  • How much is it normally?

    • RRP $299. Cheapest it's been is $100 USD, but that deal looks unlikely to come around again.

      • Not bad….

Is it only if you buy from 'selected' stores ?

        • Doesn't say on the website, I just noticed it when browsing at Camera House.

  • For anyone interested, GH4 is the most popular among YouTuber's, records 4K.

    • All the new Panasonic cameras record 4k now, even entry level models. G7, GX8 and GX80 have 4k recording. Its the standard now and isnt exclusive to high end models anymore.

      • Not quite right. In the above included cameras DMC-GF7 doesn't have 4K video.

        • Was going to say I meant new models but I looked up the new GF8 and it looks like theyve skipped 4k for the lowest model.

G7 has less noise than GH4 for low light video recording, do you know that? ;-)

  • +1

The G7 is currently $670-ish, which makes this a completely stellar deal.

  • How would you rank the above models by performance?

    • +2

GH4 is the flagship, has all the bells and whistles and designed for top quality video and stills but is probably due for a replacement soon.
GX8 is the newest model with the latest tech but not all the bells and whistles for video which is only in GH4. Has a newer 20mp sensor and the first Panasonic body with IBIS. Great stills, good video.
G7 is a more budget friendly version of the GX8, and is great value. Very, very good performance for stills and video.
GF7 has been superseded but is a nifty little camera and the cheapest of the lot (can be had for $500 at Teds, including the 12-32 kit and the 25mm in this offer). Shoots only 1080p video, though.
GM5 is a the smallest m43 camera in the panasonic line, and probably works best with less bulky lenses such as the 20mm 1.7 or the 12-32mm kit zoom.

I believe G7, GF7 and GM5 all share the same sensor so performance will be similar for stills. GX8 has the highest megapixel count if you are into pixel peeping.

Bear in mind that their two latest models, the GF8 and GX80/85 aren't included in the offer. The GX80/85 has the distinction of the first m43 camera to offer IBIS for 4k video.

      • Thank you very much for the comparison. Appreciate!

  • I was looking at a G7 for video. It does 4k at 30p and 1080 at 60p. It uses the 'Micro Four Thirds' mount for its lenses which I believe are reasonably affordable. All in all looks to be a good camera for under $1k. I ended up buying a Handycam though.

  • I got it back in January via the redemption promotion. I had to wait 6 weeks for it to arrive, but at least that way the stock was guaranteed. With this promotion it's only while stocks last in store, and I don't think there will be much. It is a pretty sharp lens and the build quality feels good, but the autofocus is quite loud so if you're shooting video you will need an external mic

  • It's a good lens. Great freebie

IMHO Panasonic images > Olympus in bright light or with a tripod

Olympus has amazing in body stabilisation though - good for handheld video and low light without tripod

    • How does Pana lens with stabilization work on Olympus body then? Twice stabilization will cause trouble, no??

      • My understanding is that this lens (f1.7) does not have stabilisation and that is only present in the f1.4 summilux

Full disclosure I don't have an Olympus- I have only played with them in store when choosing my current m43 camera (pana gm1).

I don't think having both in body or in lens stabilisation would degrade your final image. However I do know that you can turn OFF in body stabilisation on your camera.

      • Panasonic lens stabilisation does not function on olympus bodies.

        • I'm pretty sure it does

        • @shiznit:

          So it does. My mistake.

        • @shiznit:

If it is a IBIS olympus, it will disable the panasonic lens IS by default. you can choose to use the IS from the lens and disable the IBIS. you cannot have both

  • Sorry if this is a dumb question but which stores does this apply to? Any retailer that sells these models or are there panasonic exclusive stores around the country that I wasnt aware of?

  • How do the lower cost models Panasonic Micro 4/3 ( GF7/GM5) stack up against other brands? I appreciate there are tons of factors here.

I was looking at Olympus and Sony a6000 but held back on the a recent Olympus deal as i wanted something with a bit better video. No Sony a6000 deals at the mo.

main use is better pics of the kids rather then using phone and some video and odd landscape when we go away.

    • +1

Continuous autofocus isn't so good with these Panasonics, so if your kids move around a lot keep that in mind.

      YouTube is your friend :)
Forget the reviews, just watch the footage

My GM1 takes wonderfully crispy video on a tripod. There is notable shake shooting handheld though since I didn't pony up for lenses with in lens stabilisation. If that's your jam an Olympus might be better.

The other thing you want to think about is audio, whether you'll want an external mic and does the camera have a plug for it.

Also there is a REALLY cool video of a modified canon EOS M rig for 400 USD. The really cool thing is he makes a handheld rig for it! It looks very stable and video friendly

I shoot video with 20 to 25mm lenses so it's wide enough that auto focus isn't an issue

      • thanks for the feedback guys! i've been hung up on getting a camera too long!
will review the lower end models

  • So when put on a gh4 or g7 for example this is really a 50mm lens then eh?

    • Equivalent fov to a 50mm lens on full frame.

      It's still 25mm though

      • -1

What are you talking about? The g7 isn't full frame and it gives a 50mm fov with this lens?

          Yes, m43 has a 2x crop factor.
