Moto 360 1st Gen - Silver Stainless Steel Band $199 @ Officeworks (Clearance)

200

I don't know if this was posted before, and this is my first post here, so apologies if I did something wrong.

Officeworks are clearing off first gen Moto 360 stainless steel silver model for $199. Same price for the black leather varient of the Moto 360. This is the lowest price I have seen for the stainless steel Moto 360, I just picked up mine from Cannington Office Works at WA earlier today, there were only 2 left in the store.

I think this is the first generation of Moto 360.

  • Does anyone know how good this watch is, in terms of usefulness and usability? Been thinking about getting one, not sure how much I'd use it though.

Price is too high for first gen hardware, in my opinion. I picked up my sony smartwatch 3 for $120 used around September last year and I probably wouldn't pay more than that for a new moto 360 either, especially not now.

      • How do you manage to score that for $120?

        • He said "used" so secondhand off someone.

        $199 for a brand new Moto 360 isn't a terrible deal IMO.

The second generation only came out 6 months ago, and it has a better chipset, GPU and a higher screen resolution. It comes in 3 variants- small, large and womens. The large being the exact same size as the Gen 1 Moto 360 (other two are smaller) has a 400 mAh battery, an incremental upgrade to Gen 1's 320 mAh (remember 2nd gen has a ~1.5*higher PPI count). The 2nd Gen allows you to switch bands.

While Gen 2 has slightly better hardware, 1st gen is still very decent even by early 2016 standards. It should be able to perform most average smartwatch tasks you throw at it comfortably.

And remember if you got a second hand equal specs smartwatch for $120, $80 more for a first hand isn't bad at all. Esp. if you consider stainless steel bands it comes with, which is usually a $30 upgrade.

          and a sport model…

        • @irishjoe:

Yup, that too. But as far as I know, no Aussie retailers are selling the 2nd Gen Moto 360.

Also, the stainless steel band update when it first came out 1.5 years ago from default black leather was actually $80 US.

        • @Perth027: I would have liked the sport one if they made a small version. I ended up buying a small v2 from ebay.

    • I have one and I'm very happy with it - it looks great IMO, it's very easy to use, it has all the expected features, and the battery life is good enough for 2 days with appropriate settings.

If you can see the usefulness of a "proper" smartwatch (I don't count the Pebble) then this is a pretty cheap way of getting those features. There are plenty of other options, but they honestly don't do a lot more and they're way more expensive.

    • I have one. hit and miss with usefulness. Nothing that your phone can't do. It's more of a notification hub because you still need to use your phone to properly reply to text messages etc.
I get lazy w/ having to continuously charge it all the time and sometimes I forget to do so.
It's still a good digital watch for $199.

  • One of my friends is a developer in the android ware area of google and he was a fan of this watch (until newer models came out) so thats high praise as he had a draw full of watches and he wore this one.

    That flat tyre though…

    • +1

It's really not noticeable in daily use. It's like seeing the rims of your sunglasses - after a few minutes, you just don't see them anymore.

    • It's not very noticeable once you get used to it, I have been told by almost everyone who used a Moto 360.

The "flat tyre" bit actually houses all the important sensors, so it was always going to be either that or thicker side bezels. Personally, I am glad they went with the flat tyre instead of side bezels, it would have ruined the circular design otherwise. The second generation also has the bar at the bottom BTW.

  • i bought it from one of the ebay deals for about $170 if i rem and couldnt havent been more happy. though i dont really use it for its features but its quite a looker and get asked many times about it. i wouldnt pay anything more than 150 for it now.

    • I too got it at the same Ebay sale from Mobileciti.
$199 is still too much to be paying.

  • Best looking smartwatch in my opinion. I have had the stainless steel one for a year now. I wear a suit to work and this is the only smartwatch that looks decent enough in a business environment.

A lot of stores showing stock may have faulty returns, so best call first!

    • Doesn't Officeworks normally send off faulty items they get returned from customers for repair to Motorola?

My packaging had no flaws in it, so I doubt it was a refurbished model. but this really got me worried about my device. I will be testing it extensively for a few days now.

      • No faulty products are sent back to Motorola but not immediately, so the system will show stock but they're faulty items not for sale. If your packaging looked new, it would be new. Items that are returned because of change of mind are reduced in price accordingly.

