Help...need a phone around $400 (or lower) ASAP

Hi guys, any help would be great-I'm not too educated about mobile phones. I only changed from a push button phone to a touch screen 12mths ago! I need to purchase one asap. I think I need one with more than 8GB, or the option to have a memory card. I use the phone often, mainly talk/text, OBing :), emails and basic internet (no movies etc). I'm never far from a charger, so batt charging frequency not overly important. Warranty is essential-so AU stock. Currently use both Lumia 435 & 520-I like their features eg size etc-but had had so many probs with them actually working. Can do around $400. Also, any advise on a good store to purchase from-would be great if a store around inner Melb, but not essential-can be online store. Thanks heaps guys

mainly talk/text, OBing :), emails and basic internet (no movies etc).

Every phone can do this. Your crappy Lumias fit the bill, for the most part.

Apart from the basics, what would you like from a $400 phone?

Currently use both Lumia 435 & 520-I like their features eg size etc-but had had so many probs with them actually working.

Can you expand on this. What does not work?

How familliar are you with the Windows Mobile operating system? Depending on your tech-savviness a Windows phone device might actually be better for you than an Android one. They are far simpler but the downside is that they have barely any apps.

Or you might even want to spend extra and get an iPhone (the preferred choice for first-time smartphone users).

    • Thanks for all this, I prefer a standard (if there is one!) size screen. Other than that-I don't really use the camera, have no preference re battery as I generally always have access to charging. Waterproof etc is not important, nor appearance.
Re my current Lumia's-they both have been through the process under warranty of being repaired, replaced and now have had confirmation of being refunded. Major faults. I'm also in the process of negotiating compensation under ACL. Maybe I am just god damn unlucky with them.

      • I'm also in the process of negotiating compensation under ACL

        Good luck

        • Cheers for that. My 520 is 16mths old, and cost $79 (refunded this week) but the more ppl who exercise their rights, the greater the potential for 'fit for purpose' products etc to be produced.

        • @HMK:

You got your refund, how much compensation are you expecting?

        • @ozhunter: We are discussing around 100- just the costs incurred by myself as a result of the faults.

  • Do you mind if it's carrier locked? Are you with one of the big telcos (Telstra, Optus, Voda) or a cheaper one?

Have you looked at what's available in the pre-paid phones at Coles & Officeworks locked, unlocked? Officeworks says if each phone takes a microSD card (almost all android do).

    • Thanks for this. I'm with Telstra. But would prob prefer an unlocked one. Yeah, I have researched heaps of phones. I've also read a lot of comments and forums. I suppose I am just confused, but have been really impressed with the OBing communities comments about past deals etc, so trust any input.

I use the Moto G 3rd generation. Great phone for the price. $250.

    • Hey, thanks for that. Will check them out today

  • check out this thread on low cost phones- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/239300

    • Thanks, had already read that entertaining thread. Put a smile on my face-the good old days! Now just getting older…and stupid debilitating anxiety/paranoia dictates my behaviour! Have kept that in mind. Cheers

  • I recently bought an Asus Zenphone Laser 2 for about $300. It's a decent phone for the price. Removable battery, 16GB memory, memory card expansion/2nd SIM card slot.

    Does an ok job.

    • That sounds great. Cheers for that, appreciate it. Will search that out.

  • LG G4.if you don't want to wait for sales or price drop, its still above 400$AU(Grey Import). Around ~425$ I guess

  • What I bought. Telstra Y5. Perfectly sufficient for phone use and porn. Around 3.5GB free space, can install 32GB microSD card.
