AskOzb: What's something you used to buy high quality of, until you tried lower quality and decided it wasn't worth it?

Credit to Scrimshaw for "AskOzb". This is the reversed question of the recently popular one here and on Reddit.

  • What's something you used to buy high quality of, until tried lower quality and decided the difference wasn't worth it?

And/Or

  • What's something you used to squander on, until you decided it wasn't worth it?

    Women?
Fruits and vegetables: crooked carrots, knobbly pears, wonky potatoes, curled cucumbers..etc They taste perfectly fine even though they are not perfectly shaped. They are cheaper too.

    • +2

Where do you get ugly veggies for cheap? They're all the same price at your average Coles/Woolies etc

      • Woolies for one
Edit: I also sometime buy stuff from NQR.

        • Well there you go. I've never seen these in store!

        • +1

@johnno07: Binks has likely discovered that cheap and wonky scare cats just as effectively

His one-eyed car, Darthie, left him at one point.

          Possibly cucumber-related.

(Didn't neg, Binks. Probably should have.)

      • +1

buy from fruit and vege shops NOT inside shopping malls. They don't pay huge lease fees and as a result are cheaper. Example is recent bananas are only 60c/kg at local fruit shop, at Woolies its like $1.50-$2k/kg.

        • 60c/kg is below cost at the moment… They overbought and cleared it as opposed to throwing them in the bin.

    Tissues, $1 tissues are fine

Cars. They're all money-pits eventually. Get something with cheap, plentiful, readily available parts.
Oh, and easy to work on without needing a hoist for basic stuff.

    • +1

Go Mitsubishi. Made in Japan, reliable, but still competitively priced and has some western influence/style. Reliable as hell though - look at all the Lancers and Tritons still around.

Whenever I see a car broken down at the side of the road, it's usually a ~10 year old Ford/Holden. If you do see a Japanese car, it will be a Toyota/Mitsu/Honda that's over 30 years old.

      • +1

Had a Lancer for 6 years - can't tell anything bad

      • Can confirm. Hit a Triton with my Nissan. Triton was fine, my Nissan was written off.

    • Apparently Toyota and Honda cars use parts which are switchable between models. Also a reason they are more likely to be stolen but if you live in a good neighbourhood or have a lock up garage you should be fine.

i buy many things second hand. so many people buy expensive furniture items and then have to sell them a month later for a lot less money and near new condition. just have to be smart about checking the item before paying.

The beauty of gumtree, sometimes even free furniture

      • +4

Yes Gumtree — I scored a free engine/transmission last Friday.

        See above about cars :/

      • Can't complain about free furniture, but when sales are on they match Gumtree. You have to be really lucky with Gumtree to find what you want.

    • +1

I've bought furniture 10% of the original price on Gumtree. The people that have spent the original $5000 on them generally have a lot of respect for their things too, so the condition of some things has been amazing.

      • They could have done things on those furniture.

Don't check with a black light.

        • Glass dining table, and leather couch, cleaned them first anyway :P

Or they could have filmed thousands of people doing things.

        • in some cases, ignorance is bliss!

  • Pro-quip fuel containers, supposdly the best around but went back to basic after a leaking lid ruined clothes, boots and a holiday… Mind you, there was a claytons recall, ie retail staff where supposed to replace the lids with a new batch sent to them. If proquip where genuinly worried about it they should have replaced the lids themselves!

  • Vacuum cleaners…full circle…gave up on the cheapest and bought a $$$yson…when it blew up 5 weeks out of warranty, bought a 2nd hand 4 year old Kirby Sentria off the 'bay ($350)…haven't looked back since.

  • biscuits. Seriously most of the Coles home brand taste identical to their Arnotts counterparts…. Especially the scotch fingers.

Mum used to buy the SmartBuy Cola (was about $1 for 2L). Tasted pretty good. Too bad they discontinued it in WA…. The other coles branded Cola is horrible though IMHO…. Coca-Cola or nothing for me.

Aldi brand food and other items.
Used to be against Aldi about 2yrs ago and always boughts expensives eggs and items in their catagories until my Girlfriend moved in with me. She took me to Aldi and it all changed.

I love their Wednesday and Saturday Specials now

      • Oh no!
        How did you find out?
My Aldi posts gave it away?

      • +3

I hear Aldi is sponsoring their marriage. Aldi branded wedding cake, Aldi decorations, Aldi wedding dress, and even their reception is held at the Aldi HQ carpark.