  • I have one as my daily since a week after launch. I paid $300+ for it.

To be completely honest, they are a nice gadget; that is all.

    Android Wear (or this watch; I haven't been able to work out the actual cause) has some interesting faults/flaws;
Occasionally it'll get stuck in a processing loop and will drain the battery very quick if you don't notice it warming up your wrist.
Screen on drains the battery surprisingly quickly.
You cant reply to the notifications/messages from the watch, you will need to use your phone.
You cant stop an oem alarm from the watch.
You cant answer an incoming call from the watch, only silence or reject i.e. You still need swipe answer on the phone even if you swipe answer on the watch.
I have achieved a day of use for most of the time Ive owned it. (except for the occasional loop drain)

I use both Facer and Watchmaker and they are pretty cool.
IMO the flat tyre is a moot point, if it means that much to you, don't buy the watch. If you're not fussed about it, its not an issue. Personally I see the flat as a point of difference to the other brands.

Also, unless you really want one, I dont see much more value in a 'wear' based watch than about $80 MAX. There are far to many negs and also the tech and development is still too young.

My advice to ANYONE considering a wear device is, buy a 2nd hand one and try it. If you like it and can justify it to yourself, sell that one for what you paid and then get a new one.

The issues may be moto 360 issues. I have the LG G Watch (1st edition). You can stop alarms from the watch, never had the processing loop thing, I get about 1-2 days out of battery depending on usage (like most smart watches), can answer a call from the watch (can't hear the call though as it doesn't have a speaker on the watch)

The issue I do get with the watch is that the voice recognition if iffy. Sometimes it'll recognise my voice straight away, other times it just won't take any commands at all.

For watch faces, my favourite are Neon (one on the play store, not the one that comes with the watch) and minimal & elegant (highly customisable and good looking)

UPDATE: I am able to snooze/ cancel my alarms with my Moto 360 watch for my Nexus 6P, but obviously it could be because the 6P running stock Android and the clock application is made by Google, same company that developed the Android wear OS.

Most other Android OEMs tend to have their on skin on top of stock Android, and applications that they develop to replace Google's defaults.

Try installing Google clock application from the Play Store, and set that as your default clock application, might solve the issue.

I can also both accept and decline calls with my paired Nexus 6P. So I am guessing the issue is with your OEM's default apps, rather than Moto 360's compatibility.

Yes, the notification is pretty much the same with me too, you can take a quick glance at your notifications, some apps let you favourite/retweet posts (I think Twitter does), but unfortunately you cannot comment without taking out your phone.

  • I don't know if I just got a defective unit, I charged mine fully at 12 AM in the morning took it out of the dock, went to sleep, woke up at 5 AM- there was a system update. I went to install it, it said "insufficient battery", and I realised that the charge has been reduced to 47%, just sitting on standby. There was a green LED on the back that was (I think) always on during the standby time. I am sure ambient mode was off, is this normal?

Also, right now the watch is extremely tight around my wrist, and feels very uncomfortable, there are some spare portions of the band which came with the watch. Did anyone have to extend their stainless steel band? How hard of a process was that?

    • +1

Its not just you, if you get an update and your watch isnt 100% charged, it just says charge it.

Im not sure about the v1 straps sorry, my v2 uses standard straps.

    • The green light is used when taking a heart rate sample. Yes its normal and nothing to worry about, it just happened to be testing for a pulse when you noticed it.

I also occasionally have dock/charge issues. Ive found that when I charge the watch, button side up, it is less likely to have a problem.

Mine came with the leather band. I bought a Chinese metal band for it. I ended up having to buy a second one and using 4 links from it to make it fit properly.
Not hard at all though, only certain pins are removable, they are the ones closest to the clip.
If you are in doubt go to your local watch battery/Asian smoke shop, they can do it pretty cheaply.

Best result I've had from a day was 75% but the watch sat in my car as i forgot my phone that day. ~30% is normal for me ~10hrs (ambient off & minimum brightness. Around 15-20% with ambient on. Also changes depending on which watchface I'm using ATT)

FWIW the back of mine has not cracked, although it does have a few battle scars from daily use.
IMO the factory leather band appeared to apply some pressure/force to the back, which as my band is a non-genuine metal, is probably why it hasnt cracked (yet?).
