Moto 3rd Gen vs Samsung S4 vs Sony M4 vs LG G3

So Im looking for a new mid-range reliable phone for dad. It'll be an upgrade or….side-grade from the slightly broken Nexus 4.

I wanna make use of the eBay 20% off, so the phones that I've bookmarked are:

Moto XT1550 3rd Gen for $268 (after discount)
Samsung S4 $319
Sony M4 $287
LG G3 $345 (non-local stock)

While the LG G3 is nice, I think it might be an overkill since the user won't be playing games or any heavy usage, but then again its only $25 more than the S4. Also, the G3 is not local stock!

I'm leaning more towards the Sony M4 and Samsung S4 due to NFC and possibly better camera?

Any advice?

  • How about a Nexus 5X? Using Big W gift card, you can get it down to $405.

It'd take far far longer to become obslete, in terms of software update (it's newer model + it's a Nexus) and in terms of hardware, out of all the options you've listed.

    • Great idea but there's no big w open now. I'm pretty sure the promotion ends today.

      • I'd still think $450 is not that much of an investment for a phone that could last you far longer than others.
That said $100 is a lot, so your choice I guess.

  • Have u seen this G3 from eBay? This seller seems okay and I have been watching it for a while. I'll definitely go for the G3 over the rest, the big screen, 32GB storage and great camera are ticks for me.

    • I've seen some similar listings, from sellers that I haven't heard of. One thing I'm not sure about is that that is a 850 version, not 855. As far as I know, 850 is more suitable for the US, while 855 should be fine with all Aussie Telcos.

      • 855 is the version for Australia so check freq bands.

  • G3 has nfc. Camera is good too
Battery life no as good as a Sony but ok.

What size screen does he want.

    • Big is good, though he's happy with the size of the nexus 4 (that's 4.7 ) .

      • One thing with the G3, although it's a great phone the screen is fragile. Ours have broken twice, one was while sitting on the ground the phone slipped out the pocket. Yep sitting on the ground and it fell all of 100mm. Screen cracked and although it looked like you could still use it, the screen only responded to touch on half the screen. $200 later it's got a new screen.

  • I got the Moto XT1550 3rd Gen during the last 20% off offer. Its a bit bulky like the samsung S3 but otherwise works pretty good.

For the low price you get waterproofing and decent cameras and latest android 6 marshmallow (phone comes with lollipop 5.1 which u can do an over the air upgrade to 6.0 once you get it connected to Wifi or 4G) and is likely to be upgraded to the next android when its out.

So unless you are planning to root and install custom firmware, the other models will be lacking in the software department which may affect how well the newer apps run as they will be optimized for the latest android operating system
