Free 200GB of additional OneDrive storage for Telstra customers. I think it is lifetime (as long as you remain a Telstra customer), but it is up to Telstra to remove the deal after 2 years. Enjoy.

Thanks OP just signed up for it!

  • Cool thanks!

Confirmed. All I have is a data sim for my tablet with them, on a top up as I need plan.

Here is the note I received when I signed up.
"Telstra will be able to add bonus storage to your account. It will also be able to remove this storage (but no other storage), at any point in time."

    Cheers!

    • +23

Same reliability as a 2TB WD green drive - …'and its gone!'

      • I assume doesnt work with a prepaid plan or it is removed if you dont renew your plan?
Could be a relatively cheap way to get some storage on a $30 starter pack if so?

        • +3

          I currently own '0' Telstra services & I'm happy.
I've got a Telstra account from years ago when I had one of those old fixed line things.
I can still log in, & this 200Gb storage add-on activated fine for me.

        • @snoo: Classic Telstra :D

      • With Telstra at the controls, I'd say reliability is worse than WD.

      • +1

        I'm truly confused by this….

What's ever been wrong with that range of drives??

  • Thanks OP, just signed up

  • Thanks OP, was a breeze to sign up :)

  • +1

Easy! Sign in to Telstra account, sign in to Microsoft account, accept permissions. Done! Thanks chewkl.

  • Thanks OP - it worked even though I only have Foxtel with Telstra!

  • +1

Just be careful that if you've got more than one Microsoft account that you are signed into the one you want to apply it to (because it only works once per Telstra account).

    • +1

Yeah, I just applied it to my work account, haha. Oh well, not like I'll ever use it anyway.

  • Thanks OP.

  • What happens if you've loaded the 200GB with files and you port to another Telco? Would Telstra remove it, along with the files, without you knowing? Telstra has discretion according to the signup smallprint?

    • +3

If you lose your bonus storage, you just won't be able to add files until you're back under the limit. MS won't delete it. Though there may be limits on how long they'll hold onto the files.

      • +3

thanks bud. Million Dollar question, How long will MS hang onto the files? i might follow it up and report back.

right to answer my own question I found this off MS websites

        https://support.office.com/en-us/article/OneDrive-storage-pl…
What happens to my data if I cancel my subscription or my bonus storage expires and I’ve exceeded my 5 GB free storage limit?

If you cancel your subscription or if your free storage bonus expires, your data will continue to be accessible. You'll be able to view, share, and download files on your OneDrive, but you won't be able to upload files until you buy more storage or free up space.

        • +5

I see potential to abuse this.

If I signed up for 1 month of o365 w/1TB storage $9 … uploaded 1TB of static data (ie, photos) share it with another free account. Then cancel the subscription. I'd still be able to access the 1TB of data from the free account. Rinse & repeat with new accounts for more storage, just costs $9 when you want another 1TB of static storage.

        • @snoo:

Go the 1 TB each for 5 users option for $12… :P

  • Sweet. easy as.

    Thanks op

  • +1

Thanks OP!!!!!!! My One Drive enthusiast bonus just expired last week and I was trying to find ways to increase storage.

    Awesome stuff!

  • Awesome, thanks - that's me up to 523 gb lol

    • i just checked mine. Don't know how i got 1.2TB!!!

      • Office 365? You get 1TB with that.

  • Nice pickup, thanks.

  • +2

Signed up. Not sure why lol

    • +3

…free, is there any reason not to? :)

  • Thanks op

  • Thanks OP, although I have Office 365 and got 1TB already, but more is better.

  • Thanks OP, never had an onedrive account before, now I do!

  • +1

    Thanks OP!
My 100GB just expired and I needed more space, couldn't have been a better time!
Doesn't seem to have an expiry either so fingers crossed

  • Awesome, thanks OP!

Telstra on a roll today. Thanks OP.

  • I feel that Telstra going bust withing 2-3 years

    • +5

Seeing as Telstra owns most of the telecommunications in Australia, I highly doubt that.

  • Thanks, OP

  • +1

For anyone who completed the signup and noticed Telstra forgot to add the link to access OneDrive ;-) - here it is.

  • Thanks Op, that's awesome!

