Fake Oregano in Australia

Turns out the cheapskate brands of Oregano I've bought in the past sometimes have as low as 10% oregano (with olive and sumac leaves used as filler).

  • Did it still taste good?

Another commonly used filler is cellulose aka wood. ATM there is a spat of some kind in the USA over the public being outraged because they've been eating mostly wood while thinking they were eating (and tasting!) Parmesan cheese.

MasterFoods, Woolworths Select, Coles, McCormick and Herbies Spices were the only brands containing 100 per cent oregano leaves.

Meh, I daresay that's the only brands most people pick up at the shops

    • haha I'm just imagining all the boutique hipster brands with fillers that make claims like organic

I'd guess a lot of OzBargainers in particular would pick up Hoyts' red-lidded 60g containers. It's way better "value" (well, not anymore) than the smaller alternatives (http://shop.coles.com.au/online/SearchDisplay?pageView=image…). And of course Stonemill from Aldi, because Aldi.

      • I always purchase Hoyts because they're Australian…

Thanks for the heads-up, I was wondering why some of these herbs (brands mentioned in the article - looking at you Hoyts) had negligible flavour.

Blame the big supermarkets for giving this kind of crap the shelf space in the first place

    • You're implying shops should quality control the seemingly billion products that they put on the shelves?

If you don't ever want shit products manufacture them yourself or bitch to the people that do for better quality products. Supermarkets are the middle men so there's zero point bitching to them.

  • Always use a company called Sunrise Botanicals for all our herbs & spices - have been happy with them for many years now. The products are also organic & so much cheaper than buying from supermarkets. You can find them on line & no I am not affiliated with them - just a happy customer.

I (profanity) KNEW SOMETHING WAS AWRY!!!!!. I got a herb garden in an old bathtub with loads or oragano and and the dried bought stuff tasted like mulched leaf clippings, rather than oragano leaf clippings if that makes sense. The bought stuff has the quality of dry garden waste.

Yep, same here. The last jar of Hoyts that I bought became the last ever, because the "oregano" tasted like lawn clippings, and their "Italian Herbs" were no better. It's not like I'm a herb quality tester, so if I can tell it's lousy oregano, there's something very wrong with it.

time for a class action lawsuit

  • i suspect a lot more herbs & spices, other than oregano, than are adulterated. ultimately it is the manufacturer's responsibility to ensure that what is in the bottle matches what is printed on the label.

i imagine supplements would also be a whole new can of worms as well

  • I buy gigantic bags of spices from chinatown, they are so cheap, and when I open the bag the smell permeates the house. Great Value!

    • Where in Chinatown do you get them?

      • at the grocery store on the cnr of ultimo rd and thomas st - everything there is cheap and yummy,

Grow your own where you can. Even a small pot serves you well. If you cant eat all, dry them and use as needed.

Best idea is to sell real oregano as weed to unsuspecting highschool kids, x100 profit 100% legal.

  • +1

Wow and they charge out the wazoo for it.
I get mine from the market, it's way cheaper and it's real.

      Hehehehe

Sage commented on an Oregano deal :P

      Conflict of interest?

      • thats gold!!!!

  • Just Grow your own in pots , along with a range of herbs. You not only get 100% oregano, or other herbs, but the flavour is so much better. If you got heaps, cut it, dry it and put into your own jars.

  • I thought someone was substituting marijuana for my oregano!

  • SOME OF THESE COMPANIES ADVERTISE ON RADIO AM BAND VICTORIA 11% OREGANO BY A WELL KNOWN SO CALLED AUSTRALIAN COMPANY STARTING WITH H WILL THEY WITHDRAW THEM FROM THE AIRWAYS. AS THIS IS A FRAUD I BET NOT

    • +2

Wow… step away from the keyboard and have a good think about things! You're getting angry over oregano!

      • And they have every right!

As a committed, full-time smoker for nearly 30 years, I know my tastebuds aren't what they used to be.

I DEMAND FULL-STRENGTH EL-SMOKO GRADE OREGANO FROM HOYTS. YES I'LL NAME THEM WHY WON'T ALPHABET FACE?

        • I blame the mid-level dealers, substituting oregano leaf & tip for the good fat oregano buds we've come to expect!

  • HOW ABOUT A CLASS ACTION AGAINST THOSE COMPANIES THIS IS JUST FRAUD AGAINST THE AUSTRALIAN PUBLIC.
YET THEY HAVE THE HIDE TO GO ON RADIO ECT AND CLAIM THAT THEY ARE AN AUSTRALIAN COMPANY
WHAT A NERVE THEY HAVE.DON'T BUY THEIR PRODUCTS AND SEE WHERE THE PROFIT LINE GOES D O W N .

  • No- the company is Austral Herbs but branded under the name of Sunrise Botanicals.
The other company I use for the items not available with S.B. Is The Herbal Connection. Don't knock them without trying them.
