Telstra $40 Mobile Plan, 7 GB (12 Months, SIM Only), Apple Music, AFL/NRL pass - eBay Promotion

710

For $40/month, you get $1000 of calls, unlimited text/MMS and 7 GB of data. It's for new customers, on the full Telstra network, and you commit to stay on for 12 months. It's post-paid.

It's similar to the Telstra BYO 'M' plan, only you pay $10 less and get 2 GB more data per month.

You should also get access to:

New advice for getting to this deal
If you still want the deal, you can try the deep link to the Telstra Online Shop. The first page indicates a $50 deal, but Brissie Mick reports that the $10 discount is applied a few steps later. donCobo and glowstix047 have confirmed they've been able to get the advertised deal this way.
UPDATE 14/3: Most people seem to be reporting an 'ineligibility' message by using the deep link.
Workarounds (pretty fiddly, but effective): The deep link appears to load ok using a Firefox browser on PC, or Safari browser on some iPhones. Alternatively, Richie312 reports getting the deal via the deep link but stopping his browser before the error message loads. YMMV.
A screenshot of the "Buy online now" page that leads to the deep link is here.

Instructions for getting to this deal (appears to have stopped working 13/3)
You cannot link directly to the deal – you need to start from eBay. I'd suggest this:
1. Go to the Mobile Phones category on eBay
2. Click on a page selling a new handset
3. Look for a link like this one
Then you're away :)

Note 1: You might need to disable any active ad blockers you've installed, as they might prevent you from seeing the ad link! H/T to His_Holiness
Note 2: Make sure you view a desktop version of eBay - the mobile or app versions aren't likely to show you the ad link. H/T to alfamale87

The spiel:

Get an exclusive plan for just $40/mth
You’re here because you’ve either bought a new phone on eBay, or you’re thinking about it.
Well don’t think too hard, because right now we’ll give you our exclusive plan with 7GB of data for just $40/mth – exclusive to eBay customers.

For new Telstra customers only. Offer applied during the online ordering process.

12 MONTH SIM ONLY PLAN
EXCLUSIVE
$50 per month 2.5 GB
$40 per month 7 GB
Min cost over 12 months is $480
Talk: $1000
SMS/MMS: Unlimited

This is better than this offer (it has 7 GB, rather than 5 GB), and better than this offer (which charges you extra if you call for customer service).

Pretty sure you can get the same deal straight though Telstra.

Edit:seems the deal is gone now

    • +1

Are you talking about this one, the "Mx" offer? That one made you do everything online, and would charge you extra if you needed to phone up at any time.

This offer is the same as the BYO "M" (ie no restrictions on phoning customer service), but cheaper and with more data.

    • If they do it in the store, it bills wrong, do it online it bills fine …… I think with these special offers they can't get the right codes in Siebel in store, but the web interface somehow gets it right.

Only thing I don'y like is the $1000 call credit at $1 per minute ….. most place now with these $40 deals and 7GB data are unlimited calls so you don'y need to monitor voice useage and potential bill shock.

  • Interesting - "Sorry, Unfortunately you are not currently eligible to receive this offer. Please visit our site to view the other great post-paid mobile offers we currently have available."

I wonder how they are determining this - OP did you receive a marketing mail?

  • +3

Meh will stick with freedom plus offer

    • I agree. With the bonus data , which looks like it's set to stay for the forseable future as they keep extending it, it's close enough in value data wise.
Being post paid, do you get the recharge credit with this deal? If not that puts it way back in terms of value in my eyes.

    • +4

Doesn't that only give you 3GB to use during the day for same price? I find that I use most my data when out during the day like commuting etc. At night, I've got wifi at home or if I'm out I'm not usually going out to sit and use a lot of data on my phone!

      • +1

With prepaid you get the added bonus of being any to spend that amount of recharge per month on purchases in the Google Play store. e.g. music, movies, apps, books, subscriptions etc.

So for a $40 recharge you get $40 worth of apps, music, movies etc.

Unless they offer that for postpaid I think prepaid is better value for money.