  • Very very nice

  • Thanks!

  • anyone sign up but account not showing the 200gb upgrade?

    thanks

    • Mine didn't straight away, but logging out and back in seemed to fix it

  • Thanks OP, added using a Telstra prepaid account I haven't used in years :-)

  • Thanks OP
    just signed up

  • +5

Nice, now up to 330gb from various deals. Yet I'm still using my Dropbox account with like 10gb on it lol.

    • +1

Yup same here I don't know why I always ending up using Dropbox over everything else.

      • -2

I think it's because OneDrive sucks

        • i never used OneDrive before, any reason why?
          Slow?

        • @itonez: I had a problem with it keeping files locked when it was syncing them. Doesn't happen with dropbox etc

    • Just so you know, when you upload something to drop box you lose all rights to the data. Drop box can then resell that data on without your knowledge.

      • Where does it say that? I legit want to know if that's true.

        • Drop box terms

By submitting your stuff to the Services, you grant us (and those we work with to provide the Services) worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable rights to use, copy, distribute, prepare derivative works (such as translations or format conversions) of, perform, or publicly display that stuff to the extent reasonably necessary for the Service.

They then rewrote their terms to mean the same thing but with more ambiguity to not scare users.

        • +1

@frazel: Damn. Who can you trust?

  • Damn, I signed in on a wrong OneDrive account when clicking the offer button.
I didn't realise it activate the offer on whatever microsoft account you signed in at that time without any prompts :(
    Very unhappy

    • Can a Mod please add this info to OP?

    • Contact Telstra. They can probably revoke it.

      • Mine went to the wrong account too, contacted telstra, got bounced around between 3 different reps.
THEN the last idiot says contact onedrive.
        They missed the whole point!

  • +1

    now i have 10.2TB…for now

  • +2

    I get:
"Hmmm… you don't seem to be eligible for this offer as you're not the registered account owner. Please log in as the registered account owner to redeem this offer"

Umm… what? Any other people getting this error?

    • Same problem here. Not sure what their issue is.

    • I got the same message and rang Telstra who advised me to register a new account followed by connecting my hotmail to the offer of 200g free. I just used a prepaid mobile number for the new registration.

      • Thanks for that info I have the same problem. But even trying to create a new account with a prepaid sim says it doesn't match their records even when I change things like name, birthday, email.

        Very strange.

The AFL pass offer worked fine on that account.

    • Yes, register a new account and it will be ok.

  • +1

Worked even with a dormant account with no active services

  • Got it. Thanks OP

  • Got. Much thanks.

  • +5

Ok best thing you can do with this is to use it as a free online backup.

Setup symbolic links with folders you never want to lose (Pictures, documents, etc) in the one drive directory.

Doing this is relatively easy open command prompt in admin mode and type the following command

    mklink /d <Link> <Target>
    For example mklink /d "C:\Users\kasp\One Drive" "C:\Users\kasp\Pictures"

Technet article to prove this won't wipe your system or do something nasty.
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/cc753194.aspx

Then bang an always updating cloud backup service for absolutely nothing, you can even do it with network drives and it works with anything Google Drive, Drop Box etc. However only do this with thing that are priceless you don't want to waste bandwidth copying shitty TV shows and what not.

    Anyways enjoy.

    • +2

      Yes,
      I do this with Dropbox.
You can also use a GUI tool such as this:
      https://sourceforge.net/projects/symlink-creator/

As a bonus, Dropbox keeps file history, so if you delete or save something wrong (or a file gets corrupted), then you can always download an old version of the file!

      • I thought One drive did as well or perhaps that is one drive for business.

Anyway versioning is the best defense against cryptolocker. (Well besides not opening the file or software restriction)

        • Only Onedrive for business has versioning. Pretty poor IMHO, Dropbox does versioning on the free accounts for 30 days, and 1 year for Dropbox Pro. Onedrive Personal should offer 1 week at a minimum…

    • Have you found it to be any slower browsing the files on your computer since it is just a link to onedrive?

      • No impact at all as it is still on your hard drive. Just you are making the computer think your Documents folder is inside the One Drive folder which is designed to be synced. This is what makes the process automatic rather than getting people to put files in one drive as people forget to do it so it's not really a backup.

