AskOzb: What's something you used to buy high quality of, until you tried lower quality and decided it wasn't worth it?

Credit to Scrimshaw for "AskOzb". This is the reversed question of the recently popular one here and on Reddit.

  • What's something you used to buy high quality of, until tried lower quality and decided the difference wasn't worth it?

And/Or

  • What's something you used to squander on, until you decided it wasn't worth it?

    • i think the expensive ones taste weird. cheap ones taste more like real water

  • Mobile Phone!!! Used to have Nokia, Apple, now stick with xiaomi oneplus etc…

  • Razors. Aldi branded is no worse than Gilette

    • Better yet, I stopped shaving. Just use an electric razor once a week.

  • Sometimes i think its hard to tell with expensive items if its good quality or just someone buying a cheap item and selling it for more. like massage cushions - reject shop $15 then you have sales people selling them for $400 and they don't feel any different.

  • Health insurance. Medicare for me now

Oats - Coles brand at ~$1.5/kg everyday is just as good as Uncle Tobys or Lowans which can sell for $4-6/kg.

  • Pets. I used to buy brand new kittens from the pet store in the mall but now I get my cats a from the shelter for cheap or even free !!

Underwear: I can get 2 Target trunks for 4bucks, whereas 1 Bonds trunk will cost me $15.
No girl will see my jocks until it's too late :)
Cheap socks vary in quality. Some are better than others.

Belts: can't justify spending over 40 bucks plus on a leather belt.

Generic vacumm bags, bedsheets, quilt covers,

$2 trunks are better value than $10+ trunks for sure. Op shops for belts, keep an eye out for them before you need them.

  • When I was younger I used to buy higher end PC or equipment. Now I just buy something midrange. Quality wise it seems to last fine but the cost is significantly cheaper.

  • Washing machines.

You can get a decent Front Loader now for $500-600.

Years ago bought an Asko for $1600 as thought it was worth spending extra for "German quality". It was absolute rubbish. It lasted 7 years and for the last two years of it's life, wouldn't take enough water, wouldn't heat, got stuck on wash section, etc. Got told it would need a whole new control board/computer for $$$.

Bought a 7.5kg Samsung and couldn't be happier - $500 including 3 year extended warranty - ie guaranteed for 5 years.

Even if it only lasts 5 years I'm still ahead.

Washes better, quieter, had no issues in 3 years so far.

    • Yep, I think i have the same model as you and it is still going strong. I don't like Samsung TV's or Phones but I recommend their washing machines

        Provided it isn't a toploader

  • First thing came to my mind…Baskin Robbins Peanut Butter Choc to Coles Peanut Butter Ice cream….although I still go to BR time to time..

  • Oat Bran. The WOW brand is much better value when compares with any other bran-d. Its only PORRIDGE!

  • Great thread.

  • clothes. i used to buy expensive brand name clothes, eg: t-shirts that were $70 +, but then i tried a few k-mart ones for $10 and realised they were the same, and that you cant really tell if a t-shirt with a picture on it cost someone $10 or $100 thesedays.

  • Dry Fruits - The select brand stuff is not worth the money it is. Only organic dry fruits for me - worth every penny.

  • Since I've discovered OzBargain ?, everything basically, it's not so much about the quality but buying it cheaper. My new motto is twice as much at half the price.

  • Anyone compiled a useful list from here? OP?

Mobile phone plans. Mobile phones. Tshirts. No name food. Generic medicine. The list goes on. Most products cost more because of marketing, not often because they ARE better but because they are perceived to be better and there is some status in using more expensive product.
