I'm Obese and Need Two Tickets!

Hi,

As the title suggests 🍰 I'm obese and would like two tickets when travelling (I can fit in a domestic flights seat without a seatbelt extension).

The purpose of my travels is to visit a relatively cheap place so I can have a suit or two made at a tailor.

What are some cheap places to travel to where it isn't going to cost an excessive amount to purchase two return airfares - am I gong to be better suited in waiting for some sales?

I know I can get two return tickets Gold Coast to Singapore for roughly $800 via Flyscoot however they don't seem to have any reputable and cheap tailors!

Looking forward to constructive and criticising comments.

Cheers.

Oh crap, I forgot it's 2016 and everything is off limit for jokes.

You better check your privilege, bra!

        • -7

          As a demi-queer tri-gendered trans-fat pandakin, I have no privilege to check.

      • Nah. Dad-jokes are timeless.

        Bad… but timeless.

    • Sue Sylvester is that you?

    • Is that suppose to be funny ? Because I didn't laugh

      • +7

        I don't think we'll ever get a beer together, so I don't think it matters ;)

    • +2

      Haha, gold!

  • +45

Looking forward to the OzBargainer style "I'm skinny and can share a seat with another skinny person, especially if attractive" posts. :)

    • I'm excited!

      • +20

        Big Kev, is that you?

  • Troll level - low!

    • +67

I'm not trolling, I'd rather make light of the situation to beat all the online bullies.

      • +8

I'd rather make light of the situation to beat all the online bullies.

I see what you did there :)

    • +2

Have you any ideas though regarding my question?

      • +5

        Hmm, Jetstar to Hoi An?

        • My research was showing indication that Hoi An was a good place however no direct flights.

          Bangkok have direct flights.

        • @Mittervi: I was going to say Hong Kong then I remember they quoted me a bomb to get a suit made.

        • @tomleonhart: Hong Kong was my first choice when researching but then I gathered it's more of a tourist thing in regards to how the operators run the show.

        • +2

@Mittervi: Oh trust me they aren't for tourist. Some of tailor are amazing.

Sam's tailor in Nathan Road made suit for prince William !

        • +6

@Mittervi: You dont fly into Hoi An, you fly into Danang, 20 minutes up the road.

        • +7

@Mittervi: I flew to Hoi An (Danang) via Kuala Lumpur with no hassles. Hoi An is a great destination for tailoring - I'd love to go back! As a UNESCO heritage listed town, it's also gorgeous.

The bigger companies also take photos of you and detailed measurements so that you can make future orders online.

        • @tomleonhart: who's Prince William ? Never heard it, we are living in 21st century, still having King,Queen,Prince,Princess ? lol

        • +1
        • @Marcsie: LOL, do we really need to google things for you?? Back to school. As long as it's a bloodline thing, they'll always be around.

        • +1

          @tomleonhart: what I try to said, there's no King,Queen,Prince,Princess ect …B••• S••• We are all equal :)

        • @Mittervi: bangkok and probably anywhwere in thailand is agood option. Vietnam is good toobut you need to get a visa which adds to the cost.

        • +1

@Mittervi: hey mate, I was just in Hoi An in July and was quoted $100USD-150 for a silk cotton suit. Well worth the trip as Hoi An is very beautiful but if you just want to get a suit made (without tourist tax lol) you'll be able to find good tailors in Saigon who will do it for half the price of Hoi An :)

        • +1

          @tomleonhart:

Sam's tailor, is nothing special, have had suits made from them
but not worth the premium over a good Bangkok Tailor.

        • @Marcsie:
Not sure which planet you are from, but here on Earth they actually still exist :)

        • @Mittervi: Da Nang is the airport. Seems to be the third biggest region in Vietnam. Either way, get one to HCMC or Hanoi and then a domestic flight should only cost $40-60 per seat, each way.

You should've done an AMA before bombarding us with this difficult question. We need time to get a feel for your lifestyle. Hopes, dreams, credit-card details, that sort of stuff.

    • +2

      What's an AMA?

      • +1

Ask Me Anything. People come from worlds over to ask you all sorts of questions.

      • +11

        Its Hindi for "Mom"

        • +1

also… ama = A traditional Japanese pearl diver, typically female

and From Sanskrit अम ‎(ama, “disease”).

