  • Anyone have any thoughts/opinions on the quality of Vietnam Airlines? Veeeeery tempted by this.

    • +2

I flew with Vietnam Airlines 3 years ago and paid around $1200 I think.

I thought they were pretty good, the food was really nice, though I do like Asian food and am partial to spicy food. They did have western options too.

      We got caught out though…
We planned a stop over in HCMC on the way back, we organised single-entry visas for that stop, but for some odd profanity reason when we flew to Paris the flights went:
      Melbourne to HCMC
      HCMC to Hanoi
      Hanoi to Paris

And our single-entry visas were used up in that changing of flights. We were then extorted somewhere around USD$100 each to re-enter the country for our 3 day stop-over on the way back to Aus.

      • Same here but the Qantas (on behalf of Vietnam) Melbourne airport staff knew a guy to get us a addinitonal visa on the spot cost $200aud each!

Also they can be inconsistent on their policies… We had 5 flights as part of our itinerary & the last one the decided to charge $200 for taking bicycle on the plane. After complaints to the head office in AU got that one back but in my opinion wasn't worth all the hassles.

    • I found the food better than most airlines, actually, especially if you like food with flavour. Most of their planes are pretty old but service was fine and leg room was better than Emirates/Qatar but that usually goes without saying. I found them better than expected.

I just checked and on most dates Air France operates the Vietnam-France legs, so you'll be certainly happy with them. Also, looks like you can get a stopover in Vietnam for less $100 extra (+ visa, of course), so that's worth taking advantage.

      • VN now use their brand new 787s and A350s on their European flights :-)

  • Ahhh … when I look at these prices !!! I need a flight on on the 19th December to Germany … So far there was always a great deal such as this one - but at Christmas time I think I will struggle to find something cheap. :-(

I was flying Vietnam Airlines once to Europe … not bad but not great. They had long stop overs … ( 6+ hours - not sure if this is still the case).

    • Thai Airways flies into Munich and Vietnam Airlines flies into Frankfurt, so you might want to try flying to those airports & then train/fly to your destination.

      • Frankfurt has a great train connection (as the long distance train station is directly at the airport and it's in the middle of Europe to get anywhere you want) and Vietnam Airlines is cheap and ok. The stop over in Ho Chi Minh City was a bit too long for my liking (I think I had around 7 hours 2 years ago and decided to do a one week holiday in Vietnam instead - as the flight was so much cheaper (like this deal it was a free holiday).

Unfortunately I need a flight over the christmas period this year (19th Dec to 13th Jan) and I doubt there will be any deals available … so book early and get the cheapest fare is the best for christmas time.

        • Something like skyscanner might help you :) although the cheapest flights definitely have long connections. Can't get this cheap but maybe down to $1600 return?

        • @em:

Thanks a lot … skyscanner is great. And also Kayak.com.au and hipmunk.com (and of course iwantthatflight.com.au) … at the moment the cheapest is $1650 (with one leg on Air China, the others with Lufthansa and Cathay - stop over in Hong Kong for 2 nights on the way back - one ticket is for under 12 so a bit cheaper). I think I can't get much more discount than that over christmas. So you are pretty spot on with your prediction of $1600.

Always crazy to pay so much more when I know I can travel for the prices mentioned here … just at a different time. Ah well … (means just no 4K TV … better spend on experiences not things!)

        • @mini_wombat: Yep! My partner and I are thinking of going to Europe over Christmas so I've been tracking the prices, just not sure if it's worth biting the bullet now or if there might be cheaper prices coming up through a sale. I like the idea of stopping over in HK myself as I'd love to explore the city and yum cha is one of my favourite things!

        • @em:

Yeah … that is my problem. The flight I found is a reasonable connection (just a 5 hour stop over in Beijing and Air China on the first leg (but it's a night flight and you don't need to care about service and food that much … anyhow sleeping). The other legs are good and fast connections with Lufthansa and Cathay.

For $1650 not that bad over christmas … might still go a bit cheaper but I doubt by much … the risk is higher that it gets up in price in my opinion.
The price with the stop over is around 200$ cheaper than any direct flight to Europe I found … so adding a stop over makes it cheaper. I always try the typical stop overs in Bangkok, Seoul, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing or Hong Kong to get a better deal. As it is charged in USD there is another variable to consider … (as the AUD got a bit stronger in the last weeks but doubt it lasts long).

I haven't seen good deals around the christmas time … prices usually stay the same until August/ September and then just go up closer to the date.

        • I thought that said you had a stopover of 7 hours and 2 years… and I thought geez that's long. Trying to imagine seeing a mini wombat in an airport too. That would be quite a sight!

        • @illumination:

          haha … wouldn't mind a holiday that long :-)

  • BTW i hope they lifted your restriction on posting these deals. You are a major part of my travelling lifestyle haha

  • vietnam airline doesn't fly from perth……

  • Why is it cheaper from Melb than SYdney, when Sydney is closer ?

    • +1

      Airport tax?

      • Well Brisbane is the highest, explain that.

        • not sure why I need to explain this to you. Anyway common sense tells me airline put the price based on; airport tax, demand, competition, events, type of aircraft, travel distance, etc.

    • That"s probably due to the landing tax for airplanes.
Also distance is not an issue.
For example I fly from Melbourne to Cairo (distance 13,957 km) ,the ticket ll cost me 2800 $ (with Etihad airways)
flying from Melbourne to London (distance 16,893 km) ,the ticket ll cost me 1800 $ (With Etiahd as well)
I can fly from Melbourne to London and on the way back ,i can get a free ticket from Abu Dhabi to cairo as a miles reward.

      • -1

Your not really comparing apples with apples. Im guessing the Sydney -> Paris and M -> P market share is basicaly the same. Melb -> Cairo and Melb -> London are not really the same.

    • Sydney airport taxes are the highest, I believe.
      EDIT: Beaten, twice!

    • Lol wut. Do airfares go by distance as a primary indicator for price now??

      • In a rough sort of way

        • +3

          Rough, I guess.

What did you mean SYD is closer btw? SYD is further from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok than Melbourne is.

        • @illumination:

and from Paris for the that matter.

        • @illumination:

I have t checked but the difference in distance would be at most less than 3-4% which is far less than the price difference.

        • @zappy32:

Melbourne is 200km less than Sydney to Paris. Something like 16960 vs 16760 which is less than 2% difference. Given the total distance who
          Cares !!!!

        • +1

@ninetyNineCents: As you said, it is only a rough indicator.. Don't think that just because it is 3-4% closer, the price difference should therefore only be 3-4%..

  • Fantastic deal looks like the family could be going O/S this year!
Any idea how long the deal runs for?
    Thanks IWTF!!