        • Don't forget Aldi Marqee tents

  • Oral B floss action replacement brushes. Used to buy originals at $6 each til got a batch which fell apart after 2 weeks of use (got money back for unused ones). Now buy generics and find they are just as good and 1/10 of price.

  • All the basics like sugar, flour, salt, soap bars and tissues, tinned corn kernals woolies brand and baby carrota too…etc

    Lasagne.

Beats every restaurant lasagne I've ever had too.

Its not bad but you must go to the wrong resturants. Anywho home made is still best, add ham boiled eggs salami into the layers. You will not regret it.

      • +4

Whats a ham boiled egg salami?

        • Lol your just trying to be smart right? Ham, boiled egg and salami…

Calabrian style lasagna has eggs Nd meat ect through it, or so my Nona said. Anyway its amazing if done right.

    • +1

These go toe-to-toe with my mum's, I couldn't believe it. Ready Chef from Coles is $10 on special fairly often too. Add grated cheese before baking, so good.

    • Have you tried aldi lasagna? My heart aches from your comment.

      • Nope. Do they only have one type? I will get on it.
There are about 3 different Woolworths / Home Brand branded lasagnes. Only the linked one is excellent - have you tried it?

    Mixer taps for commercial use.

As these products represent a micro fraction of our operating cost, I use to pick out the most expensive. I've recently gone for industrial grade stuff. Doesn't look as good but only by a marginal difference. The machining and finishing of the internal components are far superior.

The industrial grade compared to designer is about threefold difference. The industrial grade stuff is 1/3 the price.

  • Men's Dress Shoes for work (office job).

I've found you should either go high end $250+ or cheap end (<$100).

Shoes for around $100-200 may look slightly nicer but generally wear out just as quick as sub $100 pairs.

I've had a $180 pair that lasted 3 months. I've had a $70 pair that lasted 12 months. I've got 2 pairs of $300+ shoes that are 5+ years old. Money well spent.

    • +2

You sound like my mate. He used to buy the average shopping mall shoes ~$100-200 and called me a snob for not even bothering to look at those shoes.

This is until he pointed at my shoes and asked me how much my "new" shoes cost. They were just pampered earlier but they were my regular rotation shoes for the last 7 years (worn 4-5 times a week). Cost me $300 in 2006.

It is retired now, rest its sole.

      • Hey tshow, what brand was it? Cheers

        • +2

The one that lasted 8 years with constant abuse and little care? It was a Loake "Shoemakers" ("Shoemaker" is the second from top the line). I've since bought a few pairs of Loake "1880" (top of the line). Only the top two in their range, 1880 and Shoemakers, are made in Britain. The rest are made in India.

Church's Custom Grade is also nice but far more expensive.

And the rule for good shoes:

          1. Let the shoes completely dry out. If it feels even the slightest bit moist, use a different pair.
          2. Don't put those rubber outsoles on a leather sole (aka Topy). I've ruined a few great pairs because of that crap. It's like meth for shoes.
          3. Learn how to condition and buff shoes. Better than yoga, taichi and meditation rolled into one.
        • @tshow: Thanks. I drive a manual car and changing the gears over and over seems to ruin the back of the shoe over time. Anyone else experience this?

        • @Alex10:
          Mine digs into the carpet.

    • Hi Powershopz, thanks for the info. What brands do you recommend for the high end stuff? Is it the brand that matters or the specific type/model?

      • +1

Loakes as said previously are great.

I also like the German made Lloyds.

  • Garbage bags to line the 56 litre bin. Aldi ones are are little too weak. I've had a few that tear when trying transfer them to the wheely bin.

Going back to the Coles heavy duty garbage bags.

    • +2

      I use shopping bags :)

Home phone line. It is all mobile now.

Mobile from an MVNO. (No lock in plans on Telstra)

Internet from a cheap ADSL provider. (No lock in plans on Bigpond)

Free to air TV + Stan is way better than Foxtel.

  • Ink toner, popular food brands (go to Aldi instead, when I can), eyewear (I just order online now, while quality is significantly less it fits my budget much more)

  • Razors, dollar shave club :)

    • Get a razor pit shaver sharpener, haven't changed razors in like a year!

