American Express Platinum Edge - No Annual Fee for 1st Year, Complimentary Return Flight, 5000 Points

1820

One of OzBargain's favourite credit cards is free again for the first year ($195 afterwards).

  • Free return domestic flight each year of membership (including the first free year) to selected destinations
  • 5000 bonus points if you spend $550 in the first two months
  • Earns 3 points at major supermarkets
  • Earns 2 points at petrol stations
  • Earns 1 point everywhere else except
  • 0.5 points at utilities, insurance (except those issued by American Express), telecommunication providers and government bodies in Australia
  • 0% on balance transfers for 12 months (1% fee applies)
  • $50,000 minimum income

Some tips:

  • Woolworths and Coles sell a lot of different gift cards.
  • 2 point / $1 earning seems to be restricted not to just petrol stations. (Seems to apply at all 7-Elevens and Dan Murphy's, for example.) Edit: Dan Murphy's 3 points / $1
  • Free flight only has to be booked within the year of membership (not actually flown within the year) and can be redeemed for anyone (not just the cardholder). If you book around the time your annual fee is due, you may be able to book free flights from two years within days of each other.

Note: The Priceine deal is still on until 31 March 2016. This would seem to be a better deal (13,500 points) - however it does require a $200 spend at Priceline which is a bit more restrictive.

Referral bonus seems to have changed: now 10,000 bonus points + 0% balance transfer for 12 months + no fee 1st year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals

What interest free period does this have?

    • Had a read as I was interested too, it's 55 days.

  • Haven't owned a Credit Card in my life and looking to get this as my first one. What's the benefit of this card apart from free return flight. Can I get discount in supermarkets like Woolies / Coles and other fashion stores for example by accruing points? And will I be charged more for using Amex Credit Card when compared to using a Master Card Debit Card. Please let me know. Thanks!

    • I would spend about 10k at Woolies/Coles. That would net me 30000 points, which is more than enough to cover the $195 Annual Fee, then the Flight is bonus, and all the AmEx deals for extra credit. This is going to work out nicely.

      • 10k spend at Woolies/ Coles in a year? May be a very big family, mate!

        • +2

that's less than $200 per week, which is not outrageous for a family of 4-5. Especially if they buy all meat etc. there.

        • And TP, cleaning supplies etc.

  • Just applied for (and got approved, wheww!) my first ever AMEX card, should come in handy for the free flight and for the AMEX statement credits that get posted here from time-to-time.
    Thanks OP!

    • How did you know you got approved for the card? Did you receive an email? I haven't received any communication yet - I applied today noon.

      • Hi virhlpool, at the very last step I got a page saying congratulations you have been approved! Received a SMS today as well saying that I've been approved.
What did the last step for you say? Was it something like "we can't give you an answer at the moment, we will in 2-3 business days" or something similar?

        • I don't remember what the last page exactly said but probably just thank you. I then received a call to get my ids verified and he mentioned that my application has been approved.

        • @virhlpool:Awesome, great to hear. Hope you make the most of this card!

        • @virhlpool: I got the email and SMS - but no where it says about my credit limit… did you receive the credit limit?

        • @jason29:

I received a confirmation call from Amex as they needed some additional info, so I got my credit limit confirmed verbally. Anyway, while filling up the form, I had opted for a quite lower credit limit myself (instead of the default max limit), so I already know my credit limit.

        • @virhlpool: I did not receive a call,, just the email and SMS - so I assume I have to wait to get info about my credit limit

      • When I applied I was approved straight after the application and notified me via the website. Getting the email took a day or two. Hope this helps!

  • Does this have Price Protection or something similar? Can't find the Card conditions.

  • how does this compare to like the Westpac Black Amex? I am gonna get one of these for the points regardless but I was wondering which card to use after the 200 dollar priceline giftcard.

Does anyone try to apply with the income less than 50k? I am very tempted to apply but my income is less than 50k.

    • +2

I'd recommend against it. Because every application affects your credit score, an application that gets declined is all pain and no gain. You're probably better off applying for a different AmEx card and then potentially working your way up - I think if you called them in the future, they may upgrade you to this card even if your income weren't 50k+.

Rather than get a supplemental card, can my husband and I both apply for this card so we benefit from two free flights??

    • +2

Who are your asking permission from here?
No you can not, I forbid you.

The only thing stopping you is amex and you not meeting/passing their minimum requirements.

My partner and I always double up on the CC offers. We get one each, often we apply a few weeks apart to buy us some time on the minimum spend that alot of the cards require.

      • Thanks very much. This is what we have done

For the record, I have this card and love it but as it was my second amex card when I applied, I did not get the bonus points. I did get the free flight though.

I applied through a friends referral and I don't get the first year free according to the T&C. I get 15k points though.

    • I'm kind of thinking that those conditions are just older ones from the existing t&Cs. I will wait and see, but on there main page they had no special conditions that you had to apply through a special method.

I would probably complain if fee is charged.

    • I'm thinking of doing this too but I'm worried about the fee.

How does it compare with Amex cards provided by banks (Westpac, CBA, ANZ, etc.)?

  • I've received email confirmation of approval. Anyone know how long I need to wait before booking my free flight? Do I need to spend a certain amount first?

  • Just curious. For the minimum income, what if you earn a few Ks less than the stated amount. Eg. $47k for $50 , or $72 for $75k
    High chance of automatic decline?

    • I think there's a 10% "buffer"

    • better to call them about this then risk a negative credit hit.

  • Is there any minimum spend that one must maintain on this card?

  • I have the Amex Low Rate Credit Card (no annual fee), will they let you 'convert' to this type of card saving the whole extra credit check on your credit file and stuffing around? Or would I need to cancel my existing card then re-apply again?

  • Guys, quite keen on getting this card mainly because I fly domestically once a year. Can someone please clarify if the annual free flight redemption is based on membership year or calendar year. If I apply for this card today (07/04) and was approved today, does that mean I have up to 07/04/2017 to apply for my free flight? Or do I only have up to 31/12/2016 to apply for my annual free flight?

    • Membership year.

  • The referral codes have now changed so that they definitely don't have the annual fees.

  • Pretty keen to get this card but already having Amex velocity no annual fees card.can anyone confirm having received the bonus point / free first year membership while holding another Amex card

    • Yes i ended up getting the annual fee waived and bonus points even though i have the qantas discovery card

  • Just wondering if i take this card then would i be able to book complimentary flights under my husband's name instead? As i myself get the flights from work anyway…

  • What if I get approved, get the points and use the flight, then cancel the card before the annual fee is charged??

  • I currently make $45,000 a year. What are the chances of me being accepted? If it's a definite no, I think I may just go for the referral AMEX Velocity Escape card with no annual fee until I get my new job. Any objections or advice?

  • Does anyone else get this message when they try to create the referal link?

"We're sorry, but the Account you entered is not eligible for this referral program."

I got the card through the Priceline promotion, so maybe this doesn't qualify?

  • Is this 1 x point per flight as well? That's lame, which card has high earn on flights?

  • Remember they also give you a two week grace period so that when the card comes up for renewal, you can book two years worth of tickets (2 tickets) at once. I have just done this. For those who are thinking about cancelling the card, I would urge you to keep it until after the shop small promotion in November as many of us have made lots of money back on that one.
I am eligible for the affiliate card but prefer this one because of the 10 points per dollar at priceline. Their prices are expensive, true but I can get some prescriptions there and the 10 points is very handy.

    • I am just curious. Is the Priceline AMEX Platinum Edge the same as the "standard" AMEX Platinum Edge? Or does your card have perhaps the word "Priceline" printed on it?