        • -1

@Baahubali: but Sanskrit is not in Japan

        • +1

@OzzyOzbourne: As a matter of fact, most of Japan's Buddhist vocabulary, which has given names to many well-known secular concepts and places, is indeed from Sanskrit. An obvious example is Zen (禅), which comes from Sanskrit dhyāna, via Chinese.

    • +1

Never mind I just googled it, is that a Reddit thing?

      • It can be, it's been done here too.

        • Well what would you like to know?

        • +6

@Mittervi: I'll start with my most pressing question; credit card details? Got a few impulse purchases I need funded.

        • -1

@Mittervi: Only kidding of course. If your topic question is serious, perhaps.. Hmm.. I'm not sure. The above suggestion seems decent.

  • +3

I know you can get custom shirts made, I am sure there must be a website to order custom suits. This would be cheaper than 2x airfares + accommodation. You could get measured at an alterations place and then use the measurements to order online.

    • I've bought tailor made shirts online before from pickashirt.com however they look like dresses on me!

      • +1

I too am fluffy and have had a good experience with everythingbespoke on ebay (about $40 a shirt). Also, Andy from a timless tailor based in HK comes to a few cities in Oz every two or three months to measure people and go through style and fabric swatches and ships it to you a few weeks later (about $90 a shirt and $500 a suit)

  • +10

Bali? No shortage of tailors there that you can negotiate with.

    • This. Decent quality, good prices, especially if you get two or 3 made.

Seeing as you can take the piss out pf yourself, and i mean no offense or trolling, why are you so fat? Is it a gene thing or do you binge on a bucket of kfc and 3 litres of coke each meal?

      • +12

        why are you so fat?

Apart from being pointless your comment isn't very subtle.

        • +4

Dude already alluded hes ok with it, thanks for stating obvious - dont get hung up on a single word

      • Why am I so fat? Most likely the high amounts of sugar in the food we eat today. As much as I'd love to eat a bucket of KFC I can't as I have CD.

        • +12

Sorry to hear that mate, all the best with your ongoing battle with your weight and hope you find some nice suits..l also hope youll need to go back to get more made in the furture coz the ones you are about to get are too big :)

        • +2

Sorry to here. Goodluck on health outcome. From family experiences ensure you have good medical providers that are prepared to look at comorbidity issues as one health disappointment may lead to or be a result of one or more other conditions. We learnt the hard way that size creates a predisposition for some medical doctors to blame life style rather than medical even if you bring up other things happening.

        • +1

          @Mittervi:

could try hookworm for celiacs.. there have been studies on this.. nothing conclusive to say it works, I think the studies have only been for a couple of months with a small sample pool to check for feasability/side effects. certainly it's a lot easier to get hookworm infestation in asia than in australia.. so while you are overseas perhaps consider picking some up?

(i'm being tongue in cheek but i do hope there is a cure soon for celiacs/crohns/IBD/allergy soon.. unfortunately the immune system is probably the most complex system in the known universe)

        • Not to sound rude, but you have pin pointed the problem for 99% of obese people.

Why is it that you haven't tried to make a lifestyle / diet change even if ever so gradually?

          I'm genuinely curious.

        • +2

You mean in the foods YOU eat? You have the choice in what you eat, take some responsibility.

        • +2

@jewsavings: what you say is true, I don't know why you're all downvoted (apart from maybe off topic). The cure for coeliac disease is a glutin-free diet which can be perfectly healthy, and coeliac itself does not cause obesity so it shouldn't be blamed.

Anyway back to talking about cheap tailored suits!

  • +9

FWIW, you don't have to be big to be in this situation; one of my skinny mates is a serious misanthrope who always buys two tickets anyway, just so that he doesn't have to sit next to someone and/or make chit-chat with strangers.

I'd also rate the tailors in Thailand better than Bali/Indo, but that's just IMHO… ;)

    • +5

+1 for your mate, please ensure he gets it

    • Would that actually work because the second seat wouldn't be checked in and so it'd be a no-show… On overbooked flights there's a possibility that the seat may be taken.

      • +4

AFAIK he's always booked & paid for two adjoining seats, which are both allocated at check-in time, so that side of things has never been a hassle.

IIRC there was mention that they did try to put someone in his paid empty seat once…that didn't go well for the staff at that time, and he's very direct with them upfront now.