        • +1

The rolled over credit can also be used for international roaming. I have over $200 of prepaid credit built up by rolling it over, and will be using that next time I'm overseas. Far superior to post-paid for roaming, which offers no real cost control for roaming.

        • +1

          @kipps:

I did not know that. I was going to spend the recharge credit in the Play Store but now will save it up for my next holiday. Thanks!

    • +1

Yeah Freedom Plus was the best decision I made in terms of money and data, when switching away from the BYO plan.

  • -2

cant find link? why not just post the link OP?? unless its a targeted offer there for no deal

  • +2

You've got to turn adblocker off when you go to Ebay to see the Telstra link. Other than that it's very easy for everyone to reach the deal.

  • Does anyone know how long would you have to port out of Telstra for, to be considered a 'new' customer when porting back?
Edit: and to eligible for this deal?

    • +1

Grado- did you find out if porting out then back in worked?

      • +1

I didn't port out in the end, I spoke to their mobile saves section and negotiated a $10 discount when I mentioned going to the Optus $40/7GB plan. Happy enough with 5GB a month.

  • i cant find it

    • +1

The link is below the buy it now postage option.
If it doesnt popup, disable your ad block. Looks like this

      http://postimg.org/image/5azvme35l/

    • Found it! But when I click on the Buy online now link the discount doesnt show up…

  • Does this link work for anyone (without having to click the ad on eBay > Buy Online Now)?
    https://onlineshop.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans/buy/go…

    • It says 50 bux per month not 40.

    • Yes, but it says $50/month ($600 over 12 months). It's listed at the bottom of my post as a 'deep link' to the online store, but I haven't drawn attention to it as it doesn't give useful details of the offer.

      • Thanks.

Strange - I'm still getting $50/month even after clicking on the ad > Buy Online Now (after clearing browser data).

        • That's right, the main page (not the one you linked to) says:

Offer applied during the online ordering process.

so I imagine there's something a bit further along the chain that applies the discount.

        • +2

          @giles:
Yes - during the first few steps an additional "$10 off / month for being new to Telstra" kicks in.

        • +2

          @Brissie Mick:
Can confirm this seems to still work as at 13/03/2016 @ 14:00. Have signed up with the stated particulars ($40 and 7GB data total, etc).

  • +1

Would jump if it had about 3 more gig.

Currently paying $40 for 8GB with Optus.

    • Currently paying $40 for 8GB with Optus.

Sweet, how did you swing that? Postpaid or prepaid?

      • +1

        Postpaid.

It was their old $50 deal, but I get $10 off with the broadband discount.

        • +1

Are you on a fixed term (eg 12-month contract)? Have you asked about switching to the current $50 Optus SIM only month-to-month deal – 10 GB?

          http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobilephones/SimBYO

        • @giles:

Out of contract and I have asked 3 times - rejected all times. Asked once in store and twice with online chat.

Threatened to leave (which I will as soon as a better deal comes out).

        • @giles: The $40 for 7GB looks pretty tempting; down to $30 when bundled

        • +1

          @rorymeister:

Can you not just port out and back in again to get the deal?

        • +1

          @cheesecactus:

I can and I probably should have!

      • I got 10G for $40 at optus but had to sign up for 12 months ….. and it's unlimited calls, not this $1000 calls for $1 per minute …. at $1 per minute that is real bill shock if you exceed the limit.

    • -3

Why do you need so much data?

      • +1

Flexibility. Sometimes I need to tether for work. I stream a lot of music, too.

        • +1

Sure it's not for anything else?

      • they do data share sims for $5 once off at optus ….. so my sons dual sim phone has one of my data share sims in it for data. Also have one in an iPad so I don't have to tether on the train.
Telstra data share is $5 per month ($60 per year!).

  • +1

If your trying to find this on a mobile device, request desktop site or view as desktop version.

    • Good call. Have made a note in the post

  • i love how telstra is directly reacting to virgin's recent deal.