The real impact is on your internet when it syncs to and fro but for offsite backup it's worth it.

        • Ok was thinking you had the actual files/folders in onedrive and the symbolic link on your pc.

What happens if the original file is broken due to your hard drive failing, what happens to the links in one drive?

        • @itsak:

Because of the auto sync, the corrupted files will be synced to OneDrive and will overwrite the previous version.

        • @itsak:

The same as what happens with any ordinary file. Just think of a symbolic link as a shortcut (All files are really shortcuts anyway) However everything see's it as the file is really there so One drive syncs the files to the cloud.

So if your hard drive dies providing it synced it will be on one drive. If the files is corrupted it will sync the corruption so no different from a regular file.

The symbolic links is more so it actually backups up rather than relying on people to remember to copy stuff to One drive (Also the duplicating of data)

        • @kasp: Still confused though, if the hard link is on your computer and the actual file is in one drive i can see how its a benefit because the actual file is backed up in onedrive. So if the link is on your PC then when you access that link it is actually referencing the real file in onedrive which you would think would be slower than accessing directly off your HDD as it needs to go over the internet?

        • +1

          @itsak:

Ok so you have directory C:\PICS

You create a symbolic link in C:\ONEDRIVE\PICS which target is C:\PICS

If you are browsing C:\ONEDRIVE\PICS it is the same as Browsing C:\PICS they are one and the same.

So Onedrive syncs it to the onedrive cloud as C:\ONEDRIVE\PICS is in the one drive directory which it is told to sync to the cloud. Meanwhile you can access Pics as per normal without having to remember to put things in the onedrive folder.

Also OneDrive just syncs files from your PC to One Drive you are not accessing the cloud version of One drive directly but your local copy which in turn syncs to One Drive.

        • @kasp: Ok so back to my second question, what happens if your hard drive fails, your links are broken meaning the backup is useless. Unless i'm understanding you wrong of course.

Edit: I presume it actually makes a copy rather than just a link

Edit 2: Did a bit of reading and it looks like it does make a copy so i guess it would keep the file in one drive if your hdd failed?

          Thanks for the info anyway

        • @itsak: Just tested it by creating a hard link to a folder on a removal USB drive, then i ejected the drive and could still access it via one drive so all good.

          Thanks again

        • @itsak:

No it doesn't make a copy, I have no idea what you have been reading, it's called a symbolic link.

One Drive syncs it into the cloud because to one drive there is no difference between a symbolic link and files stored in the directory.

Just think of it like whatever you have symbolically linked into the one drive directory will be synced by one drive to the cloud and leave it at that. If your hard drive breaks you will still have the cloud version.

  • new to looking at telstra prepaid…what's the cheapest ongoing costs for a telstra account? would like some data, as a backup to my main optus account, but don't need much (<1gb per month).

-tablet annual pass: $50 per year with 5GB data
-long life $30 recharge for 6 months: $60 per year, can use credit to buy 6x 1GB per month data packs

any other options? some way to use the starter packs to make it cheaper?

  • Quite sketchy what happens after two years though - i would be suss about it as after the two years you could be without it - the T&Cs are vague when it says "unless extended by Telstra" and at the same time are clear about how you will continue to have access, just not upload. But 200GB is 200GB and worth redeeming.

"Upon redemption, you can upload and access your documents/photos/videos for a maximum of two years. After two years, and unless extended by Telstra, you will still be able to access the documents/photos/videos (data charges apply) but will not be able to upload new ones."

  • +6

Great. Now I just need to go a Telstra Store, use the Telstra Air free Wi-Fi (200 down / 100mbps upstream) and fill up my onedrive.

    • +5

Now I've got 640GB. 640GB ought to be enough for anybody.

      • +4

Now you sound sort of like Bill Gates 35 years ago!

        • +2

Apparently a misquote for which no one was able to cite a reliable source

  • Great timing as my dropbox promo space is about to expire

    • But two very different products.

      • Arguably better because you can add something like NetDrive on top and use it like DropBox, best of both worlds.

  • Sweet. This is my last day as Telstra customer, let's see how long they keep my extra gigs :D
