Globird Energy - Electricity VIC 50% off Rate for 6 Months via Shop A Docket

41
SHOPPER

Trying to find a cheap electricity company in Melbourne and came across this deal.

Their rates are already pretty low so with 50% off standard rates for 6 months, looks very attractive!

E.g. single rate charges with Ausnet
Daily charge - standard 132c ie. 66c per kWh with discount
Peak usage first 11.18 - standard 27.8 I.e. 13.9 per kWh with discount
Peak usage balance - 31.8c I.e. 15.9c per kWh with discount

What do their fees mean ????

    Network ServicesGlobird Standard Charges
    Re-energising 35.00 + GST
    De-energising 45.00 + GST
    Re-energising Same Day 150.00 + GST
    Meter Reconfiguration 70.00 + GST
Special Meter Read 35.00 + GST

and why aren't they quoting the GST inclusive price ???

    • I have no idea…

      • +4

        I don't trust them…

they don't even put a '$' sign in front of the amounts…

        very amateurish…

        • -1

          https://lumoenergy.com.au/help-centre/fee-schedule-vic

Seems the re-energise /energise fees are across other retailers too

        • @cato1:

They include GST though in their pricing (as per the law)

and also display the '$' sign…

        • @jv: just a guess but they may have to disconnect your power so DE-energise the line maybe do a inspection on the meter and then re-energise the line to re attach you to the power grid? sounds like a pain that would be the meter config maybe its a smart meter thing…

    • -1

JV, you pointed out right thing then why you have negative vote.

    • Can't even comply with Gst law. How can we trust them to do the right thing? Epic fail.

  • +2

The 50% discount is only off usage, not the daily supply charge (which is possibly the highest i've ever seen here in Vic) …

  • $$$

  • Maybe I'll just give powershop a go then if this is a dud deal!

  • +8

Powershop (Online Saver plan 34% - the max I can get)

    Dedicated Circuit (c/kWh) 9.90
    Off peak period (c/kWh) 9.67
    Peak period (c/kWh) 18.25
    Daily charge (c/day) 90.75

Includes 34% discount. GST Exclusive (for comparison)

Globird (50% off for 6 months)

    Dedicated Circuit (c/kWh) 7.8
    Off peak period (c/kWh) 7.75
    Peak period (c/kWh) 14.75
    Daily charge (c/day) 110.00

So if we compare for a month, my usage is split 32.8% dedicated, 34.5% off-peak and 32.7% peak. Let's assume a 30 day month. I probably use on average 15 kWh per day so x 30 would be 450.

    • Powershop

      30 x $.9075 = $27.23 (Daily Charge)

      • (450*.328)= 147.6 kWhs x .099 = $14.61 (Dedicated)
      • (450*.348)= 156.6 kWhs x .0967 = $15.14 (Off-Peak)
      • (450*.327)= 147.2 kWhs x .1825 = $26.85 (Peak)

    $83.83 for 1 month
    $502.98 for 6 months

    • Globird

      30 x $1.10 = $33 (Daily Charge)

      • (450*.328)= 147.6 kWhs x .078 = $11.51 (Dedicated)
      • (450*.348)= 156.6 kWhs x .0775 = $12.13 (Off-Peak)
      • (450*.327)= 147.2 kWhs x .1475 = $21.71 (Peak)

    $78.35 for 1 month
    $470.1 for 6 months

So you would save a little bit but keep in mind Powershop have weekly (4 in March, 3 in Feb) specials which buys you about a day of power cheaply so I reckon it's probably the same at 50%. After the 6 months, you would probably be better off with Powershop.

Hopefully, I've done all of the math right (probably not). Also these are Citipower rates (Vic Metro).

EDIT: Also for Powershop, $75 credit via referral & $15 off per AMEX card.

    • Thanks for the breakdown Neil, will give it some thought. I have looked over 3-4 of the biggest players in my area and the $$ always work out within about 5% of eachother. Any i guess this can ebb and flow with price rises.

Can you tell me how the 'weekly specials' work and how to take advantage of them?

      • Sure.

With Powershop you can pick different packages to buy (e.g. 100 units of the Online Saver). They use a unit as their electricity currency which is computed based on the % usage I mentioned above. The Online saver is 34% off so this is what I choose for the most part.

        Currently there are:

        • Online Saver 19.81 c/unit (34% off)
        • Green Online Saver 25.81 c/unit (100% Greenpower)
        • Green Saver 30.61 c/unit (Same as above, default Green plan to catch out suckers)
        • Standard Power 30.01 c/unit (No idea why you would use this)
        • Standard Saver 24.61 c/unit (default saver plan to catch out suckers)
        • May Future Pack 18.81 c/unit (34.5%,Only to be used in May)
        • May Green Future Pack 24.81 c/unit (Green, Only to be used in May)
        • June Future Pack 18.77 c/unit (35%, Only to be used in June)
        • June Green Future Pack 24.76 c/unit (Green, only to be used in June)

Any future packs you buy but not use will be refunded. E.G. You buy 100 and only use 80, they'll refund you the remaining. So potentially the May & June future packs will save you more money than your Online Saver.

Now back to the weekly specials. So keep in mind I use an average of 17 units per day. The last 3 I had were

        • 1/4: 20 units of Unfoolable Special @ 18.91c
        • 25/3: 15 units of Choc Special @ 19.09c
        • 19/3: 20 units of Earth Hour Special @ 18.48c

So these equal perhaps around 1 day of usage. They only pop up on the app so you need to have that installed.

Also keep in mind that the rates move depending on the season/% usage, my last few online saver purchases:

        • 19/3: 385 units of Online Saver @ 20.00c
        • 19/1: 537 units of Online Saver @ 20.53c
        • 18/12: 296 units of Online Saver @ 20.61c
        • 18/11: 159 units of Online Saver @ 20.46c
        • 21/10: 200 units of Online Saver @ 19.61c

etc. So possibly the higher prices were because I was using more peak power for the A/C.

The system looks complicated but works out well.

use GLOSAVE to get $80 once off credit and cheaper rate compare to shopper in my case as i also stumble to this shopping docket and do the comparison

Thanks! This promo code helped get me over the line with switching to GloBird.

Have just signed up with them as they are now the cheapest in my area considering ALL promos/discouts/offers.

The SHOPPER promo made the offer not as attractive because the daily charge reverted to the undiscounted rate.

Although there are some amateurish elements to the Globird website, I'm not sure I see why there's so much negativity overall. Except for Powershop (which IMHO is a pain in the bum to get the best value out of), Globird comes up cheapest for me for my electricity usage in my supply area before applying any promotional discounts there may be.

(And that annoying "re/de-energising" terminology is common across the industry and impenetrable to most people the first time they encounter it!)

  • Is this offer for 6 months or 12 months? The coupon says 6, but when I get the contract it says the discount will be in place for at leat 12 months: http://imgur.com/KndaFj9