  • Can anyone find it? I can't find it on eBay and Telstra website is $50 for 5GB per month.

    • +1

Still working for me via eBay. Lemme know what's tripping you up.

Did you use the link in the instructions in the main post (also noting the special considerations if you're using a mobile device or have an ad blocker)?

      • Ok I will try again by turning the ad blocker off. However I'm currently a Telstra customer but my contract had expired. Will it work for me?

      • Ok I found it and went through the registration process but on the last page for confirmation, it says $50 a month with 2.5GB data only.

      • Just tried registering as a new customer and it works. This sucks, now I gotta find a way to port my number to another carrier then port it back to be able to get this deal as a new customer.

    • +1

MX Offer: To be eligible to take up the Mx offer you will need to sign up to electronic billing, sign up to direct debit and activate MyAccount, within 30 days of activation and self-service via the Telstra self-care channels. Failure to comply with any of these conditions may result in removal of the $10/mth discount and bonus 2GB.

This restriction doesn't apply to the eBay promotion. The offer you've linked to means you can't phone up or visit a store for customer service - and if you do, you might be charged $10 and have 2 GB data docked

  • +1

So this should give me access to the AFL live pass as per this thread right https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/236861 ???

    • Nice one, Mal68. Have added to the main post

  • Last time this deal was posted I rang Telstra as I couldn't access it. I asked to be connected to outbound Sales, managed to get the deal as a BYO plan, 24mths, $40/mth, 7gb data with the $1000 calls + a $100 welcome bonus as I came across from Virgin. I organised this for hubby for work, so I was happy to sign up for 24 mths. Might be worth ringing if you can!

    • +1

In 24 months this won't be a great deal

  • Bit the bullet and signed up, FYI if you work for a large corporation 13/18 numbers wont work with the application, just put in an 0x xxxx xxxx number

  • Looks like $40 for 7GB is becoming standard now:

    https://www.amaysim.com.au/unlimited-plan-changes

This is still a good deal though if you want the Apple Music and NRL pass but Amaysim doesn't have a lock in contract and unlimited calls so it has its advantages.

    • +1

Optus network vs Telstra network though.

Most people will chose Telstra since theyre the same price (unless of course the 12 month contract is an issue).

I straight up dont get optus or vodafone signal in my suburb which is 8km from the cbd for example. Uber drivers get very confused picking me up (they usually cant call me since their phones and gps lose signal)

      • they usually cant call me since their phones and gps lose signal

Do you live underground? Why would losing GPS have anything to do with provider?

        • They won't be losing GPS signals but the map parsing update comes through data, hence if data goes off, map refreshing stalls (soon to become a thing of the past by the way as Maps will soon be loaded in totality for a very wide area (like a whole city). Watch the space.

        • @simpsonporter: I believe you can download maps for offline use now.

        • @simmos:

Or just use here maps instead like windows phone users have been for 4 years :)

    • +1

yes $40 for 7GB is the new black, only fine print seems to be telstra still does it as $1000 voice calls at $1 per minute , others are unlimited calls.

They all also seems to be exceed your data it gets topped up at $10 per GB.

  • +1

I got a conundrum,I am on a virgin special plan - month to month $40 for 11 gigs; however the reception is shyte!!

    • +1

Mate, that's not a conundrum, it is pretty obvious you need to switch to Telstra in that case, hence your comment on this deal. Trust me, after switching you won't go back to Optus/Virgin. I would rather fast pings and pageloads for 7Gigs vs 11 gigs of shyte any day of the week. And month to month vs paying up front for a year, is not a big deal, it is not like you are gonna go without a plan for a few months, unless you go overseas for three+ months like I have done in the past.

      • Thanks Zan for the post; definitely food for thought.

  • +1
  • I don't have an AdBlock but cannot see any Testra offers under the Payment options. Can someone give me that "new handset page" which shows this offer? Or the deeper link, if possible? Thanks.

  • Any international calls?

    • Me too needs to knows.

  • I see a gap pop up between payments and returns however no telstra deal. Checked on Chrome + canary and IE. I do have telstra cable, perhaps the deal is auto blocked?

