$20 Telechoice LIVE Plan Upgrade - MMS+4G (for Grandfathered Users - Worth Trying for New Users)

170

The current public Telechoice LIVE plans are rubbish compared to the Grandfathered Kogan Plan that many of us are on.
But Telechoice have just sent out a message promoting 4G coming soon and a link to new "non-public" LIVE plans that offer similar, or arguably better terms than our Kogan plans and without a contract extension requirement.
Although these are targeted at current Grandfathered customers they'd be well worth trying to jump on if you're on one of the "public" LIVE plans or not currently with Telechoice!

The $20 Plan includes
$500 calls to other networks including International Calls/SMS/MMS
1Gb Data
"Unlimited" local SMS & MMS
"Unlimited" calls Telechoice to Telechoice

Benefits - maintain current contract status (ie out of contract for most of us), "Unlimited" local MMS, international MMS included in the "Cap", Excess data charged at $10/1Gb (rather than the extortionate Grandfathered rate of 25c/Mb, ie $10/40Mb), and 4G access when Telstra turn on 4G Telstra Wholesale
Negatives - call rate increases from 97c/min to 99c/min and unlikely to qualify for future Telstra AFL/NRL Live Pass deals (LIVE plan customers reportedly missed out on this year's deal anyway)

They're offering $15, $20, $28, $38 and $48 no contract extension Plans all of which are better than their current Public ($19, $28, $38 and $48) offerings and most of which are arguably better than the Grandfathered Kogan Plans (exception possibly the Kogan $25 and $28, depending on how you value the inclusions)

Unlimited as per mobile phone companies' definition - ie there are limits, but we wont tell you what they are

  • Got this text as I am an existing customer. I have a iphone 5C. Not sure if 4G compatible??

    • +2

      Pretty sure it is.

  • This is a Telstra reseller yeah? I need better call coverage, considering the switch…

    • Yes, Telstra.

      • The 6GB unlimited plan for $38 - is that pretty decent value?

        • This one may be better https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/238586.

$40, Telstra full network, 7 GB data. But i suspect it does not include international call where as Telechoice $38 unlimited include 200 minutes of international calls.

    • Telstra Wholesale reseller..
Telstra Wholesale Network Coverage is only marginally better than Optus/Vodafone if it's better at all. YMMV according to location.

      • +2

Network Coverage is only marginally better than Optus/Vodafone

but much more susceptible to outages than Optus/Vodafone…

      • Don't know about marginally- whenever I'm no road trips, my Telstra friends always seem to be in reception. Where-I (with Optus) seldom do.

        • +1

Telstra's Full Network coverage is DOUBLE (in land area) that of Telstra Wholesale/Optus/Vodafone. So I'm not at all surprised that your Telstra (Full network) friends have coverage when you don't.
Telstra Wholesale coverage is specifically restricted to roughly align to the coverage of Optus/Voda.

        • @scubacoles: Thanks! Didn't know that. Won't be switching then, not worth it…

      • FWIW I moved to telechoice because Optus and Vodafone don't have sufficient coverage at my house to make a phone call.

Since then, I've never been in a situation where I didn't have reception, but other networks did. But I often have reception when others don't. For example, when I my mother was in hospital, I had to be the contact for all the relatives because neither Optus or Vodafone had reception in the hospital.

Before telechoice I was on an Optus reseller and rarely used anywhere near my data allowance because the connection was so poor I could never use it. Now, although I'm still on the old 850mhz 3G network, I get acceptable to fast speeds everywhere.

No matter what the coverage maps say, I won't trust Optus or Vodafone to provide a service that actually works. I hate Telstra the company, but I have to admit that their mobile network is still the best by far.

        • Then there's the other perspective from @millzy below..
The reality is that coverage is roughly the same, but not exactly the same.
Some areas will be better than, others will be worse than Optus/Voda.
But it'll always be worse than the Full Telstra network.

Recently upgraded from this to the $28 2.5gb plan.
They can be a little hard to deal with administratively (der, they are a telco) but the network performance is good and the billing is accurate.

    • Do you mean 1.5GB? That's what I see on their site.

      • +1

Sorry, seems like they had a 1gb bonus offer last month.

  • +1

If you don't make as many calls (100min vs 500min) but want more data (3GB* vs 1GB) have a look at Boost Mobile $20 Ultra.
    *1GB for the 30 days + 500MB every weekend

    • I wouldn't consider that I make all that many calls (easily less than 1 per day), even after deducting "on-net" calls to my wife, but I've done the analysis and I just get too close to the $100/month to be comfortable to switch.

  • I think ALDI also something 4G coming …

    • Apparently it's already active.