Think of it this way, he's paying for the privilege, they've accepted fair payment on that basis, they really don't have much of a choice…I would say exactly the same thing if I was in that position…overbooking is their problem, not his! ;)

        • I've never actually booked two seats before. I would for an international flight though.

        • -5

You can look at it however you want, if the airline doesn't specifically allow the purchase of two seats for one person then they're fully entitled to put someone in that second seat if they want to - whether you checked in for the fictitious person or not!

I'd hope they wouldn't if they could avoid it, but I guarantee they're not going to offload someone so you can keep the empty seat!

        • +11

@callum9999: Use some commonsense here…You book, you pay, you check in & tell them what you're doing, so they clearly allow it; thus that seat is yours to do with as you please. Frankly, I've never heard of an airline that doesn't allow it.

They're not 'offloading' anyone, that seat is effectively already filled by a paying customer…period!!!

That's the problem with people nowadays, you're all so afraid to stand up for your rights that you just let others run roughshod over you… it's perfectly OK to just say no & stand your ground when you're paying for a specific service; FFS, sometimes you've just gotta cowboy up! ;)

        • -2

Airlines don't work on "common sense", they operate on a list of rules. One rule being that many of them will knowingly sell more tickets on a plane than there are seats. If you've bought two tickets but only one person gets on the plane, unless you've booked with an airline that let's you buy a second seat for yourself (I know AirAsia does) then the system will allocate "your" second seat to someone else if they need the space.

You aren't necessarily buying seats, you're buying boarding passes. If a boarding pass isn't used (i.e. only one of them is scanned) then the "person" loses the seat assignment. If you would prefer to just guess at how it works and choose to revel in ignorance instead, then more fool you.

    • +2

A hoodie, headphones and mask/sunglasses would make a great investment for your friend :)

    • +2

some air asia flights that dont fill let you pay to have a empty seat next to you for $50~ or either side for a bit more..

  • +4

My suggestion would be Hoi An first, then Bangkok or Phuket second. I looked around last time I was in Hong Kong and Bali, but didn't end up purchasing as I didn't think they offered good value.
Have you considered local options that use off-shore labour to cut costs?
I have seen https://www.institchu.com/ mentioned, and I have noticed a few tailors/alterations places in Sydney advertising made to measure suits cheap which I think they produce the same way.

    • +3

There are a few like that, another is Joe Button. They have people measure you in Australia and the suits are made overseas. May be cheaper than the 2x flights.

    • Hoi An is good, huge tourist area with English speakers everywhere. Multiple tailers per alley in the old town. Can be a little more expensive than elsewhere, but they wont rip you off apart from slightly higher fees.

    • Hoi An for sure. Make sure to look around and barter but they have amazing tailors and very cheap

  • +1

Why not contact a tailor in Vietnam and offer to fly him to Oz to measure you for suits. He goes back and makes them and posts back.

    • +1

That's a good idea! What are the chances of them agreeing?

      • +2

Free ticket and a bit of cash money for their trouble. Plus your going to get a few suits made so added bonus for them.

If some one offered to fly me to another country to do my job then I'd go.

        But who can say.

        • +7

Honestly, if I was the tailor, I wouldn't take the offer.

Sounds dodgy as hell if you ask me.

I think some HK tailors actually have this kind of service where they will fly over a few times a year to do measurement for their clients… not too sure which ones though.

        • +1

          @ProjectZero: butbut its australia.

Then again, a cheap and good tailor probably wouldn't do it. One that has the confidence to travel to a country with a different language for freelance work has probably done it before and might not be cheap.

        • +1

          http://www.atimeless.com/en/overseastour_footprint.php

Here's one that was mentioned earlier

    • +2

I'd take the offer and not go back if i was a tailor in vietnam!
You don't need someone to fly over an ocean in order to take measurements. Just get someone here to do the job, pay him $50 for a 10 minute job if you are generous and email your order to the guy.

      • lifehack

Edit, oh so that's how bold ;)

    • +2

You may just get a tailor for life….living in your shed/driveway etc

      • +7

I'm not saying no to that, may end up with a wife.

        • +1

This is probably the best option. Go to hoi an - find a tailor/seamstress who is single - free tailor for life.

    • Why not just sent your measurement and have it posted.