  • Cannot get this deal for the life of me… any other suggestions to find this advertisement would be greatly appreciated thanks!!

    • Yep, feels like I've tried everything, no ad at all.

    • It worked for me yesterday but I can no longer get the ad to appear today. Is the deal finished?

      • OzBargainers donCobo and Brissie Mick say they've had luck using the deep link. See the update in the main post.

  • Is the only reason to be on boost, is for no contract? Because this deal seems far better than boost $40 per month.

  • +2

Does anyone notice how just about all the Telcos are trying to wean people off the $30 deals ? (and move up to the $40 or above!)
as per garage sales comment further up,

yes $40 for 7GB is the new black

  • I've got an old ozbargained/Clickfrenzy deal with Optus that is 3GB data/Unl calls n SMS/MMS, 150 mins of free calls to 32 countries for $20/month for the first 6 months then $40. I use the 150 mins of oseas calls a lot so think I might pass on this one and stick with Optus, but the data and better coverage is tempting I might add!

  • Not finding the link.

  • i've just had a chat with the Telstra online folks, the $10 discount applies to BYO M plan regardless if you are from eBay or not. I was told just go into the store and ask for the deal, they will honor the discount.

    • Never mind, went to the shop and they cannot honour the deal but keep asking me to switch to mx

  • +1

$40 and 7gig would be great. I just wish I was a new customer rather than an old one !

  • I signed up just for the data, sick and tired of buying pre paids when on special and activating them and then moving on to the next sim. I must have about 30 telstra pre paid mobile accounts by now.

  • I've tried over 15 hours now and can never get through the last step.

    • If you're still keen, check the main post updated section. Brissie Mick and donCobo have managed to get the deal using the deep link at the online store.

      • Thanks mate. Tha's the link I used. I got it up to the enter cc details section and clicked "process the order", then always land at the failed page. Pretty sure I've got way more than $1 credit on the card and filled all my details correctly

  • +1

signed up using the deep link then just fine, Let's hope its smooth sailing from here onwards.

  • (profanity) Telstra. Why not just have this deal all the time so I don't have to dick around?

    • @Twocupteabag

I read that somewhere this is going to become a more permanent thing anyway.

      Don't stress :)

    • Have you tried using a different browser? It doesn't fit the spec of 'not dicking around', but if you still want the deal, the deep link appears to work using Firefox on a PC.

      • I ended up using chrome with hola set as Germany and it worked… Not 7 gig though - http://imgur.com/bb73sIy . This deal has expired for 7 gig - 5 gig only now.

  • Can anyone tell me why I got 8.1 GB instead of 7? Not that I am complaining, I just want to make sure I won't be receiving shock bills

    • Did you select extra SIMs when prompted in the online shop? The data+voice SIM will give you an extra 1 GB, and the data shared SIM will add 100 MB. If you picked one of each, that would make 7 GB + 1 GB + 100 MB = 8.1 GB

      • Bingo. Yes I did order a separate simcard albeit by mistake. Is there any way I can amend this before it costs me more than it should?

  • +1

Just signed up then, this deal is still live! Signed up with the permalink, just stopped loading the page before the "you are not available for this offer" box came up :) Very Happy Indeed!

  • Sim card delivered today and ported over (2 days of credit left on prepaid and ran out of data, immac timing), shows up as 7.5GB of data on the Telstra 24x7app so will be interesting to see..

    • Hmm, intriguing. Do you have any other Telstra postpaid mobile services in your name?

      • no other services, I'm unsure how legitimate it is as all my other correspondence advises 7gb.

    • +1

I ended up getting signed up on the BYO M plan even as an existing customer. I got 7GB + $1000 cap for $40 and not $50. They also said it was 7GB but in My Account it is showing up as 7.5GB! Winning!

      • Hmm I used to be a telstra post paid plan, then was on boost prepaid before moving back to this deal. Perhaps if you have an existing profile you may get extra data? No complaints in any case.
