be higher than the current price at another retailer. Large retail chains are adept one thing more than any other — exploiting customer ignorance.

    • +2

but they didnt increase the price going by comments above.

    • +4

But we've already covered this, the retailer in question hasn't altered their prices for the sale! They were the same up to 2 days before the sale

      • Are you saying that their pricing structure would be adjusted 1 or 2 days before the "sale"?….I'd be more interested to see pricing a week or 2 weeks out when they would have been aware of the upcoming sale date!

        • +5

March 1 - Same price as now

And has already been shown 1 price hasn't changed since March 4, when it was listed, other hasn't changed since 13th Jan.

While it's all well and good you want proof to make sure there were no price changes, it's all a wild goose chase as it's the OP who claims they changed the day before/the day of the sale… which is untrue.

        • Yup point taken and agreed….it is just that I hate the practice of price adjustment before sale which, as we all know, is rife and widespread, but my ire was misplaced, in this case, obviously.

  • We can only guess that someone from Dick Smith has found a new job.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/169562

  • Is this the same Sigma lens? This probably won't help you because DCW doesn't have an ebay store (I think?)… but without the ebay code, this place is usually cheapest.

    http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod6758.htm

  • Cos they only want you to have a 10% discount

  • Well, bought the tamron 70-200 f2.8 last night with 20% off and it was $1,129.91 delivered, still the cheapest brand new local stock, no complaints here.

Why Are Ted's Cameras Increasing Their Prices by 8-10% for The 20% eBay Tech Sale??

someone has to carry on Dick Smith's legacy ;)

  • I am not Teds fan, but feel like they don't need to increase price for this sale. eBay cover the 20% sale by giving it to buyer as voucher (minus to grand total of your purchase). Teds end up still receive the same amount of money.

For example the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 VC at the price of $1299.95, buyer pay $1129.91 (after the 20% discount), but Teds will still get $1299.95 as the 20% discount provide by eBay not by Teds

    • But they can get $1399 during the sale if they put the price up.

  • Nutri Ninja with Auto IQ was supposed to be $159.2 after 20% coupon code that came out first and it was mentioned in my post which was later unpublished because deal was suspended. By the time new coupon code was released they jacked up price of it to $249.00 which leaves the total price after coupon code $199.2 (And this was the original advertised price before the second coupon code was released)

It is still being sold for $199 at Harvey Norman

    • +2

"•This Auto-iQ Blender uses a 1000W motor to break down fruit and vegetables completely to unlock essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids trapped inside the cell walls of your ingredients."

      LOL

  • It's sad to see some people accepting the increase of prices because it still currently the cheapest price for local stock. They are basically taking moeny that you should because they think they can. I hope they get fined as kogan. I am going to report them to accc :)

  • +2

Nice to see that OP has gone quiet… Finally realised how wrong you are? :)

    • +2

This happens all the time during eBay sales. People throw accusations of price rises with no proof.

Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong, but all the time they only focus on the products they're interested in while completely ignoring the tons of good deals that are around, then loudly proclaim the whole sale a scam, and all the sellers are scammers.

  • +1

At least they didn't pull down all their lenses during an eBay sale like they've done so in the past.

  • Welcome to Australian retailing. Enjoy your stay.

I have actually just called up the ACCC about beacon lighting doing the same thing.

The lights I wanted were $29. On Sunday they raised the price to $35, which is the same time they started a promotion to get 30% of your second light when you buy two.

According to what I read on the ACCC website, it's misleading.

I'm waiting on the ACCC lawyer to call me back tomorrow.

    • misleading? they can changed their price anytime anywhere

      don't waste my tax

      • +2

        Don't waste our oxygen.

      • I don't think it's right that they bump up the price of an item then have a sale the following day trying to tell people it's on special when it was actually cheaper the day before at its normal price.

Beacon did this to 43% of their 120 products.

        • The question is, are you sure the previous price was their normal selling price? Did they have another special just before the sale?

What we need is camelcamelcamel for all stores.

        • Yeah, I have wanted these lights for about 3 months. The normal price was $29, they had 5% off last week, which brings them down to $27.55.

Now they are $34.95 with a equivalent of 15% off.

  • they feel like it

  • Bit strange but I checked the tamron 70-200 f2. 8 (canon) lens first thing morning (7am) on Ted's camera website and they put the price back down to $1299! Checked the eBay site and it was still $1399 :( just went back (8:30am) to the Ted's camera and they changed their price back to $1399?

    • did you buy it or get a screenshot of it?

I'm actually interested to see given that I looked at the above Item Revision Details links and it says that there's been no changes…

      • You should have a look at the price history for today. I'm not sure how to do it but I'm sure if someone did it on the Ted's camera website they will guarantee see a price chance for today

        • Thrift posted these links earlier and I can't see any changes in price this morning:

          Tamron: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemRevisionDeta…

I don't know too much about it, but it makes me wonder if there's any way to manipulate the Revision History.

        • +1

@bobbified: Gordon84 is saying the price changed on Ted's website, not the eBay listing (where the price stayed the same), so no Revision History revision required.

It's a non-issue if Ted's website price is different to their eBay price - there are different costs associated with eBay sales.

        • +1

          @Thrift:

Aaah.. my bad.. didn't read properly!

  • +1

In the uk they dealt with this dodgy practice years ago, the item's special price must also show the lowest price its been on sale at during the previous year. So you can see if they've jacked up the price.

I know what some replies will be; I should go back to where I came from or stick my head back in the sand. That's the way it works here and why nothing changes and we still get ripped off.

  • This interesting they have the Sigma lens for $1090 on their website now but still $1299 on ebay??

    https://www.teds.com.au/sigma-70-200mm-f2-8-ex-dg-os-hsm

    • Meh, $1299*.8 = $1039.20, still cheaper, what exactly are you waiting for if this is the lens you want?