      • I saw something new on the new catalogue 13april one.

      • After a post in the forums about this I noticed today getting 4G on Telechoice sometimes today.
I will say I get good throughut on 3G, so it isn't as dramatic a difference, as, for example, Optus 3G (sloooowwww) vs 4G (fast).

  • But hurry, because these plans will no longer be available from 5 April 2016.

    • Weird.. Link only came through today.. The disclaimer only applies to the 12 month offers.
Maybe those offers were publicly available?

Maybe that offer has been extended for Grandfathered users?

  • Oh, and the paperwork I got for this mentioned it was a 24 month plan.. Haven't had time to contact them yet to figure out if it was a misprint or not.

  • I had to move away from Telechoice because of the garbage reception all around Brisbane, constant drop outs on 2 different phones (OnePlus One & S5)
I'd get super pissed when voice & data wouldn't work in most shopping centers (Gotta check those Ozbargain deals when you're at the shops)

Ended up switching to Vaya/Optus and reception is amazing. Voice & Data kicks arse in shopping centers too.

So, IMO Telstra Wholesale is Garbage.

    • +1

It really is location dependant and I wouldn't rule out any without discussing with others.

At home, Optus mobile is absolutely terrible.. I'm on Telstra now and it's great, rest of the family are on Telechoice and it's just as good.

    • +1

Havn't really had any reception issues with my (Australian version) GS5, old GS2 and LG G2 around Brisbane and southern/western suburbs. Been with Telechoice for a couple of years now. Before that, was with TPG and the Optus 3G network was a bit patchy in the southern surburbs.

  • Here's a map of the Telstra Wholesale network - http://gcm.telstra.com.au/maps/mcm/wholesale.html

  • Does $10 per GB at 1GB increments/block mean that even if i use 1MB i get charged $10?

    • +3

      Yes…
but as highlighted, on grandfathered plans you'd get billed $10 after going over by only 40mb…

In comparison to that, an extra $10 for 1Gb is an absolute steal!

Just realised that unless you need the extra calls, it's arguably better to go with the $20 Plan and buy a 1Gb data pack each month for a total of 2Gb/month for $30, rather than the 1.5Gb/month of the $28 plan (plus extra $500 calls).

  • So if I move over to Live 20 from my existing $20 plan for which there is no end date as my contract is over, there will be no contract?

    • That's how I understand "your current plan end date won’t change" to mean.

  • Live 15 & 20 only for existing customers ?

  • The $20 Plan includes
$500 calls to other networks including International Calls/SMS/MMS
    1Gb Data
    "Unlimited" local SMS & MMS

Not as good as current Kogan offer ~$15 a month (unlimited talk/text + 1Gb) also with 4G "coming"

    • +1

Nevermind, forgot Kogan mobile came back on Vodafone…

  • Got my new sim today and activated it still seems no 4g in my area :( despite having it on the map using iPhone 6

    • 4G turned on in your phone settings?

People on Whirlpool reporting are that 4G is active for them.
But maybe the network is being turned on region by region.

      • maybe I'm from brisbane and according to the maps above I should have 4g available. I'll check again next time I'm in the city I guess since there will/should be 100% 4g.

  • For those on grandfathered plans, do they make you sign up to a new one with a 1 year (or is it 2 years?) plan?

Edit: Answered my own question, apparently those on old plans will have no lock in and no sim fee. Have signed up.

  • Correct, no contract. Just received and activated my new sim. Apparently 4G will be available at the end of April.

    • I've been getting 4G over the last week or so in Sydney and surrounds.

      • On the new telechoice live plan?

        • Correct.

        • @mskeggs:
Hmm ok.. Not sure why they tell me I have to wait. Maybe because I'm an existing customer changing to the new plan??

        • @Beast:
You need the new SIM card to access 4g, and it isn't "official" yet, still testing etc.
But once you install the new sim you should start seeing 4g.

        • @mskeggs:
I did get the new SIM card

  • Thanks, just ordered my new sim yesterday (spoke to staff on livechat and apparently it's still on). How long did it take for you to get it?

    • +1

      2 days

  • If I activate the SIM will it change my billing cycle? Ie. My billing cycle ends on 25th and if I activated today on the 20th, will I lose 5 days worth of credit and billing cycle starts today?

    • +1

Seems to change the billing date.
But they should only charge you Pro-rata for the part month on the old plan.
Just make sure you haven't chewed through your data allowance too much on the old plan! ie on the $20 1Gb plan, if you've used more than (1024mb/30days)34mb/day then you'll be charged for going over your quota.
Before you activate check out the ADLI plans released today! $20/month, $750 Calls, 1.5Gb same network coverage…