  • Always aspire to own those German saloon car. Own one now, after half a year decided it is not worth the penny. The only people that will see you in those machine are only your family and your valet driver, being an ozbargainer I hate overpriced valet and always Park my self so completely no point of using those luxury saloon. Will retire it in 3 years and buy normal saloon car

    • lol what saloon model do you have? The Maybach?

      • I wish I had that kind of money lol. It's smaller brother is as much money I am willing to spend

  • +3

Mobile phones - used to chase after the next big thing but not any more after using a few budget to mid range phones… Why would I need a SD820 when a couple of A53 s is already more than enough for what I do…

    • It depends on your usage. If it's to call, text and check a few social media apps or browse the net for news, it's fine. It's when you want to play the latest games, have a few apps running in the background and speed is when you need a bit more power.

      • My current phone cost $185. I don't know what latest phone games are, I can't really see the point in hardcore mobile gaming. My phone runs boom beach, clash, and a few others just fine though. It ran goat simulator for pretty well for the 10 minutes that I was entertained by it. My old tablet (which was much worse than my current phone) could run GTAIII pretty well.

Best of all, I don't have to worry about my phone. No ugly cases or screen protectors etc. I've only had one phone actually stop working, all the rest have been relegated to a drawer in fully functional state.

    • Totally, 95% of those paying for "flagships" have absolutely no need for them. Selfies, social media, calls, texts and emails all done very well by phones a fraction of the price.

  • +6

    Aldi toilet paper !
    It's the sheet

    • +1 for underrated comment.

    • The triple layer extra long is my choice. Lasts much longer than normal stuff

  • frozen food

    • +1

A lot of frozen food is actually fairly uneconomical to buy. E.g a bag of frozen mixed vegetables from Woolies has as much as 60% carrot.

Carrot is the cheapest vege you can buy from any supermarket ($1 for a kilogram) so it figures that they put the cheapest stuff in a large quantity into the mix, so you really end up paying quite a lot more than you think, just for the convenience of having veges pre-cut and frozen in a bag.

      • You may be onto something. I'm seeing less and less broccoli in my frozen mixed veggies.

      • They used to cube the brocolli and cauliflour stalks in those packs. The funny bit being the brocolli stalk has most the vitamins.

        • The 'head' portion is sold as another product, brocolli florets

        • @scrimshaw: yes they do, I was trying to say they used what would otherwise have been waste, making it cheaper than carrots. :)

  • +1

Razor blades. The Woolworths Select 'Alpha' blades are $1.50 each, compareable Gillette are like $5.60 for one razor blade. Very little difference in quality.

    • I've been using the same razor blade for about a year. Just sharpening it each time.

Personally use a leather strap but others have recommended a razor pit shaver sharpener.

  • +3

    Earphones for outdoor usage.

I personally think the price to performance ratio on earphones are not that great compared to headphones for indoor (i.e. Open back full sized headphones). So I've decided to give myself a rule of not spending more than $50 for earphones that I use outside, especially since I don't tend to have a moment where I focus on the music completely while being out. While I may expand this budget (there are few earphones that really made me tempted), I don't think I'd spend as much on earphones for outdoor compared to the indoor headphone (especially since indoor headphone I feel would last me longer).

    • Well articulated analysis of earphones vs. full size headphones.

  • Homebrand & Select Woolworths

  • Cars. I don't cheap out on tyres and brakes however.

  • +1

HDMI Cables, hard to spot any difference between premium ones and cheaper ones.

    • It is hard to find any difference. But it does depend on the cable. I purchased a $10 HDMI cable from Kmart to use for the PS4 to test, I couldn't get a signal. It may have been how strong the connector holds to the ports. I don't understand the expensive HDMI cables, but the Kmart cables would work on everything but PS4.

    • I'd say it is impossible for short runs of cable, ie under 10m.

For 30m runs, you start noticing degradation in the form of noise (both audio and visual).

Having said that, the JB, HN, GG brands like Belkin and Monster are very pricey. You can get proper Oxygen Free Copper from bluejeanscables for the same or less.

    dating sites, apps are cheaper.

  • MP3 players.

  • Bottled water. Mt. Franklin, Evian etc. are the same as the cheap Coles or Woolies ones. 70c for a 1.5L Coles water and $3 for a 1.5L Mt. Franklin water. I think all bottled water are overpriced but $3? They probably come from the same place anyway.

    • Coles bottled water has a bit of a weird taste
